Estimate Retail Value: $35,000

Robert Longo (American, b. 1953) is a New York-based artist, filmmaker, and musician known for his photo-realistic drawings and works on paper which examine the role of politics and power in our society. Deeply influenced by sculpture, his drawings—which are marked by chiseled lines—almost seem three-dimensional, as if they could pop off the page and enter physical space at any time. He received his BFA from Buffalo State College where he was closely associated with fellow student Cindy Sherman. Shortly after school, he moved to New York City and quickly joined the growing underground art scene in the late 1970s. Longo’s work has been exhibited at numerous major international institutions, and his performances and set designs have appeared around the world. He was the subject of retrospectives at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; and Museum Berardo, Lisbon, Portugal. Longo’s work has been included in recent group exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA PS1, and has received numerous reviews in publications such as The New York Times, Interview, Art in America, Forbes, and New York Magazine.

Robert Motherwell

Gauloises Bleues, 1968

Intaglio and collage on paper

25.5 x 17 inches

Courtesy of Marisa and Mark Borghi

Estimate Retail Value: $28,000

Provenance: the artist, B.H. Friedman, Daisy Friedman until 2015

American painter and printmaker Robert Motherwell (American, 1915- 1991) was a foundational figure of Abstract Expressionism, integrating aspects of action painting, color field painting, and European traditions of decorative abstraction into his own work. Motherwell was also one of the youngest artists associated with the New York School in the 1950s and ‘60s, a group that included Philip Guston, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. Like many of his colleagues of the Abstract Expressionist generation, Motherwell remained devoted to recognizable imagery, to the expressive potential of calligraphic marks and to subject matter of a literary and political nature. The style, and the artists associated with it, began to receive international attention in the 1940s, when Motherwell started regularly exhibiting his work in New York. In 1944, he had a solo exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim’s gallery Art of this Century, and, the same year, the Museum of Modern Art purchased one of his works. His work has been shown in major retrospective exhibitions at Barcelona’s Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Mexico City’s Museo Rufino Tamayo, Buffalo’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and New York’s Museum of Modern Art, among many others, and is in major collections worldwide.

Vik Muniz (Brazilian, b. 1961) is a contemporary photographer. He has had solo shows at MoMA, Museu de arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The International Center of Photography, Paco Imperial in Rio, and MACRO in Rome, among others. His solo exhibition in 2009 at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, had a record number of attendees only rivaled by Picasso. A full-scale, traveling retrospective of his work was organized by the Miami Art Museum in 2006. His work is in numerous public and private collections, including those of MoMA; The Art Institute of Chicago; Daros Latin America, Zurich; Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; The Tate Gallery, London; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

On The Road, An Artist Book of the Classic Novel by Jack Kerouac, 2009

Leather bound book with photographs

14.125 x 18.25 inches, 228 pages

Edition 78 of 350, 35 APs, 5 PPs

Courtesy of the artist

Estimate Retail Value: $10,000

Indisputably one of the most iconic American artists of the 20th century, Ed Ruscha (American, b. 1937) has built a formidable body of work by staking a claim on the deceptively simple intersection of text and image, superimposing elliptical phrases (or, often, single words) over West Coast landscapes to create paintings that can be read instantaneously yet evade easy understanding. Encompassing painting, drawing, and photography, Ruscha’s works hold a mirror up to the banality of urban life and gives order to the barrage of mass media-fed images and information that confronts us daily. His work has been featured in dozens of exhibitions around the world, including a retrospective at the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, a survey of his works-on-paper at the J. Paul Getty Museum, and a retrospective that traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Ed Ruscha’s personal affinity with Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel On the Road has been wonderfully resolved in this limited edition book. Ruscha has designed the book, illustrating Kerouac’s text with his own photographs. The text is printed in Letterpress on 220g Hahnemuhle paper and every one of the 55 photo-plates is blind embossed and tipped in by hand to create an exquisite and original edition of On the Road.

Oil On Canvas

Estimate Retail Value: $35,000

Kikuo Saito (Japanese, 1939–2016) was a color field painter, set designer, and theater director, who began his career as a studio assistant for some of the most preeminent painters of the 1970s and ‘80s, including Larry Poons, Kenneth Noland, and Helen Frankenthaler. Saito’s works are bright and calligraphic, often covered in gestural strokes of color, drips of paint, and stenciled capital letters. Before turning to painting, Saito was a resident at New York’s La MaMa Experimental Theater Club, and collaborated on set design with directors and choreographers like Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, and Jerome Robbins. Saito returned to the theater in 1996 with his silent production, Toy Garden, which costumed dancers as characters from Vittore Carpaccio’s painting Two Venetian Women on a Terrace (1490) in an attempt to reimagine the work’s missing half.

The portrait will be shot with a medium format camera, not digital. Winning bidder may bring a guest to the sitting. The ideal number of people for a portrait is one or two persons.

Andres Serrano (American, b. 1950) is an American photographer and artist who is most well-known for his controversial images and subject matter. A self-taught photographer, his photographs appear painterly, carefully composed, suffused with light, and saturated with color, their subjects framed with an eye towards such classical sculptural qualities as form, mass, and balance. Serrano has been exhibited internationally, and he is the recipient of numerous awards and grants from organizations such as the New York State Council on the Arts, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Cintas Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Lisa Yuskavage (American, b. 1962), the premier “bad girl painter” of the contemporary art world, is well known for her highly sexualized paintings of the female form. Her work has developed over the years into her own genre of the female nude: lavish, erotic, cartoonish, vulgar, angelic young women cast within fantastical landscapes or dramatically lit interiors. They dominate the realm of their artwork, narcissistically contemplating themselves and their bodies. Over the past decade, Yuskavage has been the subject of solo exhibitions at a number of prominent institutions worldwide, including the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. Yuskavage’s work is held in major museum collections, including The Art Institute of Chicago; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the MoMA, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Krasner Print

LEE KRASNER, Obsidian, 1962, Lithograph, 16 x 21 in (Framed 23 x 27 in)

An ambitious and important artist in New York City during Abstract Expressionism’s heyday, Lee Krasner’s own career often was compromised by her role as supportive wife to Jackson Pollock, arguably the most significant postwar American painter, as well as by the male-dominated art world. Lee Krasner was the sixth of seven children born on October 27, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. By the young age of 13, Krasner had already set her sights on becoming a professional artist, which was an unusual career choice for an immigrant and a woman. Krasner was a key transitional figure within abstraction, who connected early-twentieth-century art with the new ideas of postwar America. Inspired by artist Piet Mondrian’s “grid,” Krasner helped devise the “all-over” technique, which in turn influenced Pollock’s revolutionary “drip paintings.” Lee Krasner died on June 19, 1984 and her legacy is a testament to the strength and integrity of her character and her work. The complexity and vibrancy of the painting speaks for itself. At her request, the house where she and Pollock lived in East Hampton has been kept as it was when they lived there.  It is open to the public and is home to an extensive research library.

Motherwell Print

ROBERT MOTHERWELL, Madrid Suite, Number 10 (from Madrid Suite), 1965-1966, Lithograph, 17.5 x 22 in., Edition 65/100, Printed and Published by Hollander Workshop, Signed, Stamped

In 1940, a young painter named Robert Motherwell came to New York City and joined a group of artists — including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline — who set out to change the face of American painting. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1915, Motherwell first hoped to be a philosopher. He received a BA from Stanford University (1937) and went on to do post-graduate work in philosophy at Harvard. Motherwell briefly studied at Columbia University with the renowned art historian Meyer Schapiro, who encouraged him to pursue painting. His work can be found in such permanent collections as Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Tate Modern, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Willem de Kooning, April 24, 1904 – March 19, 1997, was a Dutch American abstract expressionist artist who was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.  His early artistic training included eight years at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and Techniques.   He was one of the thirty-eight artists chosen from a general invitation to New York City metropolitan artists to design and paint the 105 public murals at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. In 1938, probably under the influence of Arshile Gorky, de Kooning embarked on a series of male figures, while simultaneously embarking on a more purist series of lyrically colored abstractions. As his work progressed, the heightened colors and elegant lines of the abstractions began to creep into the more figurative works, and the coincidence of figures and abstractions continued well into the 1940s. In 1948, de Kooning had his first one-man show, which consisted of his black-and-white enamel compositions, at the Charles Egan Gallery in New York. He taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1948 and at the Yale School of Art in 1950/51. In September 2011 de Kooning’s work was honored with a large-scale retrospective exhibition: de Kooning: A Retrospective September 18, 2011 – January 9, 2012 at MoMA in New York City. The Willem de Kooning estate is represented by The Pace Gallery.

Born in Kittery, Maine in 1975, Joe Bradley received his B.F.A. in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. His work references Color Field painting and Minimalism, sometimes resembling human figures from assembled canvases.  Bradley has said his work is “intentionally shoddy” and “pathetic” thanks in part to his use of flimsy shop-bought canvases, but he selects his colors and surface textures with care. Bradley lives and works in New York City.

Montauk Dream, 2012

Oil on canvas

11 x 8 inches

Courtesy of the artist, 303 Gallery, New York, and Hauser and Wirth, New York

Estimated Retail Value: $45,000

Mary Heilmann lives and works in New York City.  Born in 1940 in San Francisco, California, she earned a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MA from the University of California, Berkeley. Imbued with recollections, stories spun from her imagination, and references to music, aesthetic influences, and dreams, her paintings are like meditations or icons. Her expert and sometimes surprising treatment of pain, alternately diaphanous and goopy, complements a keen sense of color that glories in the hues and light that emanate from her laptop, and finds inspiration in the saturated colors of TV cartoons such as “The Simpsons.” Her compositions are often hybrid spatial environments that juxtapose two- and three-dimensional renderings in a single frame, join several canvases into new works, or create diptychs of paintings and photographs in the form of prints, slideshows, and videos.  Mary Heilmann has received the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation Award in 2006, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. She has had major exhibitions at Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, New York, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, and the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California, among others. Her work has appeared in three Whitney Biennial exhibitions and is in many collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Orange County Museum of Art.

Brushed Camel, 1978 – 1990

Silk screen lithograph with air brush and hand painted oils

AP 6 of 20

22 3/4 x 22 1/2 inches

Courtesy of the Larry Rivers Foundation, New York

Estimated Retail Value: $2,500

Larry Rivers, August 17, 1923 – August 14, 2002, was an American artist, musician, filmmaker and actor. Rivers resided and maintained studios in New York City, Southampton, New York, and Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

About this particular edition: Rivers originally created the print series Brushed Camel in 1978. The image of the Camel cigarette pack was created using silkscreen, lithograph and some air brush work on beige paper. A sheet of acetate was then laid over the image with additional lithographic and air brush work added to it. Rivers sold some of these prints from the original 1978 series, but, at some point, he decided to separate the acetate from the paper and market them as two separate prints. This interrupted the original edition and the numbers are now inaccurate. In 1990, he decided to take the remainder of the Camels that were on the beige paper and hand paint them with oil paints to create brand new editions.  The hand painted Brushed Camels are each unique adding to their value. This is a truly distinct piece with a rich and interesting history.

Estimated Retail Value: $28,000

David Salle is an American painter who helped define postmodern sensibility by combining figuration with a varied pictorial language of multi-imagery.  Salle was born in Norman, Oklahoma, and earned a BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.  In 1976 he moved to New York City, where he found work in a publishing house that specialized in romance and pornography magazines and began to collect images from its archive. His earliest work involved the strategy of overlaying images, and this quickly became his signature style.  Salle’s paintings reflect a collage aesthetic, whereby he takes images out of their original context and re-contextualizes them into complex ensembles.  Salle is known for mixing modes of representation and appropriated ready-made motifs in a single canvas, suggesting but defying any legible narrative. Employing the postmodern technique of pastiche, where the close display of disparate images and styles tends to reduce everything to equivalent signs, Salle’s paintings function as metaphors for the dizzying onslaught of media culture.  Major exhibitions of his work have taken place at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Salle lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Sherman uses herself as a vehicle for commentary on a variety of issues of the modern world: the role and representation of women in society, the nature of the creation of art, the role of the artist and many more. It is through her ambiguous and eclectic photographs that Sherman has developed a signature style.  Sherman lives and works in New York City.

In 2002, in response to the lack of detail available with existing cameras, Clifford invented and patented the “R1” camera that has the ability to create some of the highest resolution large-scale landscapes available. He is represented by Sonnabend Gallery in New York. Ross’ recent Guild Hall exhibition was a survey of his large-scale photographs from the series Mountain and Hurricane. The sequence of images

of Colorado’s Mount Sopris taken over the course of a day and a half have a mesmerizing and majestic quality, and the ocean scenes are from the beaches on the East End, where he spends his summers.
