SUMMARY:ROSS BLECKNER: NEVER THE LESS
DESCRIPTION:Ross Bleckner emerged as a leading artist in New York during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s\, creating paintings that explore change\, loss\, memory\, and the human body. A central figure in the decade’s revival of painting\, he developed a practice that merges psychological\, social\, and political themes within a strong conceptual framework. In 1995\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York presented a mid-career retrospective of his work\, underscoring his importance in contemporary art. \nNEVER THE LESS will highlight a lesser-known part of Bleckner’s process\, offering new insight into one of the most prolific painters of our time. Bleckner begins by making his own paint and testing it on black paper\, where the experimental brushwork often produces striking results. From there\, he creates a series of small canvases that gradually increase in scale\, leading to the large paintings for which he is best known. \nOver decades\, this approach has yielded hundreds—if not thousands—of works. Guild Hall presents a selection of these rarely seen studies alongside major large-scale paintings. While rooted in process\, the smaller works stand powerfully on their own. SUMMARY:ERIC FREEMAN: THE VOLUME OF COLOR
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition marks the first major institutional solo presentation of Eric Freeman’s work in the East End\, where the artist lived and worked for many years. Freeman’s radiant abstractions transform color into planes of light and pigment that construct space rather than merely depict it. Layers of luminous varnish and saturated tone generate a visual depth that feels structural—at times almost architectural—drawing viewers into fields of color defined by both intensity and calm. \nThe Volume of Color brings together a selection of paintings alongside a small group of furniture pieces designed by Freeman\, revealing a practice shaped by the productive tension between control and emotion\, precision and presence. His work enters into quiet dialogue with the legacies of Josef Albers\, Dan Flavin\, Donald Judd\, Agnes Martin\, Mark Rothko\, and James Turrell. She is a fourth-generation horticulturalist and a third-generation member of The Garden Club of America. Lilee has created floral décor for The Royal Family and clients throughout the East End and the Caribbean\, and is known for being conscious of her environmental footprint. Rayner Artist-in-Residence Robbie Fairchild shares an in-process presentation of his new dance-theater work\, Lord Chamberlain’s Men\, offering audiences a sneak peek ahead of its premiere at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival. \nMarking Fairchild’s debut as a director and choreographer\, Lord Chamberlain’s Men is a dance-theater work inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnets and the origin story of Romeo & Juliet\, exploring themes of identity\, forbidden love\, and sexual longing that resonate throughout Shakespeare’s writing. She highlights collaborative restoration efforts with the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot\, including Dr. Ellen Pikitch and the Indigenous Advisory Council. The bay’s designation as a Mission Blue Hope Spot signifies much more than scientific research and restoration; Hope Spots recognize a water body’s cultural\, recreational\, and traditional importance. Shinnecock Bay is integral to the local Indigenous community and holds great cultural\, ecological\, and spiritual value. \nJoined by Dr. Carl Safina\, marine ecologist\, author\, and founder of The Safina Center\, she reflects on this pivotal moment for understanding our place in the ocean’s intricate web of life.

Ticket holders will be contacted directly with refund information.\n\nArtist Carol Szymanski and poet and art critic Barry Schwabsky present Emergency Eyewash ABC\, a live performance bringing together poetry\, visual art\, and music. \nMoving between poetry\, art\, and music\, the performance features a series of live readings from a new alphabet book for grown-ups written by 28 contemporary American poets alongside projections of Szymanski’s video fantasia on the alphabet and musical improvisation by legendary trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith.
