SUMMARY:JULIAN SCHNABEL: SELECTED WORKS FROM HOME
DESCRIPTION:MARKS FAMILY GALLERY SOUTH\, NORTH\, AND & TITO SPIGA EXHIBITION SPACE \nJulian Schnabel is a leading figure among the artists who reinvigorated the practice of painting in the late 1970s\, adopting unconventional materials and ways to use them to create monumental works. He remains one of the seminal and most prolific artists of the last four decades and has been a significant figure in contemporary art discourse since his first New York solo show at Mary Boone Gallery in 1979. His experimental and often revolutionary approach extends throughout his creative work in various mediums—including painting\, sculpture\, architecture\, and award-winning feature films. Every aspect of his life is filtered through a painter’s lens\, as Schnabel lives and works in carefully considered spaces\, often en plein air\, surrounded by objects dating from antiquity to the present\, many created by artists and artist friends\, both living and dead\, and by the artist himself. \nJulian Schnabel: Selected Works from Home presents a selection of the artist’s paintings\, drawings\, and sculptures from his personal collection—the works he has chosen to keep for himself and to live among. The works on view\, made over the last 45 years\, include an early wax painting\, Procession (for Jean Vigo) from 1979; Salinas Cruz\, a painting on velvet from 1984; paintings on printed materials and tarpaulins; and multiple plate paintings\, which show the different possibilities of working in this manner and with this specific material over decades. Schnabel’s art evokes a deep yet elusive connection to humanity. The installation of his large-scale works within Guild Hall’s intimate galleries offers visitors an all-encompassing\, contemplative experience—a rare opportunity to lose oneself in the artworks\, their history\, and their transformation —and to capture a sense of time suspended. \nThis exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader\, director of visual arts\, in close collaboration with the artist\, and Patrick Hillman\, executive assistant to Julian Schnabel. \n\nFollowing the success of their 2022 summer pop-up in East Hampton\, TASCHEN is thrilled to return to the Hamptons\, partnering with the cultural heart of the East End – Guild Hall. \nCoinciding with the opening of Guild Hall’s summer exhibition Julian Schnabel: Selected Works from Home\, TASCHEN will transform a section of the historic museum into a fully operational pop-up shop. \nThe TASCHEN pop-up will feature several Julian Schnabel x TASCHEN projects\, including an exclusive collection of hand-painted skateboards by the artist\, available to US collectors for the first time. The pop-up will also showcase limited edition book projects with contemporaries such as Annie Leibovitz and David Hockney\, alongside a curated selection of TASCHEN’s most celebrated art books\, including Jean-Michel Basquiat\, New York. Portrait of a City\, and Peter Beard. \nThe TASCHEN Pop-Up at Guild Hall is open to the public Thursday to Sunday\, 12–5 PM and before theater programs.

SUMMARY:HAMPTONSFILM SUMMER DOCS - SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS $35 ($31.50 FOR MEMBERS) \nDirected by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui\nPart of the annual HamptonsFilm SummerDocs Series \n  \n\n\n\nSUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY tells of Reeve’s astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star\, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four SUPERMAN films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After becoming a quadriplegic\, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries\, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care—all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family. \nFrom the directors of McQUEEN\, Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui\, this film includes never-before-seen intimate home movies and an extraordinary trove of personal archive material\, as well as the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve’s three children about their father\, and interviews with the A-list Hollywood actors who were Reeve’s colleagues and friends. The film is a moving and vivid cinematic telling of Reeve’s remarkable story. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures\, SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY is a presentation of DC Studios\, HBO Documentary Films\, CNN Films and Words+Pictures\, and a production of Passion Pictures\, Misfits Entertainment and Jenco Films. \nA Q&A with Christopher Reeve’s son Will Reeve will follow the screening.

SUMMARY:BOB MACKIE: NAKED ILLUSION
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion followed by a discussion with writer\, editor\, and New York Times Best-Selling Author\, Derek C. Blasberg\, and the legend himself\, Bob Mackie! \nBob Mackie: Naked Illusion showcases the six-decade career of award-winning costume designer\, Bob Mackie. And like his costumes\, Bob Mackie is wholly unique and unfiltered\, which makes for a compelling and candid subject. The film examines Bob’s unique upbringing\, those whom he has held dear within his inner circle\, and the familial surprises in his life that have all contributed to the optimism and audacity present in his work. \nBecause the film is fully authorized\, Quixotic Endeavors was given access to the full Bob Mackie archive\, which has been meticulously kept and curated with many rare and unseen artifacts\, including the outfits that didn’t make the cut. We also capture the over-the-top costumes as they get sequined and beaded from sketch to stage. Specific highlights include some of the soon-to-be lost art methods by old-world artisans that help make each outfit Mackie conjures something to behold and remember. \nThe documentary feature includes original interviews with Bob Mackie clients and collaborators\, along with those he has inspired – designers\, stylists\, comedians and actors\, as well as Bob’s first-person account of some of his most iconic looks from “The Carol Burnett Show’s” Startlett O’Hara dress to Cher’s 1986 Academy Awards look with feathered headdress and Tina Turner’s iconic concert costumes. Bob Mackie is a truly peerless and timeless costume designer\, with interviews from Cher to Pink\, to Tom Ford and Miley Cyrus\, to Rupaul and Carol Burnett a testament to that fact. \n\nFILM CREDITS \nDirected and Written by Matthew Miele\nProduced by Anne Chertoff Tavelin\nExecutive Producers: Anne Chertoff Tavelin\, Mary D’Souza\, Stephen McCarthy\, Joe McFate\, Matthew Miele\, Clive Gershon\, Benjamin Charbit & Ezmina Tauran \nCinematographer: J. SUMMARY:DILLA TIME: THE DILLA EXPERIENCE
DESCRIPTION:DILLA TIME: THE DILLA EXPERIENCE WITH DAN CHARNAS\, JEFF PERETZ\, AND SPECIAL GUEST NATE SMITH \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS $45-$85 ($40.50-$76.50 FOR MEMBERS) \nDilla Time: The Dilla Experience with Dan Charnas\, Jeff Peretz\, and special guest Nate Smith will highlight the life and work of J Dilla\, the hip-hop beatmaker who changed the way musicians all over the world play their instruments. \nJoin Dan Charnas\, author of The New York Times bestseller Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla\, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm\, along with Jeff Peretz\, coordinator of the Musicianship & Songwriting area at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music\, and legendary drummer Nate Smith\, for an interactive\, multimedia evening of music\, ideas\, and conversation\, including a live drumming demo by Smith. \nJames Dewitt Yancey\, also known as “Jay Dee\,” “J. Dilla” or simply “Dilla.” His professional music career was short\, spanning a dozen years before his death from a rare blood disease in 2006. But his influence in that period shifted the sound of popular music; and in the decade since the passing of the Detroit-born artist\, his ideas have compelled a new generation of musicians — both in the electronic and traditional realms — who have drawn inspiration from Dilla’s music and rhythmic and compositional ideas. \n\nJ Dilla was an American record producer and rapper. He emerged during the mid-1990s underground hip hop scene in Detroit\, Michigan\, as a member of the group Slum Village. He was also a member of the Soulquarians\, a musical collective active during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He additionally collaborated with Madlib as Jaylib\, releasing the album Champion Sound. His final album was Donuts\, which was released days before Yancey’s death. Although his life was short\, he is considered one of the most influential producers in hip-hop and popular music. J Dilla’s music raised the artistic level of hip-hop production in Detroit. According to The Guardian\, “His affinity for crafting lengthy\, melodic loops peppered with breakbeats and vocal samples took instrumental hip-hop into new\, more musically complex realms.” In particular\, his approach to drum programming\, with its loose\, or “drunk” style that experimented with non-standard quantization\, has been influential on producers and drummers.

SUMMARY:MICHELLE IN CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:Through sharing the sacred space of meals and the secret space of dreams\, MICHELLE presents a picture of a band enthralled by their craft\, a group capable of melding six unique perspectives and backgrounds into one cohesive\, impressive collection. Their 2022 album\, AFTER DINNER WE TALK DREAMS\, is the culmination of what it means for six friends and collaborators to continuously reimagine their world on 14 succinct tracks. \nBorn-and-bred New Yorkers\, MICHELLE formed in 2018 around their celebrated debut album HEATWAVE. The band is comprised of Sofia D’Angelo\, Julian Kaufman\, Charlie Kilgore\, Layla Ku\, Emma Lee and Jamee Lockard. On their forthcoming record\, the predominantly POC and queer collective are closer than ever before as they continue to mix and match the writing and production groups amongst the six of them. Jamee notes\, “We’ve learned how to maximize everyone’s strengths by listening to each other.” \nThe hallmarks of MICHELLE’s music — layered vocal harmonies\, analog synthesizers\, vibrant percussion\, smoldering hooks — dominate the sonic landscape of the album. Songs hop across genres\, from funky R&B to bedroom slow jams to amped-up beat-heavy anthems and more. And the songwriting on AFTER DINNER has been elevated as there is a depth and prowess at work that builds off the band’s early songs\, something they admit was learned by reflecting and allowing for artistic growth. \nThe Band:\nSofia D’Angelo – Vocals\nJulian Kaufman – Drums\nCharlie Kilgore – Bass\nLayla Kuriloff – Vocals\nEmma Lee – Vocals\nJamee Lockard – Vocals\n \n \n

SUMMARY:ARTIST TALK: DIANE TUFT AND APRIL GORNIK
DESCRIPTION:Please join mixed-media artist Diane Tuft and painter April Gornik for a conversation moderated by Andy Battaglia\, Executive Editor of ARTnews and Art in America\, to discuss climate change and the environment in connection with their artistic practices. \nThe event coincides with the recent release of Tuft’s latest monograph\, Entropy\, which focuses on water and its radical transformation under the unrelenting pressures of climate change. \nA book signing with Diane Tuft will follow the discussion. The book can be purchased after the program for $80 plus tax. \n\nABOUT ENTROPY \nA photographic exploration detailing the poetry and fragility of nature amidst the tragedy of climate change. \nSince 1998\, mixed-media artist Diane Tuft has traveled the world recording the environmental factors shaping Earth’s landscape. Entropy is Tuft’s fourth monograph capturing the sublime and awe-inspiring beauty of nature as it is radically transformed under the unrelenting pressures of climate change. \nThe exquisite collection of photographs provides a captivating glimpse into the rapidly changing landscapes of our world. Tuft focuses specifically on water as its subject\, contrasting global sea-level rise with water depletion in Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Compelling essays by prominent figures in art and science contributed by Bonnie K. Baxter\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Biology and Director of Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster University\, and twentieth-century art historian Stacey Epstein\, Ph.D. add depth and insight to Tuft’s work and its significance in the context of climate change. \nWeaving passages of haiku with her beguiling photographs\, Tuft’s newest monograph is packaged in a luxe-cloth-wrapped case screenprinted with her artwork Journey’s End featuring the Great Salt Lake. An extraordinary book\, Entropy is a dramatic call to arms inspiring collective action for the critical preservation of nature.
