STIRRING THE POT: Holiday Pie Primer with Carissa’s Bakery

Learn how to make a beautiful pie with Carissa’s Bakery. Join us for this special bonus Stirring the Pot as we get an exclusive look at the new Carissa’s in Sag Harbor with this timely holiday pie primer.

Florence Fabricant, New York Times Food & Wine Writer will be in conversation with co-founder/Pastry Chef & Baker Carissa Waechter and head baker Denis Bernard, while they simultaneously present a Thanksgiving pie-making demo from start to finish so everyone can learn how to make a holiday pie, including the extra fancy step of making meringue for the more adventurous home baker.

Guests will have the opportunity to sample the final product and be entered into a drawing to win a pie. Everyone will also go home with a special Thanksgiving-themed gift courtesy of Citarella Gourmet Market. You do not want to miss this very special holiday pie primer with Carissa’s Bakery.

Carissa’s began with something as “simple” as baking bread and has evolved into a locally-minded kitchen and community hub. Within their counter-service, all-day bakery they sell European-style breads, viennoiserie, and vibrant cakes inspired by the surrounding flora, all baked on-site in their bright and sunny, modernist space. Their dishes are based on the principles of wholesome ingredients that honor the season, in addition to fresh juices and coffee.

Carissa’s practice living life responsibly. That means minimizing waste and use of plastics, and––through thoughtful sourcing––supporting the small growers and producers near us who prioritize organic and sustainable farming, fair trade practices, and overall transparency. For them, this recipe yields a more delicious, and healthful, outcome every time. Visit carissasthebakery.com.

2020 James Beard Foundation Outstanding Restaurant Design Awards

Carissa Waechter graduated Dean’s List from the Art Institute of New York City and began her culinary career under world pastry champion Michel Willaume. Following a decade of pastry chef experience in top NYC restaurants, including esteemed 4-star chef Daniel Boulud, Carissa followed the food trail to Amagansett, NY where she developed close relationships with local farmers while operating the Amagansett Farmers Market with Eli Zabar.

She launched Carissa’s Breads in the spring of 2010 based upon locally grown and produced ingredients, and that same year she co-founded the Amagansett Food Institute, a nonprofit organization who’s mission is to support small-scale farmers and food producers on the east end of Long Island.

Carissa managed AFI’s South Fork Kitchens in Southampton, where she produced her breads and baked goods before partnering with Lori and Alexandre Chemla in 2016  to expand the business into retail and open their first flagship bakery in East Hampton while continuing to wholesale across Long Island and NYC.

After three busy years it was time to expand to a second retail location, and the business’ 221 Pantigo Road location opened in the Summer of 2019 as a 75 seat cafe, restaurant and bakery with a focus on locally-sourced produce from its long-standing partners on the East End. The newest location at 3 Bay Street in Sag Harbor opened in October 2022.

Swept Away: Love Letter to a Surrogate(s)

SWEPT AWAY: Love Letter to a Surrogate(s)
by Warren Neidich

Join us at Main Beach on September 10, 17, 24 from 7-10PM and October 30 from 6-9PM for a series of unmissable happenings!

September 10 presentations will include Elena Bajo, Lillian Ball, Megan Chaskey, Scott Chaskey, Philippe Cheng, Peter Dayton, Katrina del Mar with Chris Jones, Carol Edwards, Margaret Garrett, Sutton Lynch, Eileen O’Kane Kornreich, Bastienne Schmidt, Christina Sun, and Darius Yektai.

Bring your own chairs!

Swept Away: Love Letter to a Surrogate(s) will take place at the water’s edge in front of the Pavilion at Main Beach in East Hampton. Attendees can watch or be an active participant and enjoy the evening’s festivities.

Warren Neidich notes “Swept Away: Love Letter to a Surrogate is a community oriented artistic project that aims to create a transcontinental heartbeat across America. It is hoped that through its combined gestures and performances, a sense of solidarity, so desperately missing today, will emerge with which to confront the ecological catastrophe at our doorstep.”

The syncopated sound of the surf will provide the background acousmatic. This poetic project in some ways harkens back to the Happenings staged by Allan Kaprow in 1966 all through the South Fork: https://alastairgordonwalltowall.com/2018/02/07/gas-i-am-a-happener-1966-east-hampton/

Artist Warren Neidich who created the successful Drive by Art event in 2020. The project is co-curated and co-coordinated by Christina Strassfield, Museum Director/Chief Curator of Guild Hall, Anuradha Vikram, Los Angeles based independent curator, and Los Angeles based conceptual artist Renee Petropoulos, plus administrative coordination by Julie McKim. 65 artists living in on the East End and 65 west coast artists are participating in this community and family-based Art Happening. In the spring the reverse will occur; with East End artists writing love letters to LA artists to be executed at Will Rogers State Beach, Santa Monica in conjunction with the 18th Street Arts Center.

At Main Beach, artists will create ephemeral performative gestures of immateriality or time-based works on the beach. This could be making a sandcastle, singing a song, reciting poetry, dancing, make a sculpture that interacts with the tide, collecting shells, doing a light projection on Main Beach pavilion, picking up garbage on the beach, etc.  The works could be political and deal with global warming and its effects on the water level or could be apolitical and talk about the natural beauty of the real in opposition to the digital and virtual.

The importance of biodegradable, non-toxic materials will be essential as well as leaving the beach pristine after the work. Each artist has been linked up to a west coast artist who will email instructions – a love letter – for a work of art that the local artist will incorporate into their performative piece, acting as a surrogate.

The list of East End and West Coast artist pairings is as follows:

New York is Burning by Les Ballet Afrik presented with The Church and Works & Process at the Guggenheim

New York is Burning
Les Ballet Afrik
with Omari Wiles

Show and Tell Presentation at The Church, Sag Harbor

Commissioned before the pandemic, New York Is Burning was to honor the 30th anniversary of the of the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, which received critical acclaim for its depiction of New York’s LGBTQ Ballroom scene and of voguing as a powerful expression of personal pride in the face of racism, homophobia, and the stigma of the AIDS crisis. In uncanny resemblance and just as Paris Is Burning did for New York in the 1980s, New York Is Burning reflects the aspirations, desires, and yearnings of a diverse group of dancers in a city again beset by health, race, and financial crises. Led by choreographer and dancer Omari Wiles, the founding father of the House of Oricci and a legend within the Ballroom community, New York Is Burning centers on the artists for whom the dance company serves as a surrogate family including Kya Azeen, Eva Bust A’ Move, Algin Ford-Sterling, Alora Martinez, Shireen Rahimi, Milerka Rodriguez, Yuki Sukezane, and Yuhee Yang.

New York Is Burning is commissioned by Works & Process at the Guggenheim and at the peak of the pandemic received Works & Process bubble residencies at Catskill Mountain Foundation and Kaatsbaan Cultural Park. Works & Process bubble residencies were made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. New York Is Burning is also supported by at Works & Process LaunchPAD “Process and Destination” residency at The Church, Sag Harbor, in partnership with Guild Hall and Sag Harbor Cinema.

COVID-19 PROTOCOL: Attendees must be fully vaccinated and must show proof on arrival. Face masks are required.
