Behind the Screen with Bel Canto Boot Camp: Setting Orpheus and Eurydice

Come meet Bel Canto Boot Camp in person! In collaboration with Guild Hall of East Hampton, BCBC explores this fall’s Met: Live in HD repertoire.  Bel Canto Boot Camp aims to unite the rich traditions of the past with the exciting productions in today’s opera house.

Join BCBC co-founders, Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff, as we explore the varied settings of the ancient legend of Orpheus and Eurydice – from Monteverdi to Ricky Ian Gordon via Gluck and Offenbach.

This program is presented in tandem with The Met: Live in HD screening of Eurydice. A complimentary coffee from our eAT Coffee Bar will be available for all participants between the lecture and screening.

Join the conversation with BCBC co-founders, Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff, as we discuss the current trends in opera – musical, dramatic and visual. How do we define opera in 2021? How does the present shape our experience of the past? And our expectations of the future?

The Met: Live in HD – Eurydice

The ancient Greek myth of Orpheus, who attempts to harness the power of music to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the underworld, has inspired composers since opera’s earliest days. Brilliant American composer Matthew Aucoin now carries that tradition into the 21st century with a captivating new take on the story—a product of the Met’s commissioning program. With a libretto by Sarah Ruhl, adapted from her acclaimed 2003 play, the opera reimagines the familiar tale from Eurydice’s point of view. Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the December 4 transmission, leading Aucoin’s evocative music and an immersive new staging by Mary Zimmerman. Soprano Erin Morley sings the title role, opposite baritone Joshua Hopkins as Orpheus and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński as his otherworldly alter-ego. Bass-baritone Nathan Berg is Eurydice’s father and fellow resident of the underworld, with tenor Barry Banks as Hades himself. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

The Met: Live in HD – Fire Shut Up In My Bones

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard’s adaptation of Charles M. Blow’s moving memoir, which The New York Times praised after its 2019 world premiere at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as “bold and affecting” and “subtly powerful.” The first opera by a Black composer presented on the Met stage and featuring a libretto by filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, the opera tells a poignant and profound story about a young man’s journey to overcome a life of trauma and hardship. James Robinson and Camille A. Brown—two of the creators of the Met’s sensational recent production of Porgy and Bess—co-direct this new staging, which appears in cinemas on October 23. Baritone Will Liverman, one of opera’s most exciting young artists, stars as Charles, alongside sopranos Angel Blue as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta and Latonia Moore as Billie. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

The Met: Live in HD – Boris Godunov (Encore Screening)

Bass René Pape, the world’s reigning Boris, reprises his overwhelming portrayal of the tortured tsar caught between grasping ambition and crippling paranoia, kicking off the Live in HD season. Conductor Sebastian Weigle leads Mussorgsky’s masterwork, a pillar of the Russian repertoire, in its original 1869 version. Stephen Wadsworth’s affecting production poignantly captures the hope and suffering of the Russian people as well as the tsar himself. This cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

Behind the Screen with Bel Canto Boot Camp: The Singer’s Process; The Big Debut with Megan Esther Grey

Bel Canto Boot Camp (BCBC) presents interactive sessions in collaboration with Guild Hall of East Hampton, uniting singers from the MET Stage, the Guild Hall audience, and the golden voices of the past.  

Join BCBC co-founders, Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff, for a discussion with three emerging singers as they share their experiences of preparing, rehearsing, and performing on the MET Stage — and hear them sing! Steven Tharp, tenor and presenter of BCBC’s  Audiophile Society, then guides our ears by sharing his favorite recordings of these great masterworks in BCBC’s interactive Zoom format, connecting the contemporary experience to past performance. 

Mezzo-soprano and former MET Lindemann Young Artist Megan Esther Grey joins BCBC and Guild Hall to discuss her experience singing many performances of Kate Pinkerton on the MET stage and on the HD broadcast, all while covering (understudying) the influential role of Suzuki, Butterfly’s maid and confidante.

International soprano Janai Brugger joins Bel Canto Boot Camp and Guild Hall to relate her experience, as many singers do when getting their start on the biggest stages, of singing the role of Micaëla in Carmen with minimal stage rehearsal. Janai’s credits at the MET include performances of Liù in Turandot, Pamina in The Magic Flute, and Jemmy in William Tell, among others.

Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča stars as the iconic Gypsy in Richard’s Eyre’s acclaimed 2010 production. With dances created by star choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and conducted by maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin, this Carmen brings every aspect of Bizet’s thrilling tale to life, from its lighthearted beginning to its inevitably tragic climax.

Run Time: 3 hours including one 10 minute intermission

James Robinson’s vibrant production of America’s favorite opera was a smash hit of the Met’s 2019–20 season. Bass-baritone Eric Owens and soprano Angel Blue star in the title roles, headlining a phenomenal ensemble cast. David Robertson conducts this beloved score, which includes a number of melodies that have become classic American standards.
