SUMMARY:JULIAN SCHNABEL: SELECTED WORKS FROM HOME
DESCRIPTION:MARKS FAMILY GALLERY SOUTH\, NORTH\, AND & TITO SPIGA EXHIBITION SPACE \nJulian Schnabel is a leading figure among the artists who reinvigorated the practice of painting in the late 1970s\, adopting unconventional materials and ways to use them to create monumental works. He remains one of the seminal and most prolific artists of the last four decades and has been a significant figure in contemporary art discourse since his first New York solo show at Mary Boone Gallery in 1979. His experimental and often revolutionary approach extends throughout his creative work in various mediums—including painting\, sculpture\, architecture\, and award-winning feature films. Every aspect of his life is filtered through a painter’s lens\, as Schnabel lives and works in carefully considered spaces\, often en plein air\, surrounded by objects dating from antiquity to the present\, many created by artists and artist friends\, both living and dead\, and by the artist himself. \nJulian Schnabel: Selected Works from Home presents a selection of the artist’s paintings\, drawings\, and sculptures from his personal collection—the works he has chosen to keep for himself and to live among. The works on view\, made over the last 45 years\, include an early wax painting\, Procession (for Jean Vigo) from 1979; Salinas Cruz\, a painting on velvet from 1984; paintings on printed materials and tarpaulins; and multiple plate paintings\, which show the different possibilities of working in this manner and with this specific material over decades. Schnabel’s art evokes a deep yet elusive connection to humanity. The installation of his large-scale works within Guild Hall’s intimate galleries offers visitors an all-encompassing\, contemplative experience—a rare opportunity to lose oneself in the artworks\, their history\, and their transformation —and to capture a sense of time suspended. \nThis exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader\, director of visual arts\, in close collaboration with the artist\, and Patrick Hillman\, executive assistant to Julian Schnabel. \n\nFollowing the success of their 2022 summer pop-up in East Hampton\, TASCHEN is thrilled to return to the Hamptons\, partnering with the cultural heart of the East End – Guild Hall. \nCoinciding with the opening of Guild Hall’s summer exhibition Julian Schnabel: Selected Works from Home\, TASCHEN will transform a section of the historic museum into a fully operational pop-up shop. \nThe TASCHEN pop-up will feature several Julian Schnabel x TASCHEN projects\, including an exclusive collection of hand-painted skateboards by the artist\, available to US collectors for the first time. The pop-up will also showcase limited edition book projects with contemporaries such as Annie Leibovitz and David Hockney\, alongside a curated selection of TASCHEN’s most celebrated art books\, including Jean-Michel Basquiat\, New York. Portrait of a City\, and Peter Beard. \nThe TASCHEN Pop-Up at Guild Hall is open to the public Thursday to Sunday\, 12–5 PM and before theater programs.

SUMMARY:2024 GARDEN AS ART
DESCRIPTION:Garden as Art returns on Sunday\, September 8. The event will begin with a 10 AM talk by Charlie Marder\, owner of Marders\, in Guild Hall’s Hilarie and Mitchell Morgan Theater and will continue from 12-4 PM with self-guided tours of spectacular gardens in Wainscott and East Hampton. \n10 AM TALK at Guild Hall: Charlie Marder\, Marders \n12-4 PM Self-Guided Garden Tours \nTalk Only: $25\nFull Event: $200 ($150 for Members) \nView images of the gardens HERE. \nGarden of Carl Bengtsson and Kathy Sutherland \nDesigned and installed by Harmonia Inc \nAbundance of Nature Warms Sanctuary on Georgica Road\nThis newly built contemporary construction required a landscape design and installation to make it feel like home. The extensive New York stone entrance of earth tone hues\, which is lined by river birch\, early blooming Helleborus\, and Annabelle hydrangea\, greet you as you ascend to the entrance of the home. A beautiful allée of white blooming crepe myrtles is the entrée of the extended views of the vast reserve in the distance. The circular patio\, complimented by casual seating and a fire pit\, is a perfect spot to enjoy the fireflies in the reserve. One of the property’s added features is a custom-built life-size treehouse.   \nGarden in Wainscott \nGarden design: Hollander Design Landscape Architects\nArchitect: Merrell Soule Architects\nConstruction:  SilverLining Inc.\nInterior Design: Eve Robinson Associates\nExterior Lighting Consultant: Orsman Design\nGreen Roof: Sempergreen \nDrawing on a distinctive and historically significant part of Long Island’s agricultural history\, this home links a Peconic Land Trust area with an agricultural reserve and draws its inspiration from a 1938 potato barn originally on the site. The landscape creates comfortable\, easy outdoor living for alfresco dining and cooking\, lounging by the pool\, and a workout space. Naturalized meadows and native plantings throughout the site help the home feel timeless. Green roofs on the home are aesthetically appealing while offering temperature regulation and encouraging biodiversity. A stepped garden between the house and pool invites glimpses of butterflies and birds along the path. \nBehind the Brick Wall on Main Street \nPeek behind the ivy-covered brick wall of this beautiful Main Street property\, and you will find an immense 90-year-old crimson weeping Japanese maple\, a perennial garden bordering the croquet court which is surrounded by 36 giant boxwoods\, and a bubbling pond with lilies and water hyacinths.  A putting green adds playfulness to this pristine garden\, which includes recent additions of a hidden fort and theater to the delight of the owner’s grandchildren. \nThe first flower show of the Garden Club of East Hampton was held here in 1916\, then the home of May Groot Manson\, a leading suffragette for whom there is a historic marker in front of this house on Main Street. The garden was originally designed by Galen Williams but today is cared for by Elizabeth Gardens. \nThe Woodhouse Playhouse \nGarden tour-goers will be invited to view The Playhouse interior as well as tour the gardens. \nDesigned by Guild Hall founder Mrs. Lorenzo Woodhouse in 1916\, expressly to showcase performance art\, The Playhouse was praised by noted architect Robert A.M. Stern\, as “the most perfectly preserved” of the Woodhouse family properties. Mrs. Woodhouse’s public gifts to the community include Guild Hall and the East Hampton Public Library. From 1917-1933\, The Playhouse served as a lively performing arts hall whose varied presentations included stage classics by first-tier actors; concerts by string quartets and The Westminster Choir; and dance\, including works by Isadora Duncan\, and by Ruth St. Denis – whose gauze-clad Denishawn dancers transformed the Playhouse gardens into an ethereal outdoor stage in 1932. Years later\, when Elizabeth & David Brockman became its owners\, they brought to The Playhouse their intense love of classical music and performance. The family has maintained The Playhouse as both a residence and arts venue since 1958. \nThe grounds of this nearly three-acre property feature a gunite pool\, a serene fountain\, and a variety of mature specimen trees such as beech\, sycamore\, and elm\, kept since Mrs. Woodhouse’s days and still providing a private oasis of natural beauty today. The property’s southern border is flanked by acres of reserve land\, nature trails\, and a wildlife sanctuary\, ensuring tranquility and seclusion. \nLandscape Details’ Office Gardens \nVisit the exquisite gardens at Landscape Details. The landscape was carefully designed with an eye for detail and aesthetics\, featuring intricate stonework that complements the building’s architecture\, a serene meditation pool that provides a tranquil retreat\, and a variety of beautiful plantings that add color and texture throughout the property. Each element of the landscape was chosen to enhance the overall ambiance\, creating a harmonious blend of nature and structure. \nIf you are interested in being a sponsor of Garden as Art\, email Kendra Korczak at events@guildhall.org or call 631.324.0806 x116.

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: STAN HERMAN IN CONVERSATION WITH FERN MALLIS
DESCRIPTION:Please join Stan Herman\, author of the widely acclaimed memoir Uncross Your Legs: A Life in Fashion for a thoughtful\, engaging and fun-filled conversation with longtime friend and fellow fashion icon Fern Mallis. \nOn any given day\, more people will be “wearing” Stan Herman than any other American fashion designer. Having recently celebrated his 96th birthday\, he is the most acclaimed uniform designer of our time – and that’s just part of his remarkable\, well-lived and well-loved life. Herman reflects on his background as a Brooklyn born\, Passaic\, NJ-raised young man\, his Army service in Europe during the Korean War and his burgeoning fashion career a young freelance designer in the fashion hothouse of the Garment District. Later\, he served for 16 years as head of the Council of Fashion Designers of America\, where he was instrumental in bringing New York Fashion Week to Bryant Park – all the while continuing his thriving corporate uniform and\, popular leisurewear design businesses. \nThe book is also a deeply moving and insightful memoir\, following personal triumphs and tragedies\, including his nearly 40-year relationship with novelist Gene Horowitz\, who tragically suffered a heart attack and passed away in 1992. Together they lived their lives in the shadow of the AIDS crisis that decimated their personal and professional worlds. They also shared a beloved poodle named “Mozart\,” who helped fill the void when Herman found himself suddenly alone. Herman writes with good humor and direct compassion\, recalling the cruel and casual racism he witnessed in the military\, his focus on animal rights within the fashion industry – as well as encountering the indignities and joys of his nearly 10 decades. Learn the history of the man whose vision has dramatically helped forge and transform American style and fashion. \nFollowing the event\, copies of Uncross Your Legs: A Life in Fashion will be available for purchase and signing. \n This program will take place in Guild Hall’s Hilarie and Mitchell Morgan Theater.

SUMMARY:TAYLOR MAC: BORN TO RUN (TO AND FROM THE HAMPTONS)
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS $85-$155 ($75.50-$139.50)\nNote: This work may include mature content and is intended for adult audiences. \nMAKE A NIGHT OF IT! Our friends at Almond Restaurant in Bridgehampton are offering 10% off your meal when you show your Taylor Mac ticket. They are open late\, so we encourage you to head over after the show for a meal\, cocktails\, and fun. \n“If you’re not invited to the party\, throw a better one.” — Taylor Mac \nOne of the most singular artists of our time\, Taylor Mac – performance artist\, singer\, playwright\, director\, and actor– creates fearlessly irreverent works that build community through the making of theater. Equal parts community organizer\, Elizabethan fool\, and “contemporary sage” (The Guardian)\, Taylor Mac (who uses the pronoun ‘judy’) appears decked and bedazzled in gloriously irreverent regalia in a performance that doesn’t “just defy categorization; [Mac] makes the categories themselves seem irrelevant.” (Time Out NY).  \nNearly a decade ago\, Wesley Morris of The New York Times called Taylor Mac’s marathon performance art concert A 24-Decade History of Popular Music “one of the great experiences of my life”  before it became the subject of an HBO original feature documentary film. Taylor Mac continues to reframe and reflect on American history  through spectacular original performances.   \nIn “Taylor Mac: Born to Run (To and From the Hamptons)\,” seasoned provocateur Taylor Mac punctures New York’s beautiful bubble with a set built to meet Hamptonites on their own turf via a fresh look on our fragile democracy. This new evening of  songs and Mac’s signature banter will feature recent works – including songs from the 24-Decade project and Bark of Millions\, a new rock opera meditation on queerness – written in collaboration with the composer and Music Director Matt Ray and accompanied by an incomparable band. \nAs a visual feast\, the event includes fantastical costumes by Machine Dazzle\, who recently won the Creative Arts Emmy for “Outstanding Costumes For Variety\, Nonfiction or Reality Programming” for his designs in the HBO documentary “Taylor Mac’s 24 Decade History of Popular Music.” \n“Fabulousness can come in many forms\, and Taylor Mac seems intent on assuming each and every one of them.” – The New York Times \n“Mac is one of this country’s most heroic and disarmingly funny playwrights.” – American Theatre Magazine \n“One of the most exciting theater artists of our time.”– TimeOut New York \nTaylor Mac is a playwright\, actor\, singer-songwriter\, performance artist\, director and producer. Mac is a MacArthur “genius award” Fellow\, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist\, the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award\, Tony nominee for Best Play\, a recipient of the Kennedy Prize\, the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award\, a Guggenheim\, a Drama League Award\, a NY Drama Critics Circle Award\, two Obies\, and two Bessies. His documentary Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music was directed by Oscar-winning directors Rob Epstein and Jeffery Friedman and premiered on HBO in 2023. \nTaylor Mac\, Lyrics\, Concept\, Direction and Performer\nMatt Ray\, Music Director\, Arranger\, Musician/Keys\nViva DeConcini\,  Musician/Guitar\nGary Wang\, Musician/Bass\nShirazette Tinnin\, Musician/Drums\nMarián Gómez Villota\, Sound \nGet prepped and watch Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music on HBO! \n \n
