This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Tags, the frantic word game. In this game, players will be challenged to find words for categories that begin with specific letters as quickly as possible. For example, in one round the categories may be Desserts, Corporations, Books, and Things That Annoy You, while the letters are A, W, T, and S. As quickly as you can, you need to find words that begin with the given letters and fit the given categories. Each player only has 15 seconds on their turn to get as many words as possible, so think fast! This game races around the table and keeps players on the edges of their seats from start to finish.

This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Mental Blocks.
Mental Blocks is cooperative puzzle solving game where players work together to build a common structure out of foam blocks. For every puzzle, each player receives a card depicting one perspective of the finished structure. Players must work together using their limited information to solve the puzzle before the timer runs out. After a couple rounds, we will try the “hidden traitor variant,” where a player who knows the puzzle’s solution is actively trying to sabotage the team without being found out. Mental Blocks is an incredibly simple concept that has everyone playing with blocks, stretching their minds, and working together.

This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Just One. Just One is a cooperative word guessing game. Each round, a word will be shown to every player but one – this player will be trying to guess the secret word from clues given by the other players. Each player secretly writes their clue on a piece of paper, and once all the clues have been written down, all duplicate clues are removed before being handed to the guesser. Clue-givers must try hard to give unique clues that won’t get cancelled out by teammates. This forces players to think dynamically and creatively even though the game itself is incredibly simple.

Mugimp. Flaxijen. Rilidun. Which is the toxic mushroom, the Scandanavian fish dish, and the term for a lazy person?
This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Krazy Wordz, the game about making up, well, crazy words. Each round, players will privately receive a card with a prompt like “Baby Food Brand” and a selection of random letters. Everyone uses their letters to make up a fake word that fits their own prompt. Then, the cards are shuffled and each player must guess whose crazy words match which prompt. Krazy Wordz is a super fun word game that rewards creativity over a big vocabulary, and will have the whole table laughing from the get go.

This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Barenpark. In this game, players compete to build the best bear park. Everyone starts with a gridded board which, over the course of the game, must be filled up with polyonimo (Tetris-shaped) bear enclosures. On your turn, you choose one of the available pieces, maybe a polar bear or kodiak enclosure, and fit it into your park. Depending on which spaces you cover up on your board, you will be eligible to purchase a new piece for next turn. Barenpark is a test of spatial reasoning, planning, and love of bears.

Downforce is a drag racing game where players not only compete to place first in the race, but also place bets on the results for extra “cash”. On your turn, you simply play one card from your hand that moves several racers forward on the track. Even though you are usually forced to advance your competitor’s vehicles, you get to decide how to move them. This means you can cause a backup of other players’ cars while yours sails through the crowd effortlessly. Be wary, however, as other players are trying to do this to you as well! Additionally, each racer has a special advantage – will you specialize in straight-aways, sharp turns, or weaving through traffic? Three times during the race, players will place bets on the final results. This means you don’t actually have to win the race, as long as you can bet on who will!
This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Azul, a beautiful tile-based game about building a mosaic wall. In Azul, players take turns strategically selecting colorful tiles from a common supply available to all players. At the end of each round, acquired tiles are slid over into each player’s mosaic wall and points are scored based on connecting tiles. Azul, 2018’s game of the year, is a great, easy game to learn and has beautiful, tactile pieces to play with.

This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Monikers, designed by Alex Hague and Justin Vickers. Monikers is a fantastic social party game based on a game you may have played before with pen and paper: Celebrity (or Fishbowl).
Players will be divided into two teams to compete for the most points. On a team’s turn, one player will act as the clue giver. This person has one minute to get their team to guess as many famous names drawn from a deck of cards as possible. In the first round, clue givers may say anything they like aside from the actual name of the person. After all the cards are drawn through, they are reshuffled for round two – this means all the cards from round one will be used again for rounds two and three. The second round is essentially charades, and in the third round the clue giver may only say a single word per card. If this seems impossible, just remember you have already seen all the answers!
This is a great, simple game that rewards creative thinking and memory.

This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Trapwords, from Czech Games Edition. Trapwords is a great new team word-guessing game with a twist. Each round, one player on each team will try to get teammates to guess a secret word by saying anything they want. However, the opposing team has created a list of words the cluegiver is not allowed to say – and the cluegiver has no idea what they are. This creates a hilarious dynamic where no one is sure what they are allowed to say, and descriptions of ordinary words become totally bizarre. I once got my team to guess “roof” by saying “the thing that gets burned when you eat pizza” because I was afraid words related to houses might be on my opponent’s list. This is a simple game to play but hilarious and tricky to win.

This month we are playing Welcome To, a new game designed by Benoit Turpin. In Welcome To, players compete to build the perfect neighborhood. Welcome To is a “Roll and Write” game, which essentially means it is played almost entirely with paper and pencil. Each player starts with an identical blank slate neighborhood that is filled out as the game progresses. Will you focus on pools, public parks, businesses, or new estate contracts? Hopefully you can fit in a bit of everything, but how you design your perfect neighborhood is up to you!
