SUMMARY:Robert Longo: A History of the Present
DESCRIPTION:Robert Longo’s exhibition\, A History of the Present\, is a celebration of and a critical investigation into the span of American history bookended by Abstract Expressionism and the current moment in which we live. In two adjacent galleries Longo juxtaposes America’s past with its present through 17 monumental\, highly labor-intensive charcoal drawings that act as mirrors into history. \nThe exhibition begins with Longo’s Gang of Cosmos series–exquisitely rendered\, highly sensitized black and white translations in charcoal–based on prominent paintings from the American Abstract Expressionist movement. Many of the artists who made the works upon which these interpretations are made lived and worked in the East End of Long Island\, making the ubiquity of the local landscape’s presence in the abstractions at once mesmerizing and inevitable. \nConsidered the most advanced American art at the time\, Abstract Expressionism was championed for being monumental in scale\, romantic in mood\, expressive of freedom and uniquely American in spirit. These works embody America’s willful rise out of the ashes after the world tried to destroy itself during the Second World War. Longo’s personal fascination with this era is no coincidence: he was born around the beginning of it and bore witness to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy\, an event which took place as the Abstract Expressionist influence was beginning to wane. \nPictures in the second gallery comprise The Agency of Faith\, echoing our current state of affairs\, and posing questions about our national and environmental narratives. A massive wave drawing anchors the visual energy of the gallery and serves as a reminder of nature’s enigmatic\, unrelenting power. Longo’s connection to the ocean and surfing the East End goes back decades and inspired his creating the classic wave drawing–the largest wave Longo has made to date and specifically for this exhibition. A quiet wing of a fallen bird evinces nature’s vulnerability. Yet once the viewer encounters a drawing depicting a field of cotton alongside a drawing of a closely cropped Native American headdress\, the seeming innocuousness of the natural imagery begins to unravel to expose a more provocative narrative. Longo presents us with captivating images both of our American crimes and answered calls to action\, unleashing an urgency to acknowledge our shared burdens and therefore shared responsibilities. Longo’s signature\, velvety charcoal chiaroscuro activates the power of beauty\, seducing the viewer into a state of\, if not unadulterated optimism\, renewed faith in our agency to create possibilities for our future. \nClick HERE for full COVID-19 information to review prior to your visit. \n\nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS \nAugust 7\, 6-8PM: Meet Robert Longo in the Galleries\n\nAugust 17\, 7PM: Robert Longo and Shirin Neshat in Conversation \nArtists Robert Longo and Shirin Neshat will discuss process of visual artists making and directing films \nAugust 17\, 8:30PM: Screening of Johnny Mnemonic Introduced by Robert Longo \nNew Black & White conversion of the 1995 action drama starring Keanu Reeves \nAugust 31\, 7PM: Robert Longo Documentary Film by The Artist Profile Archive Followed by a Q&A with Robert Longo\, Filmmaker Sophie Chahinian\, and moderated by Christina Mossaides Strassfield \nSeptember 25\, 3PM: Gallery Tour with Christina Mossaides Strassfield

SUMMARY:New Light Theater Project’s Production of Hitler’s Tasters by Michelle Kholos Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Members click HERE for discounted tickets! \nAn Award-Winning Play by Michelle Kholos Brooks \nDirected by Sarah Norris \nFeaturing Hallie Griffin\, MaryKathryn Kopp\, Kaitlin Paige Longoria\, and Hannah Mae Sturges \nInspired by true events. \nJust because you align yourself with a dictator doesn’t mean you get a pass. It’s Germany in 1943 and three times a day\, every day\, a group of young German women have the opportunity to die for their country. They are Adolf Hitler’s food tasters. And what do girls discuss as they wait to see if they will live through another meal? Like all girls\, throughout time\, they gossip and dream\, they question and dance. They want to love\, laugh\, and above all they want to survive. \nHistory has revealed that Margot Woelk was a German secretary who\, among 15 young women in 1942\, were selected to taste German leader Adolf Hitler’s food at the Wolf’s Lair in East Prussia for two-and-a-half years in order to confirm that it was safe to eat. She was the only one of the 15 to survive World War II\, and her background as Hitler’s food taster was not revealed until a newspaper interview on her 95th birthday in December 2012. SUMMARY:THE TILE CLUB: Open Studio Painting Workshop with Artist Scott Bluedorn
DESCRIPTION:Community Artist-In-Residence Scott Bluedorn will lead a series of open studio painting workshops in Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden as a part of his residency project.  Scott’s project is focused on the history\, practice\, and revitalization of “The Tile Club;” a group of artists from the late 19th century\, who met and painted on decorative tiles\, often en plein air\, on the Eastern End of Long Island. \nScott will host these open studios once a month during the extended Museum hours on Saturdays in June\, July and August. During these free workshops our concessions will be open and artists will paint on tiles provided by Guild Hall and are asked to bring their own acrylic paints\, brushes\, water jar\, and palette. We ask that each participant gives at least one tile to Guild Hall to be included in a final installation culminating this project in the Fall of 2021. \nThis program will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather. Face coverings and social distancing will be required indoors.

SUMMARY:A World Within a World: The Bay Houses of Long Island
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Barbara Weber\, A World Within a World: The Bay Houses of Long Island (2020\, 58 min.) explores the symbiotic relationship between nature and mankind.  Focusing on the South Shore bay homes of Hempstead\, Long Island\, Weber captures the perseverance and dedication of generational bay homeowners. Preserving century long traditions\, battling eroding marshlands\, and enduring hurricane strength storms are just some of the many tribulations these families face. \nA resident of Long Beach\, NY\, Barbara would notice the bay houses as she periodically drove over the Loop Parkway from where several bay houses can be seen. For years she had been very curious about these other worldly structures that looked as if they were built during a much earlier time. It wasn’t until she came upon a sign within the Lido Beach Nature Preserve that she learned that these were called bay houses.  \n“I was so excited and felt compelled to tell this story\,” says Barbara Weber. “I couldn’t believe that there wasn’t a documentary on them. Having scored the soundtrack for over 33 films\, basically you are a storyteller yourself. I knew I had what it took to put this film together. I then found Nancy Solomon\, the director of Long Island Traditions who wrote a book about the bay houses; now in its second edition. Nancy was able to secure the bulk of funding for this project and bring me and my crew into the bay house world.” \nThe Film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Guild Hall Executive Director Andrea Grover with Director Barbara Weber\, Nancy Solomon\, the Director of Long Island Traditions\, artist Daniel Pollera. \nClick HERE to view the film’s trailer. \n\nTHIS PROGRAM WILL TAKE PLACE INDOORS IN THE JOHN DREW THEATER. Guests attending any INDOOR John Drew Theater programs must show proof of FULL vaccination. At this time\, only fully vaccinated guests are permitted to attend programs in the indoor theater.  Face coverings are required indoors for all guests over the age of two\, regardless of vaccinated status. \nClick HERE for full COVID-19 information to review prior to your visit.

SUMMARY:Apex Ape
DESCRIPTION:Apex Ape is an experimental film\, and original creature that explores the changing American image through the lens of local legend. Inspired by interviews with East End residents and video archives from LTV\, Apex Ape examines societal decay through impressionistic cinematography\, treating our familiar landscape as a living organism. As viewers are confronted with the husks of our past\, they may even catch sight of the illusive Ape\, a cryptid-inspired manifestation of those left behind in a rapidly changing habitat. \nApex Ape was created as part of Guild Hall’s 2021Community Artist-in-Residence program. The film will be installed as a multi-channel video installation in our Minikes Garden\, allowing the public to enter the film at any time throughout the evening.
