SUMMARY:Robert Longo: A History of the Present
DESCRIPTION:Robert Longo’s exhibition\, A History of the Present\, is a celebration of and a critical investigation into the span of American history bookended by Abstract Expressionism and the current moment in which we live. In two adjacent galleries Longo juxtaposes America’s past with its present through 17 monumental\, highly labor-intensive charcoal drawings that act as mirrors into history. \nThe exhibition begins with Longo’s Gang of Cosmos series–exquisitely rendered\, highly sensitized black and white translations in charcoal–based on prominent paintings from the American Abstract Expressionist movement. Many of the artists who made the works upon which these interpretations are made lived and worked in the East End of Long Island\, making the ubiquity of the local landscape’s presence in the abstractions at once mesmerizing and inevitable. \nConsidered the most advanced American art at the time\, Abstract Expressionism was championed for being monumental in scale\, romantic in mood\, expressive of freedom and uniquely American in spirit. These works embody America’s willful rise out of the ashes after the world tried to destroy itself during the Second World War. Longo’s personal fascination with this era is no coincidence: he was born around the beginning of it and bore witness to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy\, an event which took place as the Abstract Expressionist influence was beginning to wane. \nPictures in the second gallery comprise The Agency of Faith\, echoing our current state of affairs\, and posing questions about our national and environmental narratives. A massive wave drawing anchors the visual energy of the gallery and serves as a reminder of nature’s enigmatic\, unrelenting power. Longo’s connection to the ocean and surfing the East End goes back decades and inspired his creating the classic wave drawing–the largest wave Longo has made to date and specifically for this exhibition. A quiet wing of a fallen bird evinces nature’s vulnerability. Yet once the viewer encounters a drawing depicting a field of cotton alongside a drawing of a closely cropped Native American headdress\, the seeming innocuousness of the natural imagery begins to unravel to expose a more provocative narrative. Longo presents us with captivating images both of our American crimes and answered calls to action\, unleashing an urgency to acknowledge our shared burdens and therefore shared responsibilities. Longo’s signature\, velvety charcoal chiaroscuro activates the power of beauty\, seducing the viewer into a state of\, if not unadulterated optimism\, renewed faith in our agency to create possibilities for our future. \nClick HERE for full COVID-19 information to review prior to your visit. \n\nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS \nAugust 7\, 6-8PM: Meet Robert Longo in the Galleries\n\nAugust 17\, 7PM: Robert Longo and Shirin Neshat in Conversation \nArtists Robert Longo and Shirin Neshat will discuss process of visual artists making and directing films \nAugust 17\, 8:30PM: Screening of Johnny Mnemonic Introduced by Robert Longo \nNew Black & White conversion of the 1995 action drama starring Keanu Reeves \nAugust 31\, 7PM: Robert Longo Documentary Film by The Artist Profile Archive Followed by a Q&A with Robert Longo\, Filmmaker Sophie Chahinian\, and moderated by Christina Mossaides Strassfield \nSeptember 25\, 3PM: Gallery Tour with Christina Mossaides Strassfield

SUMMARY:Social Fabric: In the Public Square
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary artist Andrea Cote and choreographer Ann Robideaux will activate the Minikes Garden as a place to gather amid a video installation accompanied by live sound by Chris Jones\, and curated by Christina Mossiades Strassfield\, Museum Director and Chief Curator. \nThe project explores how we embody personal and communal movement languages\, through containment and connection in domestic and public spheres. The artists invited both professional dancers and recreational movers to explore movement inside six-foot square sheets delineated with geometric forms and cosmological patterns. As we occupy this present liminal zone\, the artists create a place for visitors to inhabit that is at once intimate and communal. \nReservations are not required. Simply drop in over the course of their time in the garden! \nThe eAT Coffee Bar will be open for drinks and refreshments!

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival: THE FIRST WAVE
DESCRIPTION:WORLD PREMIERE \nDocumentary Feature | 93 minutes \n2021 | English | USA \nOPENING NIGHT FILM \nWith exclusive access to one of New York’s hardest-hit hospital systems\, Oscar®-nominated and Emmy® Award-winning director Matthew Heineman (CARTEL LAND) spotlights the everyday heroes at the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic as they come together to fight one of the greatest threats the world has ever encountered. Leaving a devastating trail of death and despair\, this once-in-a-century pandemic changed the very fabric of daily life and exposed long-standing inequities in our society. The “first wave” of COVID-19 ravaged New York from March through June 2020. Employing his signature approach of character-driven cinema vérité\, Heineman documents those harrowing first four months\, embedding with a group of doctors\, nurses and patients on the frontlines as they all navigated the crisis. With each distinct storyline serving as a microcosm through which we can view the emotional and societal impacts of the pandemic\, THE FIRST WAVE is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival: THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Narrative Feature | 127 minutes \n2021 | Norwegian | Norway/France/Sweden/Denmark \nJulie (Renate Reinsve) is restlessly cycling through career paths\, relationships and the taxing realities of existence. Framed around Julie’s delightful indecisiveness\, we follow four years of ups and downs\, featuring two important relationships and a handful of what ifs. SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival: THE POWER OF THE DOG
DESCRIPTION:Narrative Feature | 127 minutes \n2021 | English | Australia/New Zealand \nSet in majestic rural Montana in the early 20th century\, Jane Campion’s highly anticipated new film follows the successful cattle-ranching Burbank brothers—brutal and beguiling Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and quiet and polite George (Jesse Plemons)—as they storm into the life of widowed innkeeper Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her dreamy\, sensitive son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). When George falls in love with Rose\, the full force of Phil’s charisma\, cruelty\, and internal torment is unleashed. With gorgeous visuals and brilliantly subversive performances\, this incendiary examination of masculinity gone awry once again proves Campion to be one of the best filmmakers of our time.

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival: THE ART OF MAKING IT
DESCRIPTION:WORLD PREMIERE \nDocumentary Feature | 95 minutes \n2021 | English | USA \nAgainst the backdrop of a culture in crisis\, documentary filmmaker and curator Kelcey Edwards follows a diverse cast of young artists at defining moments in their careers\, and explores whether the systems intended to nurture these up-and-coming creative talents are ultimately failing them instead. Simultaneously a powerful condemnation of the American art world and a love letter to those who strive to continue on in spite of extraordinary adversity\, THE ART OF MAKING IT asks the question: are we at risk of losing a new generation of creative voices\, or are we maybe on the verge of making art accessible to all?

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival: BERNSTEIN’S WALL
DESCRIPTION:Documentary Feature | 100 minutes \n2021 | English | USA \nDouglas Tirola’s thrilling documentary portrait of famed composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein expertly tells the story of an immigrant son who became a phenom as the visionary and exuberant conductor of the New York Philharmonic\, and\, then for decades\, the face of classical music for the nation. Bernstein joyfully responded to the clamor of his times\, matching his passion for music with an unyielding commitment to political engagement while\, as Tirola reveals\, wrestling with what he called “the demons” of his hidden sexuality. We see Bernstein as a tireless participant in the anti-war and civil rights movements and a factor in the de-escalation of tensions between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Incredibly\, Tirola uses Bernstein’s own voice almost exclusively to turn the maestro’s life story into a call to action for artists and the people who believe in the arts to create change in our society today\, with the goal of bringing freedom and respect to all people.

SUMMARY:Behind the Screen with Bel Canto Boot Camp: The Russian Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Come meet Bel Canto Boot Camp in person! In collaboration with Guild Hall of East Hampton\, BCBC explores this fall’s Met: Live in HD repertoire. Bel Canto Boot Camp aims to unite the rich traditions of the past with the exciting productions in today’s opera house. \n\n\nJoin BCBC co-founders Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff as they explore the rich tradition of Russian choral singing. In operas with political plots the chorus provides the social context in which the action takes place. Many voices together provide the voice of different nations\, peoples\, and social classes\, sometimes wanting different outcomes. The chorus paints the picture of what the people believe\, think\, and want. \n\n\nThis program is presented in tandem with The Met: Live in HD screening of Boris Gudonov (encore screening). A complimentary coffee from our eAT Coffee Bar will be available for all participants between the lecture and screening. \n\nGuests attending programs indoors in the John Drew Theater must show proof of full vaccination. SUMMARY:Astronomy in Ancient Egypt (Mapping the Stars)
DESCRIPTION:Hamptons Observatory and Guild Hall are pleased to bring you this free\, virtual presentation by Egyptologist\, Dr. Colleen Darnell\, who will discuss how astronomy influenced the belief system\, art and life in ancient Egypt. From the earliest religious compositions in ancient Egypt\, the Pyramid Texts\, stars were an important part of their funerary beliefs. Not only did the king desire to join the sun god in his daily rising and setting\, but he wanted to become one of the “imperishable ones\,” the circumpolar stars. Astronomical observation was an important part of time keeping as well\, with the heliacal rising of the star Sirius marking the beginning of the New Year. Drawings of constellations also form a part of the ceiling decoration of royal tombs of the New Kingdom. \nDr. Colleen Darnell is an Egyptologist who has published widely on pharaonic history\, religion\, and literature. Her most recent book\, The Ancient Egyptian Netherworld Books (co-authored with her husband\, John Darnell)\, was the first complete English translation of the hieroglyphic texts within the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. In Imagining the Past: Historical Fiction in New Kingdom Egypt\, Dr. Darnell identified four stories that belonged to a genre of historical fiction written by the ancient Egyptians themselves. In 2013\, she curated an exhibit at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History\, Echoes of Egypt: Conjuring the Land of the Pharaohs\, that examined Egyptian motifs from antiquity to the present. \nRegistration is required for this free virtual event. Click HERE. \nHamptons Observatory would like to thank Dr. Darnell for generously taking the time to share her expertise\, and Guild Hall for its kind collaboration. \nHamptonsObservatory (HO)\, a 501(c)(3) NYS nonprofit that relies on public support has served the South Fork since 2005. Its mission: to foster interest in science\, particularly astronomy\, through educational programs. Lectures\, star parties\, portable planetarium shows and other events are held throughout the South Fork\, often in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations. HOhas established the first astronomical observatory on the South Fork (on the campus of the Ross School in East Hampton)\, complete with Long Island’s largest research-grade telescope; these facilities will soon be accessible over the internet to students\, teachers\, researchers and the general public. HamptonsObservatory offers all of its programs free-of-charge to encourage participation regardless of economic status. To make a tax-deductible donation to support our mission\, please go to www.HamptonsObservatory.org and click on Donations. To join HO’s list for event notices\, email HamptonsObservatory@gmail.com.
