SUMMARY:Enoc Perez: Paradise
DESCRIPTION: \n\nGallery Talk with Enoc Perez and Christina Mossaides Strassfield: Saturday\, May 22 at 3pm \n\n\nMoran & Spiga Gallery \nCurator: Christina Strassfield  \n\n\nEnoc Perez is a  contemporary  Puerto Rican born multimedia  artist best known for his paintings and oil stick drawings. Through large-scale paintings\, Perez refers to the devastation that Puerto Rico experienced during the 2017 Hurricane Maria. Instead of focusing on the physical destruction\, the artist paints bent\, but not broken\, palm trees to represent the hope that Puerto Rico will move forward and recover. \nThe exhibition will include paintings\, sculpture and drawings that have been created specifically for Guild Hall’s installation. Paradise will be exhibited in the Moran and Spiga galleries and will be made up primarily of works that have never shown. \n\nTIMED TICKETS AND VISITOR INFORMATION \nTo ensure the health and safety of its visitors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, Guild Hall has instituted the following measures: \n\nReservations to visit the Museum are recommended. You can reserve timed tickets online or by calling 631-324-0806 Friday-Sunday\, 12-5 p.m. Drop-ins are also welcome!\nVisitors are asked to be on time for their appointment. SUMMARY:Karin Waisman: The Horizon Is Not a Straight Line
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk: Karin Waisman in conversation with Estrellita Brodsky PhD: May 8 at 3pm \nWoodhouse Gallery \nCurator: Christina Strassfield  \nKarin Waisman is an Argentinian\, multidisciplinary artist whose practice investigates the rhythmic cadence and pulsating patterns of nature. Her work includes large-scale public installations\, wall reliefs\, and drawings that explore our perception of the natural world— its fluid and contradictory processes\, boundless growth\, and imminent threat of disorder. In this new exhibition at Guild Hall\, Waisman will present The Horizon Is Not a Straight Line\, a site specific\, 250-inch long cast resin and ceramic wall relief that investigates the notion of the border\, conceiving it not as a straight line but a complex contact point between two elements that push and pull while continuing to support one another. Also included are two series of Waisman’s pencil drawings on mylar. The first\, Fragments of a Mountain (2018–2021)\, studies the passage of geological time\, absolute and determined by emptiness. Hundreds of years of erosion expose cavities in rock that hold humidity and debris. The second series\, titled The Ocean Drawings (2012-2014)\, immerses the viewer into varying depths\, currents\, and temperatures\, evoking oceanic currents that move us deeper then closer to the surface. The final and earliest work\, Siren’s Beach (1996)\, unfolds across the floor in a cast-aluminum sculpture depicting a segment of desiccated land fragmented into a maze of Pythagorean spirals. This is the most in-depth presentation of Waisman’s internationally exhibited collection of work to date.  \nWaisman has completed commissions for institutions such as Espacio Escultórico del Desierto in San Luis Potosí\, México; Museo del Barrio in New York\, NY; Plattsburgh Sculpture Park at SUNY Plattsburgh\, NY; ART/OMI Sculpture Park in Ghent\, NY; and Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City\, NY. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally\, including Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill\, NY; Museo del Barrio in New York\, NY; SculptureCenter in Long Island City\, NY; Point of Contact in Syracuse\, NY; Wallace Gallery in SUNY Old Westbury\, NY; Neuhoff Gallery in New York\, NY; Haim Chanin Fine Arts in New York\, NY; Plattsburgh State Art Museum in Plattsburgh\, NY; Hartell Gallery at Cornell University\, NY; Überseemusum\, Bremen; Unesco Institut für Pädagogik in Hamburg\, Germany; Bürgerhalle im Rathaus in Wolfsburg\, Germany; Museo del Chopo in Mexico City\, Mexico; Yvonamore Palix Gallery in Houston\, TX; and Fundacion Banco Patricios in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. \n  \nTIMED TICKETS AND VISITOR INFORMATION \nTo ensure the health and safety of its visitors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, Guild Hall has instituted the following measures: \n\nReservations to visit the Museum are recommended. SUMMARY:Bel Canto Boot Camp: May Sunday Matinées
DESCRIPTION:For the past three months\, every Sunday at 3 o’clock dozens of singers and lovers of singing from across the world have met to listen topically curated recordings from the past 120 years. Inspired by the success of its Audiophile Society\, Bel Canto Boot Camp (BCBC) has expanded their program and collaboration with Guild Hall in a new series\, Sunday Matinées.  \nSunday Matinée’s is a weekly salon series exploring the ways in which we listen\, react\, and connect with opera and the vocal arts. Led by Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff\, BCBC cofounders\, and Steven Tharp\, curator of Audiophile Society and expert on all things recorded\, we will learn together what to listen for in historical recordings\, and where the technology needs our ears and minds to “fill in” what might not be there. The sessions heavily use the chat feature on zoom\, allowing participants to “pass notes” in real time while the music is happening. At a BCBC session\, we do not have to wait till intermission to share our thoughts and excitement about what we hear!  \nThe May series shifts the perspective away from Operatic repertoire and towards other critical genres for classical voice\, including Choral\, Oratorio\, and Cantorial traditions. \nSCHEDULE  \nChoral Recordings: Sunday\, May 2\nAudiophile Society takes a break from opera to explore the riches of the choral tradition and the changing trends in choral singing during the past century.  \nOratorio: Sunday\, May 9\nOur listening detour leads us next to oratorio – opera without costumes! Join us as we explore the vast repertoire of these once oft-performed works. There’s more than Messiah!   \nThe Cantorial Tradition: Sunday\, May 16\nThe vocal and improvisatory training of the hazzan\, or cantor in the Jewish tradition\, continues to inspire the singer of today.  \nInstrumental Listening: Sunday\, May 23\nAudiophile Society explores what singers and opera lovers can learn from chamber and orchestral music. All the instruments mimic the voice! \nArt Songs: May 30

SUMMARY:RING THE ALARM… A Conversation with Maren Hassinger & Renee Cox
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Maren Hassinger back to the East End and have her join Renee Cox in conversation to fill us in on her current work and her upcoming exhibition at DIA. The RING THE ALARM series began with discussions with Renee Cox on an exhibition of Black Artists that she will be curating for the summer of 2023. \n“Guild Hall is very excited to present this second installment of Ring the Alarm for 2021. We believe now more than ever that the need for open dialogue on art\, race and politics is timely and something that we as a community at large need to engage in more. The reactions to the first 3 talks with Derrick Adams\, Sanford Biggers\, and Shinique Smith were truly inspiring and we plan to continue this series of conversations leading up to the 2023 Summer exhibition that Renee Cox will guest curate.” – Christina Mossaides Strassfield\, Museum Director/Chief Curator

SUMMARY:Community Roundtable: Apex Ape & The Changing Nature of Consumerism
DESCRIPTION:Join Guild Hall Community Artists-in-Residence\, Brenna Leaver\, Julian Alvarez\, and Devon Leaver for a roundtable discussion on the changing face of the Hamptons. Topics will include the death of “mom & pop shops\,” the transformation of East Hampton’s store fronts\, local legends\, and the future of our community. \nThe topics discussed and experiences shared will act as source material for the creation of the artists new short film\, Apex Ape. \nAbout Apex Ape\nThe Apex Department Store is an imposing white ziggurat and local landmark in Pawtucket\, Rhode Island\, built in 1969. In response to the advent of online shopping\, the core of the Apex Department store slowly receded through the years\, leading to its permanent closure in 2021. On a warm summer night in 1986\, witnesses saw a massive albino ape scaling the side of the ziggurat. The merit of the building–whether nostalgic\, or an eyesore–is highly contested\, but nobody discusses what will happen to the Ape when his habitat is destroyed. \nApex Ape is an original creature and film compiling documentary interviews with local residents\, and dramatic footage that captures the Ape’s last dance before his home is demolished. Apex Ape will explore the death of brick and mortar\, and the changing nature of consumerism through the lens of dead-malls and local legend. It will examine how the inability to adapt to a changing environment inevitably leaves stragglers in the lurch. \n
