We are delighted to present this mini-fest of Wendy’s plays – two separate\, distinctive evenings filled with smart and shining treats from the voice of one of America’s most beloved playwrights\, and a great friend and neighbor to Guild Hall. \nThe plot of THE HEIDI CHRONICLES follows Heidi Holland from high school in the 1960s to her career as a successful art historian more than twenty years later. The play’s main themes deal with the changing role of women during this time period\, describing both Heidi’s ardent feminism during the 1970s and her eventual sense of betrayal during the 1980s. \nThough most of the characters are women\, there are two important male characters; Peter Patrone\, a gay pediatrician who is arguably Heidi’s best friend\, and Scoop Rosenbaum\, a magazine editor who marries and has many affairs\, and with whom Heidi has a tense friendship. Heidi meets Scoop at a Eugene McCarthy rally where he tries to woo her with knowledge and wit. She seems unenthused\, but she realizes Scoop is a very intelligent\, attractive man despite his egotistical ways. Although their romantic relationship is unsuccessful\, the chemistry between Scoop and Heidi is insatiable\, and they become lifelong friends. \nHeidi realizes that remaining unmarried does not mean she cannot be a mother\, and she chooses to adopt a child on her own. \nTHE HEIDI CHRONICLES won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as Tony\, Drama Desk and NY Drama Critic’s Circle Awards for Best New Play. \nRun time: Approx. 90 minutes \nJune 4th will feature an evening of 6 short plays with music – Bette and Me\, Tender Offer\, Workout\, Medea\, Boy Meets Girl\, and The Man in a Case. \n\n*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING PROGRAMS INDOORS IN THE JOHN DREW THEATER \nGuests attending any indoor John Drew Theater program must show proof of full vaccination. SUMMARY:Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks
DESCRIPTION:Guild Hall is proud to present Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks. This exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by American artist Alexis Rockman looks at the world’s waterways as a network by which all of history has traveled. The transport of language\, culture\, art\, architecture\, cuisine\, religion\, disease\, and warfare can be traced along the routes of seafaring vessels dating back to and in some cases predating the earliest recorded civilizations. Through depictions of historic and imagined shipwrecks and their lost cargoes\, Alexis Rockman addresses the impact—both factual and extrapolated—that the migration of material culture\, people\, plants\, and animals has on the planet. The artist’s virtuosity with paint and his appreciation for the marine landscape genre connect this body of work to maritime art history and its abundant sociological themes. This timely exhibition is propelled by impending climate disaster and the current largest human migration in history\, which is taking place in part by water. \nAn excellent platform for the discussion of the 2020 global pandemic\, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks examines the long history leading up to globalization\, including the exploitation of humans\, animals\, and natural resources\, and the ways in which all parts of the planet are now inextricably connected. \nInclusive of non-Western depictions of waterborne vessels and journeys\, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks departs from traditional euro-centric maritime images associated with the Age of Exploration and embraces other periods and global regions that contributed to the history of seafaring. \nCurator\nAndrea Grover\, Executive Director of Guild Hall \n\n\n\nMarch 6 to May 31\, 2021: Peabody Essex Museum\, Salem\, MA \nJune 12 to July 26\, 2021: Guild Hall\, East Hampton\, NY \nPer CDC and state guidelines\, people who are not fully vaccinated must continue to wear face coverings while indoors.

SUMMARY:Aurelio Torres: Valparaíso\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:A Guild Hall Education Initiative \nValparaíso by Aurelio Torres is on view in the Minikes Garden\, June 13–July 5\, during Museum hours. \nFor the first Guild Hall After Hours immersive event\, Artist\, Aurelio Torres\, brought us a new participatory installation allowing visitors to contribute in the creation of one of his largescale sculptures. The sculpture\, Valparaíso\, is reflective of Aurelio’s larger body of work which references ships\, sailboats\, and other maritime symbols. Chosen as a complement to the exhibition within the museum galleries\, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks\, Aurelio’s piece is made up of 4 main ‘totems’ or ‘masts’ with attached abstract hull-shaped elements consisting of repurposed building materials. The sculpture was located at the front of Guild Hall during the After Hours event on June 12\, where patrons were invited to contribute by creating and attaching a message-in-a-bottle. The bottles consisted of recycled water bottles\, wine corks\, and a piece of brightly colored fabric. Visitors were prompted to write or illustrate a response to the question: If you could tell the plastics industry something what would it be? The assembled bottle was then attached with twine to the rope system of the sculpture. \nThe sculpture will be on view in Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden\, just off of Dunemere Lane\, from June 13–July 5 during Museum hours. Enjoy refreshments from our newly expanded eAT Coffee Bar while you sit and view the installation.

SUMMARY:THE TILE CLUB: Open Studio Painting Workshop with Artist Scott Bluedorn
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, June 19\, July 17\, and August 21 from 5-7pm \nCommunity Artist-In-Residence Scott Bluedorn will lead a series of open studio painting workshops in Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden as a part of his residency project.  Scott’s project is focused on the history\, practice\, and revitalization of “The Tile Club;” a group of artists from the late 19th century\, who met and painted on decorative tiles\, often en plein air\, on the Eastern End of Long Island. \nScott will host these open studios once a month during the extended Museum hours on Saturdays in June\, July and August. During these free workshops our concessions will be open and artists will paint on tiles provided by Guild Hall and are asked to bring their own acrylic paints\, brushes\, water jar\, and palette. We ask that each participant gives at least one tile to Guild Hall to be included in a final installation culminating this project in the Fall of 2021. \nThis program will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather. SUMMARY:Moments Choisis by Josephine Meckseper
DESCRIPTION:Guild Hall and the Elaine de Kooning House are pleased to present a new digital film series by Josephine Meckseper\, entitled Moments Choisis. \nDuring her residency at the Elaine de Kooning House\, Meckseper will share weekly three to five-minutes film clips — produced and edited by the artist — chronicling the non-linear process of her new works in the studio. The studio’s architecture will be featured in various cinematic modes with layered shots of the artist’s works in progress and the surrounding landscape. The short films will create a unique view of her residency as well as the space and its history. \nEach new installment from the film series will become available for viewing on guildhall.org at 12PM EST on Tuesdays\, June 22\, June 29\, July 6\, July 13\, July 20. \nMeckseper’s large-scale installations and films have been exhibited in numerous international biennials and museum shows worldwide\, including solo-exhibitions at: Frac des Pays de la Loire\, Nantes\, France (2019); MOSTYN Contemporary Art Gallery\, Wales (2018); Neuer Aachener Kunstverein\, Aachen\, Germany (2014); Kunsthalle Münster\, Germany (2009); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst\, Zurich (2009); and Museum of Modern Art\, New York (2008). In 2013\, Andrea Grover organized Josephine Meckseper: Platform at The Parrish Art Museum in Watermill\, NY. The exhibition challenged traditional disciplinary boundaries by utilizing the entire Museum as a “canvas.” \n \n \n \n \n \nAbout Josephine Meckseper \n \nJosephine Meckseper\, born in Lilienthal\, Germany\, lives and works in New York. She received her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts\, Los Angeles. Her large-scale installations\, vitrines and films create a window into the collective unconscious of our time. Meckseper’s recent narrative movie Pellea[s]\, 2018 includes footage of the historical event of the 45th Presidential Inauguration and concurrent protests filmed\nby the artist. The artist’s first public project in New York\, Manhattan Oil Project\, commissioned by Art Production Fund was installed adjacent to Times Square in 2012. Meckseper’s works have been exhibited in numerous international solo museum shows worldwide\, including her most recent survey exhibition at the Frac des Pays de la Loire (2019); and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein\, Aachen\, Germany\n(2014); The Parrish Art Museum\, Water Mill\, NY (2013); Kunsthalle Münster\, Germany (2009); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst\, Zurich (2009); and Museum of Modern Art\, (with Mikhael Subotzky) New York (2008). SUMMARY:PLAY IN THE GARDEN: A Perfect Ganesh by Terrence McNally
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Amanda Kate Joshi\nFeaturing Shalin Agarwal\, Irene Glezos\, Lué McWilliams\, and Will Porter \nGuild Hall celebrates our 90th anniversary season with a look back at the work of the luminous artist members of our Academy of the Arts. Playwright Terrence McNally was a great friend of the John Drew Theater as well as a Lifetime Achievement Honoree in 1993\, the same year his heartfelt and spiritual play A Perfect Ganesh opened to acclaim at the Manhattan Theatre Club\, and later went on to be nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. Amanda Kate Joshi returns to the Drew to direct this special one-night reading as a highlight of our PLAY IN THE GARDEN series of staged readings. \nIn A Perfect Ganesh\, two middle-aged American women travel to India hoping to heal from their personal tragedies and find inner peace.  After experiencing true culture shock upon arrival\, the women are joined by the Hindu god Ganesha.  This god of wisdom accompanies them\, assuming many different guises along the way.  As the women struggle to overcome their traumas\, Ganesh provides wisdom\, humor\, and safety\, which allows them a glimpse into another world\, and a deeper look into themselves.  A Perfect Ganesh draws on the tragic and the comic\, showing us that while one can look for solace outside oneself\, it is ultimately within oneself where it is found.   \nRun time: Approx 2 hours \nOriginally produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club on June 27\, 1993.\nA PERFECT GANESH is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc.\, New York. \n\nTHIS PROGRAM WILL NOW TAKE PLACE INDOORS IN THE JOHN DREW THEATER. \nGuests ages 5 and up attending any indoor John Drew Theater program must show proof of full vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test results. Face coverings are required for all patrons over the age of 2 regardless of vaccination status.  \nIMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING PROGRAMS INDOORS IN THE JOHN DREW THEATER \nGuests ages 5 and up attending any indoor John Drew Theater program must show proof of full vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test results. Face coverings are required for all patrons over the age of 2 regardless of vaccination status. \nIn order to attend programs indoors in the John Drew Theater\, guests will be responsible for displaying proof of one of the following on arrival: \n\nFull vaccination\, meaning both doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine received at least 14 days prior to the day of the program\nA negative test result from a COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the day of the program\nA negative test result from a COVID-19 Antigen test taken within six (6) hours of the program’s scheduled start time\nCurrent New York State Excelsior Pass with proof of vaccine or negative testing/Antigen results.
