Out with the old, in with the new!
In the past couple decades, game designers have been creating fascinating, immersive games that make Monopoly seem like it was designed in 1905. Game night no longer means suffering through hours of rolling dice in Monopoly or Risk. Today’s games cultivate creativity, problem solving, social skills, and dexterity through clever game design. Join Guild Hall and Game Master Noah Salaway in embracing the tabletop revolution as we play some of the best modern games on the market the last Monday of each month. Ages 16 and up only.
This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Monikers, designed by Alex Hague and Justin Vickers. Monikers is a fantastic social party game based on a game you may have played before with pen and paper: Celebrity (or Fishbowl).
Players will be divided into two teams to compete for the most points. On a team’s turn, one player will act as the clue giver. This person has one minute to get their team to guess as many famous names drawn from a deck of cards as possible. In the first round, clue givers may say anything they like aside from the actual name of the person. After all the cards are drawn through, they are reshuffled for round two – this means all the cards from round one will be used again for rounds two and three. The second round is essentially charades, and in the third round the clue giver may only say a single word per card. If this seems impossible, just remember you have already seen all the answers!
This is a great, simple game that rewards creative thinking and memory.

This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Trapwords, from Czech Games Edition. Trapwords is a great new team word-guessing game with a twist. Each round, one player on each team will try to get teammates to guess a secret word by saying anything they want. However, the opposing team has created a list of words the cluegiver is not allowed to say – and the cluegiver has no idea what they are. This creates a hilarious dynamic where no one is sure what they are allowed to say, and descriptions of ordinary words become totally bizarre. I once got my team to guess “roof” by saying “the thing that gets burned when you eat pizza” because I was afraid words related to houses might be on my opponent’s list. This is a simple game to play but hilarious and tricky to win.

This month we are playing Welcome To, a new game designed by Benoit Turpin. In Welcome To, players compete to build the perfect neighborhood. Welcome To is a “Roll and Write” game, which essentially means it is played almost entirely with paper and pencil. Each player starts with an identical blank slate neighborhood that is filled out as the game progresses. Will you focus on pools, public parks, businesses, or new estate contracts? Hopefully you can fit in a bit of everything, but how you design your perfect neighborhood is up to you!
Zines & ‘Za is an art workshop for teens. They’ll work with local artist, Brianna Ashe, on creating their own Zines using a variety of mediums. There will be pizza served and raffle prizes to win. Teens are encouraged to bring magazines for collaging. The event is free and open to all teens!

This month at Game Night we will be playing Bohnanza, designed by Uwe Rosenberg. Bohnanza is a game about bean farming, and it is one of Noah’s favorite games of all time. In Bohnanza, players trade, plant, grow, harvest, and sell beans to make as much money as possible. The heart of this game is haggling and arguing with your friends over whose beans are more valuable and shouting things like, “Who’s got a green bean for my two wax beans?” This is one of the best negotiation and trading games out there, and shows that great games can be made about anything…even beans.

Roemer’s mural project Blue It! draws attention to the health of the intricate waterways surrounding the East End. This three-part project began with a public beach clean-up in partnership with The Surfrider Foundation, which took place at Main Beach in East Hampton on October 20 from 11am-1pm. Materials collected on the beach will be used to expose silhouette imagery onto recycled fabric in the rich blue cyanotype process. The printed fabric created at the beach will contribute to a larger collection of cyanotypes created by Roemer and used in a 30-foot mural in the Guild Hall Education Corridor. Altogether, these blue images will amass themselves like the sea, which upon closer examination, will reveal the human-created waste that pollutes it.

*Additional support and fabric donations from the East Hampton Ladies Village Improvement Society.
