SUMMARY:FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: ARTIST-MADE FURNITURE
DESCRIPTION:“I started making couches about 1969 or 1970. I needed some place to sit down\, which is the best reason for making them\, I suppose.”  —John Chamberlain.\nArtists often come to be associated with specific mediums or bodies of work when in fact their practices are much more expansive. Visual artists are frequently also musicians\, designers\, performers\, filmmakers\, writers\, furniture makers\, and so on. An encounter with one of the couches made by John Chamberlain\, an artist best known for his metal sculptures\, can be surprising\, but the reality is that artists integrate their studio practices into all their life activities. \nThis presentation focuses on East End artists who have produced functional furniture as an extension of their creative practices—as a means of problem-solving\, as an element of designed living\, and as a way to foster social spaces. Functional Relationships: Artist-Made Furniture presents work by Scott Bluedorn\, John Chamberlain\, Liz Collins\, Quentin Curry\, Peter Dayton\, Connie Fox\, Kurt Gumaer\, Mary Heilmann\, Yung Jake\, Donald Judd\, Julian Schnabel\, Karen Simon\, Strong-Cuevas\, Mark Wilson\, Robert Wilson\, Evan Yee\, Nico Yektai\, and Almond Zigmund. \nIn conjunction with Functional Relationships\, Guild Hall commissioned two projects as further explorations of this common practice: Lindsay Morris’s photographs of interior spaces show how artists utilize furniture and shape their domestic environments\, while Almond Zigmund’s installation Wading Room in the Marks Family South Gallery provides an artist-designed environment for activation through public use and a series of participatory programs. \nThis exhibition was organized by Melanie Crader\, museum director and curator of visual arts\, with Philippa Content\, museum manager and registrar and Claire Hunter\, museum coordinator and curatorial associate.

SUMMARY:ALMOND ZIGMUND: WADING ROOM
DESCRIPTION:Almond Zigmund makes large-scale site-responsive installations\, discrete sculptures\, works on paper\, and paintings that explore the interplay between space\, perception\, and the built environment. The multidisciplinary arts institution has long been driven by the conviction that engaging with the arts—through exhibitions\, performances\, and meaningful dialogue—sparks connection\, deepens understanding\, and inspires people to participate more actively in the world beyond the boundaries of the East End.  \nThis mission expanded in the 1980s with the launch of Hot Topics\, a series designed to spark civic discourse\, featuring notable panelists like Peter Jennings\, recognized for his commitment to democratic journalism. Today\, alongside its rich offerings in performing and visual arts\, Guild Hall continues to foster thoughtful dialogue with leading luminaries across diverse fields.

SUMMARY:GIBNEY COMPANY
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a transformative evening as Gibney Company\, one of New York’s leading contemporary dance ensembles\, makes its debut at Guild Hall. With a powerful mix of athleticism\, artistry\, and thought-provoking storytelling\, this debut performance showcases a carefully curated program of new and reimagined works by three visionary choreographers: Roy Assaf\, Lucinda Childs and William Forsythe. \nPROGRAM \nRoy Assaf – A Couple\nPerhaps you are a couple. Perhaps you are lifelong friends\, perhaps soulmates\, perhaps you have history\, perhaps you had an affair\, perhaps you once fought together for a greater purpose\, perhaps you fight every day over little things but share a love that survives them all. \nWilliam Forsythe – Trio (of six) (1996\, reconfigured for Gibney Company)\nTrio (of six) is a reconfiguration of William Forsythe’s celebrated 1996 work\, which had been a staple of his repertoire in Frankfurt\, Germany. Restaged several times in its original trio form\, including at the Paris Opera Ballet\, Forsythe requested the opportunity to adapt the work for Gibney Company\, whose small ensemble offered a unique level of organizational flexibility. This six-person staging reflects Forsythe’s practice of evolving works over time\, adapting them to different environments and creative contexts. \nINTERMISSION \nLucinda Childs – Three Dances (for prepared piano) John Cage \nLucinda Childs’ Three Dances (for prepared piano) John Cage explores the rhythmic intensity of John Cage’s 1944-45 composition Three Dances through a lens of movement. Childs’ signature postmodern minimalist precision and deep reverence for structured repetition shine in this world premiere for eight dancers. The work exemplifies Childs’ lifelong engagement with transdisciplinarity and formalism\, while also nodding to her roots in the Judson Dance Theater. It is a stunning exploration of how sound and movement can intimately coexist.

SUMMARY:MUSICIANS FROM THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate evening of chamber music showcasing the artistry and individual voices of New York Philharmonic musicians. This thoughtfully curated program offers a journey through three unique sound worlds—each highlighting the expressive potential of the string trio. From the youthful lyricism of Schubert to the effervescent charm of Françaix and the structural brilliance of Dohnányi\, this unmissable concert celebrates the conversational beauty and rich variety of the chamber music tradition. \nMusicians from the New York Philharmonic\nQuan Ge\, violin\nCong Wu\, viola\nRu-Pei Yeh\, cello \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM \nFranz Schubert\nString Trio in B-flat Major\, D. 471 (1816) \n\n\nWritten when Schubert was nineteen\, the String Trio in B-flat Major\, D. 471 offers a glimpse into the composer’s evolving chamber music style. Originally intended to be a multi-movement work\, only the first movement and an unfinished Andante survive. The single completed movement truly represents the bridge of Schubert’s growing compositional voice\, both foreshadowing longer lines and greater lyricism while nodding to his predecessors and classical ancestry. \n\n\nThe movement unfolds with singing grace\, opening with a warm melody in the violin that exemplifies Schubert’s gift for unforgettable themes. Throughout\, he demonstrates remarkable facility in handling the trio texture\, with each instrument given moments to shine. The writing balances classical proportion with touches of harmonic adventure that hint at Schubert’s more exploratory later works. Despite its smaller scale\, D. 471 embraces the intimate expressivity and melodic richness that would become hallmarks of Schubert’s chamber masterpieces later on\, inviting listeners into a world of sunlit\, conversational music-making. \nJean Françaix\nString Trio (1933) \n\n\nJean Françaix’s String Trio cleverly blends the composer’s neoclassical structure with irresistible wit. Composed in 1933 when Françaix was just 21\, this sparkling work demonstrates the craftsmanship and charm that would define his career. The work balances technical brilliance with an effortless grace\, featuring crystalline textures that shines a light on each musician’s virtuosity. \n\n\nA student of Nadia Boulanger\, Françaix embraced clarity and precision while maintaining a distinctly French sensibility. His musical language—rooted in tradition yet infused with playful irreverence—creates a work that is sophisticated without being severe. The String Trio’s dancing rhythms\, unexpected harmonic shifts\, and vivacious dialogue between violin\, viola\, and cello perfectly capture Françaix’s desire to make his music enjoyable\, wanting the listener to arrive at that joy on their own\, or in his words: “They should remember they are free human beings\, not obedient automata. I want them to crush snobbery\, fashion\, and envy with the power of common sense and to enjoy my music if it gives them pleasure\, which of course I hope it does.” \nINTERMISSION  \n\n\nErnst von Dohnányi\nSerenade for String Trio in C Major\, Op. 10 (1902) \nDohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio stands as one of the composer’s most beloved chamber works\, elegantly bridging late Romanticism with twentieth-century sensibilities. Composed in 1902\, this work showcases Dohnányi’s gift for writing music of both substance and charm\, balancing both sophistication with broader appeal. \n\n\nAlmost serving as an ode to “forms”\, the five-movement work demonstrates Dohnanyi’s ability to produce imaginative ideas within various constructs. The work opens with a spirited march that returns as a finale with a sorrowful Romanza\, a virtuosic Scherzo featuring folk-like elements\, and a theme and variations\, displaying Dohnányi’s masterful contrapuntal skill. Throughout\, the composer produces full textures from just three instruments\, exploiting their distinctive colors while maintaining perfect balance. \nThe Serenade brilliantly demonstrates why Dohnányi was considered a leading figure in early twentieth-century Hungarian music\, alongside his contemporaries Bartók and Kodály.

SUMMARY:HAMPTONS INSTITUTE: ORDER OR CHAOS—THE ECONOMY UNDER TRUMP
DESCRIPTION:Trump’s sweeping tariff overhaul—dubbed “Liberation Day”—sent shockwaves through global markets and rattled investors. It’s the biggest shift in the international economic order in at least 80 years. What happens next? Will it spark a manufacturing revival and shrink the trade deficit—or fuel inflation\, crush small businesses\, and stall growth? Fred Hochberg\, seasoned business executive and government leader who served eight years of service as Chairman and President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) and Glenn Hutchins\, chairman of North Island and North Island Ventures\, and co-founder of Silver Lake are joined in conversation with Gillian Tett\, journalist\, author and member of the editorial board for The Financial Times. \n\nClick HERE for tickets. \nFULL SCHEDULE: \nGUARDRAILS ON DEMOCRACY\nMONDAY\, JULY 7\, 7 PM \nSNL: 50 YEARS OF AMERICAN SATIRE\nMONDAY\, JULY 14\, 7 PM \nPOST-PLAY CHILDHOOD\nMONDAY\, JULY 21\, 7 PM \nORDER OR CHAOS: THE ECONOMY UNDER TRUMP\nMONDAY\, JULY 28\, 7 PM \nHamptons Institute is a forum for ideas that shape both our community and the world. Founded in 2010 at Guild Hall\, the Hamptons Institute returns with a compelling series of dynamic conversations. Each session features world-renown experts from diverse fields exploring a single topic through multiple perspectives\, followed by an audience Q&A.  \nThe Hamptons Institute’s 2025 installment is guest-curated by Ellen Chesler—author and Hamptons Institute co-founder (alongside Guild Hall’s late Chair\, Mickey Straus)—and Patricia Duff\, founder of the nonpartisan nonprofit The Common Good\, dedicated to civic participation\, civil dialogue\, and finding solutions through common ground. \nDidn’t make it? Watch the talk now on YouTube! \n \n\nABOUT HAMPTONS INSTITUTE \nFounded in 1931 by Mary Woodhouse and her husband Lorenzo\, Guild Hall began as a civic institution anchored by a museum and theater.
