SUMMARY:JOEL MESLER: MILES OF SMILES
DESCRIPTION:Joel Mesler: Miles of Smiles is the artist’s first museum exhibition in the region of his adopted home\, where he began a new life in 2017. Mesler’s practice sheds light on universal themes by filtering them through autobiography\, humor\, self-deprecation\, and surprising compositional juxtapositions\, often employing graphic patterns and motifs\, elaborate typography\, and personal iconography. He has explored the power of acceptance\, allowing emotions—as well as the cultural forms in which they become entangled—to exist at the center of his projects. \nMesler—a former art dealer—has always been an artist as well as a collector\, connoisseur\, archivist\, artistic collaborator\, and cultural steward. Miles of Smiles pulls together all of these facets in one presentation. In his East Hampton office and studio\, he lives and works among art and personal effects in a horror vacui environment\, in which he has an unmediated experience with art and objects that inhabit every square inch of his space. The installation features a varied selection of the artist’s own work\, as well as personal objects and works from his collection by other artists with whom he has deep personal connections\, including his contemporaries Sarah Aibel\, Roger Herman\, Sheree Hovsepian\, Rashid Johnson\, Henry Taylor\, and Austyn Weiner as well as artists who have influenced his practice: Francesco Clemente\, Mauricio Lasansky\, and Ben Shahn. \nThrough the installation Miles of Smiles\, Mesler takes us on a journey—a glimpse into the complexity of life\, the value we place on objects\, and our emotional attachment to them. The space will function as a gathering and meeting place\, in which the artist will also host office hours and public programs. \nThis exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader\, Museum Director and Curator of Visual Arts\, with Philippa Content\, Museum Manager and Registrar\, and Claire Hunter\, Museum Coordinator and Curatorial Associate. \n\nGet Your Limited Edition Joel Mesler + Guild Hall Cap \nDesigned to celebrate artist Joel Mesler and his 2025 Guild Hall exhibition\, Joel Mesler: Miles of Smiles\, this Artist + Guild Hall collaboration is available as a very limited-edition cap featuring an iconic Mesler sentiment. \nSupport Guild Hall and help spread miles of smiles wherever you go. Get yours now\, as once these sell out\, they won’t be repeated! \nA classic navy cotton 5-panel baseball cap with white embroidery. \nUnisex. SUMMARY:MARY HEILMANN: WATER WAY
DESCRIPTION:Mary Heilmann: Water Way is the artist’s first large-scale solo presentation at an institution on the East End of Long Island\, where she has been an integral part of the region’s creative community for decades. Heilmann grew up along the California coast\, in both the Bay Area and Los Angeles. She became a competitive diver as a young teenager\, frequently engaged in body surfing\, and later became involved in the beatnik and surfing cultures\, all of which have had a strong influence on her work. Heilmann moved to New York City in 1968\, where she still resides\, and has a home and studio Bridgehampton. \nThroughout her life\, Heilmann has consistently chosen and prioritized living close to water\, which has had a profound impact on her artistic practice. She remembers making a watercolor of the ocean when she was about sixteen years old. This proximity to the ocean has influenced the way she considers light when she is conceiving a painting. For example\, at sunset and moonrise she looks at the sand\, the sky\, and the sea for inspiration for her bold color palette. She characterizes her work as autobiographical\, as she translates her observations into abstractions and often gives her works titles that offer viewers hints about her ideas. Whether reflected in her imagery or in the titles she gives her works\, water has long been a recurring theme throughout her practice. She often translates waves into geometric\, hard-edge patterns and likens this to the way a diver must conceptualize the physical geometry of the body when planning a dive. \nGuild Hall is pleased to present an exhibition that Heilmann has had a strong desire to stage—one that brings together more than 40 works from a focused area of her output. The exhibition includes works on paper\, ceramics\, and paintings from the 1980s to the present. \nThis exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader\, museum director and curator of visual arts\, with Philippa Content\, museum manager and registrar\, and Claire Hunter\, museum coordinator and curatorial associate. \n\nGet Your Limited Edition Mary Heilmann + Guild Hall Tote Bag \nDesigned to celebrate artist Mary Heilmann and her 2025 Guild Hall exhibition\, Mary Heilmann: Water Way\, our Artist + Guild Hall collaboration is available as a very limited-edition tote bag featuring Heilmann’s 2024 work\, Blue Sky Spot. \nWe are excited to share that this is the first time one of Heilmann’s iconic ceramic works has been reproduced as merchandise.  \n100% cotton canvas with a zipper closure and long handles for over-the-shoulder toting. Large enough to carry all of your everyday belongings\, or use it as an overnight bag for weekend jaunts to the Hamptons.  \nSupport Guild Hall while showing off your Water Way style. Get yours now\, as once these sell out\, they won’t be repeated! \nClick HERE to order your tote today! \n \nGuild Hall members receive 10% off with code MEMBER10. Not a member? SUMMARY:THE MATTHIESSEN TALKS: BILL MCKIBBEN
DESCRIPTION:THE MATTHIESSEN TALKS: BILL MCKIBBEN\, A LAST CHANCE FOR THE CLIMATE AND A FRESH CHANCE FOR CIVILIZATION \nPresented with The Peter Matthiessen Center \nWriter\, activist and environmentalist Bill McKibben\, among the first to alert the world of the imminent perils of climate change with his book The End of Nature\, comes to Guild Hall in East Hampton with a powerful message: In the past two years\, with surprisingly little notice\, solar energy has suddenly become the obvious\, mainstream\, cost-efficient energy choice around the world. \nEven as the current U.S. government renews its embrace of fossil fuels and turns the nation away from renewables\, solar power is taking off around the world. Against all the big\, bad things happening on the planet\, this is a very big and hopeful thing. McKibben will discuss groundbreaking revelations in his new book\, Here Comes the Sun\, A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization\, followed by a conversation with environmental activist and PMC president\, Alex Matthiessen. \nThe program will be followed by a book signing in the lobby. Copies of Bill McKibben’s book will be available for purchase in person on the day of the program\, subject to availability. Advance sales are now closed. \n\nABOUT THE PETER MATTHIESSEN CENTER \nSince 2019\, the Peter Matthiessen Center has organized a myriad of popular events on the East End of Long Island–the writer’s home of 55 years from where the great majority of his 33 books was written–in furtherance of the issues he cared and wrote about most: protection of the environment and native peoples and (hu)man’s spiritual search for meaning. In 2025\, the Matthiessen Talks was launched\, a series of public events\, or “dialogues\,” designed to amplify the views of writers and activists who are working and organizing on behalf of nature and indigenous peoples. In addition to sponsoring the series\, the PMC aims to establish an international literary prize in Peter Matthiessen’s name to support and promote writers producing works of fiction and non-fiction that aim\, directly or indirectly\, to address the most challenging issues of our time–and\, in this way\, further empower and mobilize the grassroots movements toiling to save civilization and the planet\, as we know them. \nmatthiessencenter.org
