SUMMARY:Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks
DESCRIPTION:Guild Hall is proud to present Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks. This exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by American artist Alexis Rockman looks at the world’s waterways as a network by which all of history has traveled. The transport of language\, culture\, art\, architecture\, cuisine\, religion\, disease\, and warfare can be traced along the routes of seafaring vessels dating back to and in some cases predating the earliest recorded civilizations. Through depictions of historic and imagined shipwrecks and their lost cargoes\, Alexis Rockman addresses the impact—both factual and extrapolated—that the migration of material culture\, people\, plants\, and animals has on the planet. The artist’s virtuosity with paint and his appreciation for the marine landscape genre connect this body of work to maritime art history and its abundant sociological themes. This timely exhibition is propelled by impending climate disaster and the current largest human migration in history\, which is taking place in part by water. \nAn excellent platform for the discussion of the 2020 global pandemic\, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks examines the long history leading up to globalization\, including the exploitation of humans\, animals\, and natural resources\, and the ways in which all parts of the planet are now inextricably connected. \nInclusive of non-Western depictions of waterborne vessels and journeys\, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks departs from traditional euro-centric maritime images associated with the Age of Exploration and embraces other periods and global regions that contributed to the history of seafaring. \nCurator\nAndrea Grover\, Executive Director of Guild Hall \n\n\n\nMarch 6 to May 31\, 2021: Peabody Essex Museum\, Salem\, MA \nJune 12 to July 26\, 2021: Guild Hall\, East Hampton\, NY \nPer CDC and state guidelines\, people who are not fully vaccinated must continue to wear face coverings while indoors.

SUMMARY:Aurelio Torres: Valparaíso\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:A Guild Hall Education Initiative \nValparaíso by Aurelio Torres is on view in the Minikes Garden\, June 13–July 5\, during Museum hours. \nFor the first Guild Hall After Hours immersive event\, Artist\, Aurelio Torres\, brought us a new participatory installation allowing visitors to contribute in the creation of one of his largescale sculptures. The sculpture\, Valparaíso\, is reflective of Aurelio’s larger body of work which references ships\, sailboats\, and other maritime symbols. Chosen as a complement to the exhibition within the museum galleries\, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks\, Aurelio’s piece is made up of 4 main ‘totems’ or ‘masts’ with attached abstract hull-shaped elements consisting of repurposed building materials. The sculpture was located at the front of Guild Hall during the After Hours event on June 12\, where patrons were invited to contribute by creating and attaching a message-in-a-bottle. The bottles consisted of recycled water bottles\, wine corks\, and a piece of brightly colored fabric. Visitors were prompted to write or illustrate a response to the question: If you could tell the plastics industry something what would it be? The assembled bottle was then attached with twine to the rope system of the sculpture. \nThe sculpture will be on view in Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden\, just off of Dunemere Lane\, from June 13–July 5 during Museum hours. Enjoy refreshments from our newly expanded eAT Coffee Bar while you sit and view the installation.

SUMMARY:Moments Choisis by Josephine Meckseper
DESCRIPTION:Guild Hall and the Elaine de Kooning House are pleased to present a new digital film series by Josephine Meckseper\, entitled Moments Choisis. \nDuring her residency at the Elaine de Kooning House\, Meckseper will share weekly three to five-minutes film clips — produced and edited by the artist — chronicling the non-linear process of her new works in the studio. The studio’s architecture will be featured in various cinematic modes with layered shots of the artist’s works in progress and the surrounding landscape. The short films will create a unique view of her residency as well as the space and its history. \nEach new installment from the film series will become available for viewing on guildhall.org at 12PM EST on Tuesdays\, June 22\, June 29\, July 6\, July 13\, July 20. \nMeckseper’s large-scale installations and films have been exhibited in numerous international biennials and museum shows worldwide\, including solo-exhibitions at: Frac des Pays de la Loire\, Nantes\, France (2019); MOSTYN Contemporary Art Gallery\, Wales (2018); Neuer Aachener Kunstverein\, Aachen\, Germany (2014); Kunsthalle Münster\, Germany (2009); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst\, Zurich (2009); and Museum of Modern Art\, New York (2008). Her works are in the permanent collections of numerous institutions\, including the Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, the Metropolitan Museum\, New York\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, and the Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles. The artist lives and works in New York. \nConcurrent with the inclusion of her film Mall of America\, 2010 in the Whitney Biennial\, she was commissioned to create a short film (Amalgamated\, 2010) for the museum’s website featuring the museum’s Marcel Breuer architecture. In 2013\, Andrea Grover organized Josephine Meckseper: Platform at The Parrish Art Museum in Watermill\, NY. The exhibition challenged traditional disciplinary boundaries by utilizing the entire Museum as a “canvas.” \n \n \n \n \n \nAbout Josephine Meckseper \n \nJosephine Meckseper\, born in Lilienthal\, Germany\, lives and works in New York. She received her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts\, Los Angeles. Her large-scale installations\, vitrines and films create a window into the collective unconscious of our time. Meckseper’s recent narrative movie Pellea[s]\, 2018 includes footage of the historical event of the 45th Presidential Inauguration and concurrent protests filmed\nby the artist. The artist’s first public project in New York\, Manhattan Oil Project\, commissioned by Art Production Fund was installed adjacent to Times Square in 2012. Meckseper’s works have been exhibited in numerous international solo museum shows worldwide\, including her most recent survey exhibition at the Frac des Pays de la Loire (2019); and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein\, Aachen\, Germany\n(2014); The Parrish Art Museum\, Water Mill\, NY (2013); Kunsthalle Münster\, Germany (2009); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst\, Zurich (2009); and Museum of Modern Art\, (with Mikhael Subotzky) New York (2008). Her work was included in numerous biennales\, such as the Taipei Biennial 2014\, Taiwan\, curated by Nicolas Bourriaud (2014); Sharjah Biennial\, United Arab Emirates\, curated by Suzanne\nCotter (2011); Whitney Biennale 2010\, New York\, curated by Francesco Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari (2010); the 2nd International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville\, Spain\, curated by Okwui Enwezor (2006); Whitney Biennial 2006\, New York\, curated by Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne. Her works are in the permanent collections of many major institutions\, including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, the Metropolitan Museum\, New York and the Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles. \nElaine de Kooning House\nIn 1975\, Elaine de Kooning reconciled with her husband Willem and purchased a house on Alewive Brook Road. She added the studio three years later and created her last important bodies of work — the Cave Walls and Cave Paintings (1985-88). She also painted the portrait of the Brazilian soccer player Pele\, Motown mogul Berry Gordy\, and many others at this time. After her death\, the sculptor John Chamberlain owned the property\, followed by the painter Richmond Burton. \nSince 2011\, the Elaine de Kooning House has hosted events\, exhibitions\, and informal artist residencies with the artists Charles Andresen\, Aaron Aujla\, Katherine Bernhardt\, Lizzi Bougatsos\, Joe Bradley\, Jessie Dunahoo\, Chris Duncan\, Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe\, Mike Goodlett\, Eric Haze\, Lonnie Holley\, Sedrick Huckaby\, Kim “Mudman” Jones\, Susan Te Kahurangi King\, Laura and Rachel Lancaster\, Sadie Laska\, Jose Lerma\, Liz Markus\, Adam Marnie\, Katherine McMahon\, Scott and Tyson Reeder\, John Riepenhoff\, Kambel Smith\, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer\, Jerry “The Marble Faun” Torre\, Michael Williams\, and Anke Weyer.

Einstein was the genius of the revolution in physics\, and Steve Jobs was the genius of the revolution in digital technology. We are now on the cusp of a third revolution in science\, a revolution in biochemistry that is capable of curing diseases\, fending off viruses\, and improving the human species itself. The genius at the center of his newest book\, The Code Breaker (available on March 9\, 2021)\, is American biochemist Jennifer Doudna (pronounced DOWD-nuh)\, who is considered one of the prime inventors of CRISPR\, a system that can edit DNA. \nDoudna’s story begins when she was a sixth-grader in Hilo\, Hawaii\, and she came home from school one afternoon to find a book on her bed. It was The Double Helix\, James Watson’s account of how he and Francis Crick had discovered the structure of DNA\, the spiral-staircase molecule that carries the genetic instruction code for all forms of life. Doudna put the book aside\, thinking it was a detective tale. When she read it\, she discovered that she was right\, in a way. As she sped through the pages\, she became enthralled by the race to put together clues\, both in competition and cooperation with other scientists\, that culminated in the 1953 discovery of the building block of life. Even though her high school counselor told her girls didn’t become scientists\, she decided she would. \nThe structure of DNA was the 20th century discovery that would have the most effect on the 21st. But at first its impact was somewhat underwhelming. Beginning in 2006\, Jennifer Doudna helped change that. Her studies focused not on DNA\, a field dominated by men\, but on what seemed more of a backwater in biochemistry: figuring out the shapes and structure of RNA\, a closely related molecule that enables the genetic instructions coded in DNA to express themselves by directing the creation of protein for new cells. \nDriven by a passion to understand how nature works and to turn discoveries into inventions\, she would help to make what James Watson told her was the most important biological advance since his co-discovery of the structure of DNA. She and her collaborators turned their curiosity into an invention that would transform the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as CRISPR\, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions \n“This year’s prize is about rewriting the code of life\,” the secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy proclaimed in announcing that Doudna and her collaborator\, Emmanuelle Charpentier\, had won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. “These genetic scissors have taken the life sciences into a new epoch.” \nThe Moral Dilemma\nWith The Code Breaker\, Isaacson shows what it took for Doudna to defy the odds as woman in a male-dominated field. His gripping narrative twists and turns through the risks she took\, the rules she broke\, the alliances she formed\, the competition she bested\, and the moral dilemmas she faced along the way. After helping to discover CRISPR in 2012\, Doudna became a leader in wrestling with the ethical implications of this invention and helping set up the guardrails we are going to need as a civilization.  \nBecause at the core of this book is a moral dilemma: Should we use our new evolution-hacking powers to eliminate dreaded disorders like Tay-Sachs and sickle cell anemia? Should we edit our genes to make us less susceptible to deadly viruses? And what about preventing congenital deafness and blindness? Or being very short? Or being depressed? Should we allow parents to enhance the IQ or memory or muscles of their kids? Our newfound ability raises some uncomfortable questions about what might that do to the diversity of our societies. If these offerings at the genetic supermarket aren’t free (and they won’t be)\, will that greatly increase inequality—and indeed encode it permanently in the human race? \nIn 2018\, the world’s first “designer babies” were engineered and born: twin girls in China with genes that had been edited with CRISPR to make them immune to the virus that causes AIDS. There was an immediate outcry of shock and awe. After three billion years of evolution\, one species (us) had developed the talent and temerity to grab control of its own genetic future. There was a sense that we had crossed the threshold into a whole new era\, like when Adam and Eve bit into the apple or when Prometheus snatched fire from the gods. \nDoudna has been at the forefront of scientists who are grappling publicly with these moral issues. At one point when she was developing CRISPR\, Doudna had a nightmare in which she was summoned to meet a powerful client who wanted to learn how it worked. When the client looked up\, it was Adolf Hitler. That spurred her to become a key organizer of groups that are trying to find a path forward that allows CRISPR to fulfill its promising potential while preventing it from being misused. \nThe Coronavirus Vaccine\nMost recently\, however\, Doudna and the other pioneers of CRISPR have been deployed in the war against our most immediate threat—the coronavirus—and Isaacson brings readers up-to-the-moment reporting on that fight. The gene-editing tool that Doudna and others developed in 2012 is based on a virus-fighting trick used by bacteria\, which have been battling viruses for about three billion years. CRISPR systems allow bacteria to remember and then destroy deadly viruses. In other words\, it’s an adaptive immune system against viruses—just what we humans need in an era that has been plagued by repeated waves of viral epidemics. \nFrom the moment COVID-19 emerged\, catching the federal government flatfooted\, Doudna recast her team’s gene-editing system to develop a scalable and reliable test for the virus\, with the eventual bigger goal of making us invulnerable to the future ones coming our way. Up until COVID-19\, Doudna and her rivals were elbowing each other out of the way to get ahead in the race for CRISPR and other big discoveries. But when the pandemic hit\, they put their competition aside and locked arms in the race to save lives. CRISPR has since enabled new forms of testing and treatments\, and it has helped with the creation of an easily reprogrammable vaccine that can quickly be tailored to any new virus that comes along. \nThe Code Breaker tells Jennifer Doudna’s story\, a thrilling scientific tale that involves the most profound wonders of nature\, from the origins of life to the future of our species and carries the urgency of meeting the crisis we face today. As Isaacson writes\, “the development of CRISPR and the race to fight coronaviruses will hasten our transition to the next great innovation revolution: a life-science revolution. Children who study digital coding will be joined by those who study the code of life.” \nAn audience Q&A will follow. \nRun time: Approx 1 hour

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Thicker Than Water with Erica Cirino
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE for full COVID-19 information to review prior to your visit. \n\nScience Writer and Artist\, Erica Cirino speaks about her research and upcoming book\, Thicker Than Water: The Quest for Solutions to the Plastic Crisis and her recent project with the Bridgehampton Childcare & Recreation Center on view in Guild Hall’s Education Corridor. \nThis talk is programmed as part of the July 15 Guild Hall After Hours. \nAppealing to readers of Carl Safina and Elizabeth Kolbert\, Erica Cirino’s Thicker Than Water is a riveting nonfiction debut that takes you to the front lines of Earth’s plastic pollution crisis! \nPlastic is everywhere—it’s in our food containers\, keyboards\, glasses\, even our toothbrushes. It’s lightweight\, versatile\, and so cheap that we often forget how much it permeates our lives. But our relationship with plastic is not a healthy one\, and our worldwide reliance on it is affecting our planet. The oceans swirl with plastic detritus; scientists have discovered dead whales with stomachs filled with plastic bags\, seabirds eating plastic lights\, and turtles suffocating on plastic straws stuck in their nostrils. Less obvious\, but potentially just as deadly\, are the plastics that break down in the ocean into small particles over time\, called microplastics. These tiny pieces contain toxic chemicals that are released into the bodies of wild animals and travel up the food chain into fish and other creatures\, eventually making their way onto our plates and into our stomachs. \nThicker Than Water charters a course through some of the key sites in the fight against plastic pollution—from the ocean currents dotted with trillions of tiny plastic pieces to research centers across the globe working on plastic alternatives. Readers will be exposed to the shocking extent of plastic contamination in our environment and ecosystems\, but will also be introduced to the scientists\, advocates\, innovators\, and ordinary citizens who are trying to solve the problem.

SUMMARY:THE TILE CLUB: Open Studio Painting Workshop with Artist Scott Bluedorn
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, June 19\, July 17\, and August 21 from 5-7pm \nCommunity Artist-In-Residence Scott Bluedorn will lead a series of open studio painting workshops in Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden as a part of his residency project.  Scott’s project is focused on the history\, practice\, and revitalization of “The Tile Club;” a group of artists from the late 19th century\, who met and painted on decorative tiles\, often en plein air\, on the Eastern End of Long Island. \nScott will host these open studios once a month during the extended Museum hours on Saturdays in June\, July and August. During these free workshops our concessions will be open and artists will paint on tiles provided by Guild Hall and are asked to bring their own acrylic paints\, brushes\, water jar\, and palette. We ask that each participant gives at least one tile to Guild Hall to be included in a final installation culminating this project in the Fall of 2021. \nThis program will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather. Face coverings and social distancing will be required indoors.
