SUMMARY:TED CAREY: QUEER AS FOLK
DESCRIPTION:MARKS FAMILY GALLERY NORTH/TITO SPIGA EXHIBITION SPACE \nBorn and raised in Chester\, Pennsylvania\, Edward “Ted” Fawcett Carey (1932–1985) moved to New York in 1955. There he pursued a career in graphic design\, forged a close friendship with Andy Warhol\, and later developed a distinctive mode of painting informed by his keen interest in American folk art. While living between New York and East Hampton in the 1970s and 1980s\, Carey produced a small yet compelling body of work that mimics aspects of vernacular painting\, chronicles his life and relationships\, and pictures facets of queer culture. Sharply observed and highly detailed\, Carey’s faux-naïf paintings depict some of his favorite haunts in New York and celebrate the creative lives of other gay men. \nIndebted to the foresight and generosity of Carey’s longtime partner\, this exhibition draws from the Tito Spiga Bequest to Guild Hall. It surveys Ted Carey’s art for the first time since 1985\, when an East Hampton gallery mounted a memorial show of his paintings in the days following his death from AIDS. \nThis exhibition is organized by Matthew Nichols\, PhD\, independent curator. \nGalleries are open Friday to Monday\, 12-5 PM. Museum admission is always free.\n \nMember Preview Day: Saturday\, May 18\, 12-5 PM\nNot a member? JOIN today! \n\nRELATED PROGRAMS \nCurator Talk: Matthew Nichols\nSunday\, June 2\, 2 PM\nIn conjunction with the exhibition Ted Carey: Queer as Folk\, guest curator Matthew Nichols will discuss the art historical and cultural contexts of Ted Carey’s life and work. The queer content of Carey’s New York paintings and his tributes to other gay artists will also be examined. \nIn Conversation: Anne Buckwalter and Matthew Nichols\nSunday\, June 23\, 2 PM\nIn conjunction with the exhibition Ted Carey: Queer as Folk\, guest curator Matthew Nichols will discuss aspects of the show with the artist Anne Buckwalter. Their talk will explore how Carey and Buckwalter share roots in southeastern Pennsylvania\, draw inspiration from regional folk art traditions\, and address gender and sexuality in their paintings. \n\n

SUMMARY:CONVERSATIONS ACROSS TIME: FIBER ARTS THEN AND NOW
DESCRIPTION:CONVERSATIONS ACROSS TIME: FIBER ARTS THEN AND NOW\nwith Estrellita Brodsky & Joanne Pillsbury \nTo close out the exhibition Spin A Yarn\, Joanne Pillsbury\, specialist in the art and archaeology of the ancient Americas\, will discuss with exhibition curator Estrellita Brodsky two extraordinary textile traditions separated by at least 500 years to explore the striking connections between artist of the ancient Andes and those of the 20th and 21st centuries. \nThis program will take place in Guild Hall’s newly renovated theater. \n\nSpin a Yarn takes its title from an expression believed to have originated in sailors’ practice of telling stories\, often tall tales\, while repairing ropes during long sea voyages. Delving into the complex relationship between textile labor and storytelling\, the exhibition examines the use of textiles as vehicles for the preservation of memories and knowledge. The terms textile and text are derived from the Latin texere (to weave)\, and while Western cultures have historically prioritized the written word\, many others\, particularly in Latin America\, have relied on a rich tradition of using threads\, knots\, and woven materials to record and transmit information. \nSpin a Yarn brings together a diverse selection of fiberbased works dating from ancient Andean times to the present. Some of the artists featured reflect on the weavings and feather works of pre-Hispanic cultures as precursors of geometric abstraction\, while others explore and build on the embroidery and weaving techniques employed by indigenous peoples across Latin America as a means of advocating for the protection of these communities and the environment. Spin a Yarn casts light on the enduring significance of fiber arts in the modernist canon and the profound impact of indigenous and pre-Hispanic weaving traditions on the development of contemporary art. \nThis exhibition is curated by Estrellita Brodsky\, founder and director of ANOTHER SPACE\, New York\, with Raul Martinez.

In 1949\, Jerome Robbins joined the Company as Associate Artistic Director and\, with Balanchine and many guest choreographers\, created a varied repertory that grew each season. In 1964 NYCB moved to its current home at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater (formerly the New York State Theater)\, where it grew into one of the world’s great dance companies. Balanchine choreographed countless works and created a company of dancers known for their speed and musicality\, serving as Ballet Master of NYCB from its inception until his death\, in 1983. Following Balanchine’s death\, Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins were named Co-Ballet Masters in Chief\, and from 1990 until he retired in 2017\, Mr. Martins assumed sole responsibility for the Company’s artistic direction. SUMMARY:ROBERT GLASPER IN CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS $65-$165 ($58.50-$148.50 FOR MEMBERS)\nExperience it here first – just days before his Central Park Summer Stage appearance! Join us for an extraordinary evening at Guild Hall as we present a performance by the multi-award-winning artist Robert Glasper. Originating from Houston\, Texas\, Glasper seamlessly blends intricate\, mellow compositions with nuanced hip-hop undertones. Throughout his career\, Glasper has collaborated with many luminaries\, including H.E.R\, Snoop Dogg\, Dave Chappelle\, Chaka Khan\, and Questlove\, resulting in Grammy-winning albums. Don’t miss this concert event\, where Glasper’s innovative musical fusions promise to make this an unforgettable experience.\n \n\nBand Members: \n\nJahi Sundance – DJ\nBurniss Travis – Bass\nJustin Tyson – Drums\n\n\n\n\nRobert Glasper is the leader of a new sonic paradigm with a career that bridges musical and artistic genres. To date\, he boasts 5 Grammy wins and 12 nominations across 11 categories\, an Emmy Award for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary “13th” with Common and Karriem Riggins\, and a Peabody Award for his Composition of “Mr. Soul!”. His work and accolades bridge all aspects of the music business\, from live touring to film scoring\, composing and producing. \nEvolution is his hallmark. Glasper’s breakout crossover album Black Radio changed the face of the genre and set a new expectation for what popular music could be. The album won him the Grammy for best R&B album and established him as the musician of choice for some of the world’s most iconic artists; notably playing keys throughout Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly\, winning another Grammy for the elastic track “These Walls”. The ongoing Black Radio series has since become Glasper’s calling card\, upholding a place at the heart of a trailblazing community: from long-time sonic brothers Mos Def and Bilal\, to legends including Ledisi\, Lupe Fiasco\, Kanye West\, Jill\nScott\, and Erykah Badu. \nGlasper’s eternal pursuit to further his sound has been consistent in challenging and transforming his creative horizons across the board. Whether producing a remix album with Kaytranda or as a bandleader\, Robert consistently defies the limits of the genre. This is evident in a portfolio that ranges from his acoustic jazz trio; which simultaneously defies and elevates the traditional idiom by uniting it effortlessly with electronics from visionary DJ Jahi Sundance\, to August Greene; a collaboration with Common + Karriem Riggins\, to R+R=Now; a supergroup at the crossroads of hip-hop and Jazz. \nIn the last year alone\, Glasper has seen a staggering diversity of success. He released Black Radio III and Black Radio III Supreme Edition on Loma Vista Records; with features ranging from Jennifer Hudson\, Killer Mike\, and the late Mac Miller. On screen he created the original score for Run The World Season 2 and The Best Man television series. In July 2022 he was the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the first Blue Note Napa Valley Jazz Festival\, which brought to the stage a plethora of iconic artists; from Chaka Khan to Maxwell and Glasper’s Dinner Party project featuring Snoop Dogg. October 2022 sees him back in New York for his now-legendary month-long residency at the Blue Note NYC\, with the usual array of star-studded appearances from the likes of Dave Chappelle\, Chris Rock\, Questlove\, Alex Isley and Miguel joining him both on and off stage. \nWith boundless innovation and elite technique as his signature it’s no surprise that Glasper has an avalanche of accolades\, awards\, and achievements to his name – most recently being asked to play at the 2020 March On Washington with Derrick Hodge and funk legend\, Sir George Clinton. In August of 2020\, Robert released ‘Better Than Imagined’ which won the Grammy for Best R&B song in 2021; the first taste of his Black Radio 3 album. Featuring H.E.R and Meshell Ndegeocello\, the song advocates for Black love and the power\, and responsibility\, we have to improve our world; again demonstrating that\, above all\, Glasper is an artist at the heart of a moment – and a movement – to champion Black music\, Black people\, and the possibility of a better future. The hip-hop-head-nod ballad is a dedication to just that: the beauty and brilliance of a heritage that is as much Kendrick as it is Coltrane\, and which seeks to empower and uplift with every offering. Glasper later went on to win the Grammy for Best R&B Album for Black Radio 3 in 2023 \n\n\nGenres: \n\nHip Hop & Rnb\, Jazz-funk\, Jazz Fusion\, Hip Hop Fusion\n\n\n
