SUMMARY:Robert Longo: A History of the Present
DESCRIPTION:Robert Longo’s exhibition\, A History of the Present\, is a celebration of and a critical investigation into the span of American history bookended by Abstract Expressionism and the current moment in which we live. In two adjacent galleries Longo juxtaposes America’s past with its present through 17 monumental\, highly labor-intensive charcoal drawings that act as mirrors into history. \nThe exhibition begins with Longo’s Gang of Cosmos series–exquisitely rendered\, highly sensitized black and white translations in charcoal–based on prominent paintings from the American Abstract Expressionist movement. Many of the artists who made the works upon which these interpretations are made lived and worked in the East End of Long Island\, making the ubiquity of the local landscape’s presence in the abstractions at once mesmerizing and inevitable. \nConsidered the most advanced American art at the time\, Abstract Expressionism was championed for being monumental in scale\, romantic in mood\, expressive of freedom and uniquely American in spirit. These works embody America’s willful rise out of the ashes after the world tried to destroy itself during the Second World War. Longo’s personal fascination with this era is no coincidence: he was born around the beginning of it and bore witness to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy\, an event which took place as the Abstract Expressionist influence was beginning to wane. \nPictures in the second gallery comprise The Agency of Faith\, echoing our current state of affairs\, and posing questions about our national and environmental narratives. A massive wave drawing anchors the visual energy of the gallery and serves as a reminder of nature’s enigmatic\, unrelenting power. Longo’s connection to the ocean and surfing the East End goes back decades and inspired his creating the classic wave drawing–the largest wave Longo has made to date and specifically for this exhibition. A quiet wing of a fallen bird evinces nature’s vulnerability. Yet once the viewer encounters a drawing depicting a field of cotton alongside a drawing of a closely cropped Native American headdress\, the seeming innocuousness of the natural imagery begins to unravel to expose a more provocative narrative. Longo presents us with captivating images both of our American crimes and answered calls to action\, unleashing an urgency to acknowledge our shared burdens and therefore shared responsibilities. Longo’s signature\, velvety charcoal chiaroscuro activates the power of beauty\, seducing the viewer into a state of\, if not unadulterated optimism\, renewed faith in our agency to create possibilities for our future. \nClick HERE for full COVID-19 information to review prior to your visit. \n\nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS \nAugust 7\, 6-8PM: Meet Robert Longo in the Galleries\n\nAugust 17\, 7PM: Robert Longo and Shirin Neshat in Conversation \nArtists Robert Longo and Shirin Neshat will discuss process of visual artists making and directing films \nAugust 17\, 8:30PM: Screening of Johnny Mnemonic Introduced by Robert Longo \nNew Black & White conversion of the 1995 action drama starring Keanu Reeves \nAugust 31\, 7PM: Robert Longo Documentary Film by The Artist Profile Archive Followed by a Q&A with Robert Longo\, Filmmaker Sophie Chahinian\, and moderated by Christina Mossaides Strassfield \nSeptember 25\, 3PM: Gallery Tour with Christina Mossaides Strassfield

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Sacred Land - Israel Before and After Time with Ralph Gibson and Marty Cohen
DESCRIPTION:THIS PROGRAM WILL NOW TAKE PLACE INDOORS IN THE JOHN DREW THEATER. Guests attending any INDOOR John Drew Theater programs must show proof of FULL vaccination. At this time\, only fully vaccinated guests are permitted to attend programs in the indoor theater. Face coverings are recommended but not required. \nClick HERE for full COVID-19 information to review prior to your visit. \n\nModerated by Rabbi Daniel Geffen \nRalph Gibson and Marty Cohen in conversation on their new book\, Sacred Land – Israel Before and After Time. Photographer Ralph Gibson traveled throughout Israel and the surrounding region to create a portrait of a land where the past is vividly part of the present. He contrasts these in two-page spreads in which color and black-and-white images face one another: ancient language in a visual dialogue with contemporary human experience.

SUMMARY:Edward Albee’s At Home At The Zoo starring Michael Urie*\, Ryan Spahn*\, and Sophie von Haselberg*
DESCRIPTION:Members click HERE for Discounted tickets! \n\nDirected by Nathan Winkelstein \nWritten in just three weeks and initially rejected by American producers\, Edward Albee’s first play The Zoo Story offers a profound perspective on isolation and humanity’s fundamental need to connect. Peter-an unassuming and successful publishing executive is reading a book\, on a bench\, in Central Park when he is approached by the enigmatic Jerry. Rather than pushing one another away these two strangers have a profound\, and life changing moment of connection. Albee’s boundary-pushing play gains new and deeper resonance in our current world of self isolation and personal discovery. At Home at the Zoo (The Zoo Story) stars Michael Urie (Ugly Betty\, Torch Song Trilogy) as Jerry and Ryan Spahn (Daniel’s Husband\, Moscow x6\, Gloria) as Peter\, and Sophie von Haselberg as Ann. Originally titled Peter & Jerry\, At Home at the Zoo combines The Zoo Story (1959) with its prequel\, Homelife (2004). Together these short plays form a complete story of Peter\, a publishing executive; Ann\, his wife; and Jerry\, a stranger Peter meets in the park. \nAn interesting note in honor of Guild Hall’s 90th Anniversary – Albee\, a longtime fixture on the East End\, was among the earliest members of our Academy of the Arts and received an Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. He also served one season as the Artistic Director of Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater. \nRun time: Approx. 2 hours including intermission \nStage Manager: Amanda Joshi* \nAt Home at the Zoo (The Zoo Story) is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French\, Inc.\nwww.concordtheatricals.com \n*Members of Actors Equity Association \n\nTHIS PROGRAM WILL NOW TAKE PLACE INDOORS IN THE JOHN DREW THEATER. SUMMARY:Saturday Family Workshop: Grayscale Drip Painting with the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center
DESCRIPTION:Guild Hall’s Saturday Family workshops are the perfect way for families to take part in shared learning and creativity. Each session allows families\, ages 4+\, to explore and reflect on the works exhibited in Guild Hall’s Museum as they create unique works of their own. \nFrom reimagining famed abstract expressionist works to experimenting with charcoals\, each Saturday Family Workshop provides a new viewpoint and level of engagement to the current exhibition\, Robert Longo: A History of the Present. Workshops are led by a rotating team of locally based educators and artists\, embracing the diversity and artist colony of the Hamptons. \nA single registration is for families of no more than four people. \nSCHEDULE\nSaturday August 14: Painting with the Whole Body with Virva Hinnemo\nSaturday August 21: Grayscale Drip Painting with the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center\nSaturday August 28: Create Your Own Rothko with Anna Healy\nSaturday September 4: Charcoal Drawing with Elizabeth Karsch \n\n\nThe Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center is a National Historic Landmark\, a federal designation that recognizes its significance as one of the nation’s most important cultural monuments. It is also a member of the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program. Built in 1879\, the house is typical of the 19th century farmers’ and fishermen’s homes in Springs\, a hamlet in the Town of East Hampton. Pollock and Krasner made many changes to the building after moving there. It contains all the furnishings and artifacts that were in the house at the time of Krasner’s death in 1984\, some of which were there during Pollock’s lifetime\, including his hi-fi phonograph\, his jazz record collection\, and the artists’ personal library. An original late 1930s painting by Pollock\, Composition with Red Arc and Horses\, and prints by both artists are on display. The house also features changing exhibitions of artwork related to the Study Center’s mission.
