SUMMARY:ROSS BLECKNER: NEVER THE LESS
DESCRIPTION:Ross Bleckner emerged as a leading artist in New York during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s\, creating paintings that explore change\, loss\, memory\, and the human body. A central figure in the decade’s revival of painting\, he developed a practice that merges psychological\, social\, and political themes within a strong conceptual framework. In 1995\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York presented a mid-career retrospective of his work\, underscoring his importance in contemporary art. \nNEVER THE LESS will highlight a lesser-known part of Bleckner’s process\, offering new insight into one of the most prolific painters of our time. Bleckner begins by making his own paint and testing it on black paper\, where the experimental brushwork often produces striking results. From there\, he creates a series of small canvases that gradually increase in scale\, leading to the large paintings for which he is best known. \nOver decades\, this approach has yielded hundreds—if not thousands—of works. Guild Hall presents a selection of these rarely seen studies alongside major large-scale paintings. While rooted in process\, the smaller works stand powerfully on their own. Together\, they reveal the breadth of Bleckner’s artistic vision\, offering an expansive view of his practice across time—an illustrated timeline through painting. \nThis exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader\, museum director and curator of visual arts\, with support from Philippa Content\, museum manager and registrar and Claire Hunter\, museum coordinator and curatorial associate. \nGALLERY HOURS:\nWEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY\, 12-5 PM from August 9-September 6\nTHURSDAY TO SUNDAY\, 12-5 PM from September 10-October 27\n\nNEW: Third Thursdays! On the third Thursday of every month from May through September\, galleries will stay open until 7:30 PM\, and will include live music in the garden and exhibition-related programs to follow. \nMUSEUM ADMISSION:\n$12 / $10 for Seniors\, 65+\nFree for Members\, Children\, and Students

SUMMARY:ERIC FREEMAN: THE VOLUME OF COLOR
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition marks the first major institutional solo presentation of Eric Freeman’s work in the East End\, where the artist lived and worked for many years. Freeman’s radiant abstractions transform color into planes of light and pigment that construct space rather than merely depict it. Layers of luminous varnish and saturated tone generate a visual depth that feels structural—at times almost architectural—drawing viewers into fields of color defined by both intensity and calm. \nThe Volume of Color brings together a selection of paintings alongside a small group of furniture pieces designed by Freeman\, revealing a practice shaped by the productive tension between control and emotion\, precision and presence. His work enters into quiet dialogue with the legacies of Josef Albers\, Dan Flavin\, Donald Judd\, Agnes Martin\, Mark Rothko\, and James Turrell. Freeman’s subtly modulated surfaces\, sleek yet unmistakably hand-painted\, balance intellectual rigor with sensory immediacy\, collapsing distinctions between painting\, object\, and environment. \nPresented following the artist’s death in 2021\, the exhibition honors Freeman’s sustained contribution to contemporary abstraction and affirms his lasting connection to the East End’s artistic landscape\, where his work quietly expanded the possibilities of color\, light\, and spatial experience. \nThis exhibition is co-curated by artist Nathan Dilworth and Melanie Crader\, museum director and curator of visual arts with support from Philippa Content\, museum manager and registrar and Claire Hunter\, museum coordinator and curatorial associate. \nMUSEUM ADMISSION:\n$12 / $10 for Seniors\, 65+\nFree for Members\, Children\, and Students \n

SUMMARY:STIRRING THE POT: RUSS & DAUGHTERS
DESCRIPTION:Stirring the Pot: Russ & Daughters—Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper \nJoin Florence Fabricant at Guild Hall for an irresistible edition of Stirring the Pot featuring Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper\, fourth-generation owners of Russ & Daughters. They’ll share stories from their family’s legendary Lower East Side appetizing shop\, tracing a century of smoked fish\, bagels\, and New York food culture\, and discuss their new book\, Russ & Daughters: 100 Years of Appetizing. Following the conversation\, guests are invited to a special book signing—an opportunity to meet the authors and take home a signed copy. \nA must-attend for food lovers\, home cooks\, and anyone who savors the traditions that define New York’s culinary heritage. And make sure to grab a complimentary black & white cookie on your way out!\n \nA complimentary breakfast will be served before the program starting at 10 AM. \n\nIn 1907\, a Jewish immigrant named Joel Russ landed in New York City\, where he took a pushcart of herring and built a legacy that would pass down through fathers and daughters (and sons and husbands and wives) for more than a hundred years. Four generations later\, the ancestral heart of Russ & Daughters continues to bustle on the Lower East Side\, with three more locations throughout the city. \nOver the course of a century\, Russ & Daughters has fed hundreds of thousands of customers\, many considering a visit to the original shop on East Houston a family tradition\, weekly ritual\, or New York experience. Now\, for the first time\, Russ & Daughters brings its world-famous institution into readers’ homes with RUSS & DAUGHTERS: 100 Years of Appetizing. Its rich history is told through insider anecdotes from the family and characters on both sides of the counter; illuminating guides to its most famed offerings—smoked salmon\, sable\, sturgeon\, herring\, and caviar; and more than 100 cherished recipes for favorite foods like latkes\, matzo ball soup\, babka\, and bagels among many others. \nNothing can ever replace the experience of taking a number\, kibbitzing with a slicer\, waiting in line\, and ordering your whitefish or belly lox. Yet this book captures some of that infectious Russ & Daughters appetizing spirit\, and most importantly\, brings families and friends together around the table.

SUMMARY:RODERICK GEORGE | KNONAME ARTIST: THE GRAVE'S TEARS
DESCRIPTION:Performed by seven male dancers\, The Grave’s Tears expands on themes first explored in kNoname Artist’s Venom(2024)\, offering a deeper examination of the physical and psychological toll of systemic oppression\, violence\, and erasure against the LGBTQIA+ community. The work centers queer bodies as vessels of memory where grief\, resistance\, intimacy\, and survival coexist. Drawing from the liberatory spirit of the Disco era\, it reflects on a time when joy\, music\, and collective celebration became radical acts of defiance for communities pushed to the margins. In the absence of safety\, visibility\, and institutional care\, queer people built refuge through chosen family and shared movement\, where love functioned as a practice of survival. \nSet against the legacy of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and widespread abandonment\, the work confronts the fragility of communities forced to grieve in isolation. In response\, queer communities forged their own systems of care\, holding one another through loss while insisting on presence.
