Julian Schnabel is a leading figure among the artists who reinvigorated the practice of painting in the late 1970s, adopting unconventional materials and ways to use them to create monumental works. He remains one of the seminal and most prolific artists of the last four decades and has been a significant figure in contemporary art discourse since his first New York solo show at Mary Boone Gallery in 1979. His experimental and often revolutionary approach extends throughout his creative work in various mediums—including painting, sculpture, architecture, and award-winning feature films. Every aspect of his life is filtered through a painter’s lens, as Schnabel lives and works in carefully considered spaces, often en plein air, surrounded by objects dating from antiquity to the present, many created by artists and artist friends, both living and dead, and by the artist himself.

Julian Schnabel: Selected Works from Home presents a selection of the artist’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures from his personal collection—the works he has chosen to keep for himself and to live among. The works on view, made over the last 45 years, include an early wax painting, Procession (for Jean Vigo) from 1979; Salinas Cruz, a painting on velvet from 1984; paintings on printed materials and tarpaulins; and multiple plate paintings, which show the different possibilities of working in this manner and with this specific material over decades. Schnabel’s art evokes a deep yet elusive connection to humanity. The installation of his large-scale works within Guild Hall’s intimate galleries offers visitors an all-encompassing, contemplative experience—a rare opportunity to lose oneself in the artworks, their history, and their transformation —and to capture a sense of time suspended.

This exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader, director of visual arts, in close collaboration with the artist, and Patrick Hillman, executive assistant to Julian Schnabel.

Following the success of their 2022 summer pop-up in East Hampton, TASCHEN is thrilled to return to the Hamptons, partnering with the cultural heart of the East End – Guild Hall.

Coinciding with the opening of Guild Hall’s summer exhibition Julian Schnabel: Selected Works from Home, TASCHEN will transform a section of the historic museum into a fully operational pop-up shop.

The TASCHEN pop-up will feature several Julian Schnabel x TASCHEN projects, including an exclusive collection of hand-painted skateboards by the artist, available to US collectors for the first time. The pop-up will also showcase limited edition book projects with contemporaries such as Annie Leibovitz and David Hockney, alongside a curated selection of TASCHEN’s most celebrated art books, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, New York. Portrait of a City, and Peter Beard.

The TASCHEN Pop-Up at Guild Hall is open to the public Thursday to Sunday, 12–5 PM and before theater programs.

Guild Hall is pleased to host An Evening of Short Plays Directed by Bob Balaban on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28 at 7 PM. Renowned actor, writer, and director Bob Balaban returns to the theater to curate and direct his second presentation of short plays by America’s finest playwrights.

Some of the selections include “Inner Baby” featuring Edie Falco and “Rash” featuring Jim Bracchitta from Pounding Nails in the Floor with My Forehead by Eric Bogosian, “Seeking Wild” from Laughing Wild by the late Christopher Durang featuring Stephen Wallem, The Keepsake by Lynn Grossman featuring Richard Kind, “man – 40s” and “woman – 60s” featuring Blythe Danner from 10 X 10 Monologues by Neil LaBute, and Mr. Happiness by David Mamet.

The cast includes Jim Bracchitta, Blythe Danner, Edie Falco, Richard Kind, Stephen Wallem, and others to be announced.

Robert Glasper is the leader of a new sonic paradigm with a career that bridges musical and artistic genres. To date, he boasts 5 Grammy wins and 12 nominations across 11 categories, an Emmy Award for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary “13th” with Common and Karriem Riggins, and a Peabody Award for his Composition of “Mr. Soul!”. His work and accolades bridge all aspects of the music business, from live touring to film scoring, composing and producing.

Evolution is his hallmark. Glasper’s breakout crossover album Black Radio changed the face of the genre and set a new expectation for what popular music could be. The album won him the Grammy for best R&B album and established him as the musician of choice for some of the world’s most iconic artists; notably playing keys throughout Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, winning another Grammy for the elastic track “These Walls”. The ongoing Black Radio series has since become Glasper’s calling card, upholding a place at the heart of a trailblazing community: from long-time sonic brothers Mos Def and Bilal, to legends including Ledisi, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Jill
Scott, and Erykah Badu.

Glasper’s eternal pursuit to further his sound has been consistent in challenging and transforming his creative horizons across the board. Whether producing a remix album with Kaytranda or as a bandleader, Robert consistently defies the limits of the genre. This is evident in a portfolio that ranges from his acoustic jazz trio; which simultaneously defies and elevates the traditional idiom by uniting it effortlessly with electronics from visionary DJ Jahi Sundance, to August Greene; a collaboration with Common + Karriem Riggins, to R+R=Now; a supergroup at the crossroads of hip-hop and Jazz.

In the last year alone, Glasper has seen a staggering diversity of success. He released Black Radio III and Black Radio III Supreme Edition on Loma Vista Records; with features ranging from Jennifer Hudson, Killer Mike, and the late Mac Miller. On screen he created the original score for Run The World Season 2 and The Best Man television series. In July 2022 he was the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the first Blue Note Napa Valley Jazz Festival, which brought to the stage a plethora of iconic artists; from Chaka Khan to Maxwell and Glasper’s Dinner Party project featuring Snoop Dogg. October 2022 sees him back in New York for his now-legendary month-long residency at the Blue Note NYC, with the usual array of star-studded appearances from the likes of Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Questlove, Alex Isley and Miguel joining him both on and off stage.

With boundless innovation and elite technique as his signature it’s no surprise that Glasper has an avalanche of accolades, awards, and achievements to his name – most recently being asked to play at the 2020 March On Washington with Derrick Hodge and funk legend, Sir George Clinton. In August of 2020, Robert released ‘Better Than Imagined’ which won the Grammy for Best R&B song in 2021; the first taste of his Black Radio 3 album. Featuring H.E.R and Meshell Ndegeocello, the song advocates for Black love and the power, and responsibility, we have to improve our world; again demonstrating that, above all, Glasper is an artist at the heart of a moment – and a movement – to champion Black music, Black people, and the possibility of a better future. The hip-hop-head-nod ballad is a dedication to just that: the beauty and brilliance of a heritage that is as much Kendrick as it is Coltrane, and which seeks to empower and uplift with every offering. Glasper later went on to win the Grammy for Best R&B Album for Black Radio 3 in 2023

A daredevil couple risk it all to go where no one has gone before: the top of the world’s last great skyscraper. Angela and Vanya are Russia’s preeminent rooftoppers who defy the odds (and death) to scale the globe’s tallest buildings. As their acrobatic stunts go viral and rack up millions of online views, they form a dynamic duo and create a new artform that they call “skywalking.” Filmed over six years across six countries, SKYWALKERS: A LOVE STORY captures extreme climbing in harrowing detail and is directed and written by Emmy-winning filmmaker Jeff Zimbalist (MOMENTUM GENERATION), and co-directed by Maria Bukhonina. Local favorites Student Body returns for a night of high-energy musical performance intertwined with moments of introspection and reverence. The show will also pay homage to the artistry of film with a simultaneous screening of THE PASSING by Sirad Balducci, creating a multi-faceted experience that celebrates both the spirit of rock and the vibrancy of the community.

THE PASSING is a lyrical exploration of how souls traverse through time, experiencing one another and challenging the linearity of existence. Through the artful use of Super 8mm footage from the Feleppa family archives from Amagansett, NY in the 1960s and 1970s, the film crafts a visual and emotional tapestry that underscores how our memories keep our loved ones ever-present. It celebrates the ephemeral beauty of each moment and the timeless connection between past and present. Featured in the film are Tim Feleppa as a young boy, Sue Feleppa, Gian Carlo Feleppa, and Alex Feleppa.

Guild Hall introduces Academy Icons, a new program that spotlights Guild Hall Academy of the Arts members and their work. Inaugurating the series is Susan Lacy, an acclaimed director and producer best known for creating American Masters, the PBS biography series, which began in 1986, profiling artists and visionaries who have helped shape our country’s culture. Her subjects have included James Baldwin, Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, David Geffen, Lena Horne, Joni Mitchell, and hundreds more. American Masters garnered unprecedented awards over the years. Susan earned the series 71 Emmy nominations and 28 wins, including a remarkable ten for Outstanding Non-Fiction Series, in addition to 13 Peabody Awards, three Grammy Awards and a nomination, and an Academy Award and four nominations. Since moving to HBO in 2013, Susan has directed and produced Spielberg, Jane Fonda in Five Acts, Very Ralph, and executive produced The Janes, all for HBO Documentary Films. Among many other distinctions, Susan served as the Governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for eight years, is an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences member and a cherished member of Guild Hall’s Academy.

Yola is a six-time GRAMMY nominated artist, songwriter, and actor who has achieved critical acclaim, breakout success, and has been proclaimed as one of the most exciting and innovative artists in music today. NPR called her latest album, Stand For Myself (2021), the “best soul record of the past 20 years”, while Rolling Stone championed her as “one of contemporary pop’s greatest singers, who just so happens to also be one of its sharpest songwriters.”

The duo will be accompanied by Andy Hess on bass and Josh Dion on drums.
