SUMMARY:RING THE ALARM… A Conversation with Shinique Smith & Renee Cox
DESCRIPTION:Q&A moderated by Phyllis Hollis\, the founder and host of Cerebral Women Art Talks. \nThe idea for RING THE ALARM… A Conversation with series Renee Cox began with discussions on an exhibition of Black Artists that Renee Cox will be curating for the summer of 2023. \n“Guild Hall is very excited to present this first installment of Ring the Alarm for 2021. We believe now more than ever that the need for open dialogue on art\, race and politics is timely and something that we as a community at large need to engage in more. The response to the first 2 talks with Derrick Adams and Sanford Biggers was truly inspiring and we plan to continue this series of conversations leading up to the 2023 Summer exhibition that Renee Cox will guest curate.” –Christina Mossaides Strassfield\, Museum Director/Chief Curator

SUMMARY:Bel Canto Boot Camp: March Sunday Matinées
DESCRIPTION:For the past three months\, every Sunday at 3 o’clock dozens of singers and lovers of singing from across the world have met to listen topically curated recordings from the past 120 years. Inspired by the success of its Audiophile Society\, Bel Canto Boot Camp (BCBC) has expanded their program and collaboration with Guild Hall in a new series\, Sunday Matinées.  \nSunday Matinées is a weekly salon series exploring the ways in which we listen\, react\, and connect with opera and the vocal arts. Led by Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff\, BCBC cofounders\, and Steven Tharp\, curator of Audiophile Society and expert on all things recorded\, we will learn together what to listen for in historical recordings\, and where the technology needs our ears and minds to “fill in” what might not be there. The sessions heavily use the chat feature on zoom\, allowing participants to “pass notes” in real time while the music is happening. At a BCBC session\, we do not have to wait till intermission to share our thoughts and excitement about what we hear!  \n The March series also includes a special two-part lecture on “The Life and Deaths of Maria Callas\,” facilitated by guest artist\, Will Crutchfield\, and a unique focus on the science behind vocal technique.   \nSCHEDULE  \nHow High Can You Go? Whistle Tone Exploration?: Sunday\, March 7\nA listening-based dive into the vocal register called whistle tone\, enabling sopranos to sing the highest of high notes. BCBC is joined by Dr. Kimberly Gratland James of UNLV\, Dr. Dana Long Zenobi of Butler University\, and whistle-tone expert soprano Julia Radosz for an explanatory discussion of singing in the rafters!  \nThe Life and Deaths of Maria Callas: Sunday\, March 14\nWhat went wrong with Callas? Will Crutchfield joins BCBC to discuss his 1996 New Yorker article on the mystery (article will be sent once registered).  \nListening to Maria Callas: Sunday\, March 21\nSteven Tharp is rejoined by Will Crutchfield for a curated listening session to follow the discographical traces left by the diva.  \nLooking at Singing: Sunday\, March 28\nThe past several decades saw an explosion of technology developed to understand and explain the human voice – the only instrument we can hear but not see! Join BCBC and our resident voice science experts as we discuss what great singing looks like.

SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Showcase: Mark Sarvas
DESCRIPTION:Join Author and Guild Hall’s 2021 Guild House Artist-in-Residence\, Mark Sarvas for a discussion on his 2019 American Book Award winning novel\, Memento Park.  \nAfter receiving an unexpected call from the Australian consulate\, Matt Santos becomes aware of a painting that he believes was looted from his family in Hungary during the Second World War. To recover the painting\, he must repair his strained relationship with his harshly judgmental father\, uncover his family history\, and restore his connection to his own Judaism. Along the way to illuminating the mysteries of his past\, Matt is torn between his girlfriend Tracy and his attorney Rachel\, with whom he travels to Budapest to unearth the truth about the painting and\, in turn\, his family. As his journey progresses\, Matt’s revelations are accompanied by equally consuming and imaginative meditations on the painting and the painter at the center of his personal drama\, Budapest Street Scene by Ervin Kálmán. By the time Memento Park reaches its conclusion\, Matt’s narrative is as much about family history and father-son dynamics as it is about the nature of art itself\, and the infinite ways we come to understand ourselves through it.  \nOf all the questions asked by Mark Sarvas’s Memento Park ―about family and identity\, about art and history― a central\, unanswerable predicament lingers: How do we move forward when the past looms unreasonably large?  \nThe evening\, produced in partnership with BookHampton\, will also feature discussions on and readings of new works/excerpts written during Sarvas’ time as a Guild House Artist-in-Residence. Copies of Sarvas’ Memento Park are available for purchase at the BookHampton storefront or online.  \n \nAbout Guild Hall’s Guild House Artist-in-Residence Program\nEstablished in 2016\, Guild Hall’s Guild House Artist-in-Residence (GHAIR) program offers artists and collectives the time and space to research\, experiment\, and develop new ideas/projects. Throughout the month-long residency\, residents connect with accomplished artists\, community leaders\, and philanthropists at weekly salon dinners\, receive mentorship from select members of our Academy of the Arts and Staff\, and visit artist studios\, cultural centers\, and the natural preserves of the Hamptons.  \nDue to the Covid19 pandemic\, the Winter 2021 GHAIR program was completed remotely from each artists home/studio.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Museum Director’s Choice with Christina Mossaides Strassfield
DESCRIPTION:Take a tour of the 83rd Artist Members Exhibition with Christina Mossaides Strassfield\, Museum Director/Chief Curator. \nThis year Guild Hall Celebrates its 90th Anniversary and its 83rd Artist Members Exhibition. The first Artist Members Exhibition took place in 1938\, shortly after Guild Hall’s inception in 1931. The exhibition is the oldest non-juried show on Long Island and one of the few non-juried exhibitions still running. Deeply rooted in the history of the East End artist colony\, early participants included Jackson Pollock\, Lee Krasner\, Alfonso Ossorio\, Perle Fine\, Bill King\, James Brooks\, Charlotte Park\, John Little and many more\, showing their support of Guild Hall and its role as their community Museum\, Theater\, and Education Center. \nDue to the wonderful popularity of this exhibition\, around 400 artists participate each year. The Artist Members Exhibition attracts remarkable art world professionals as awards jurors who select winners in the categories of Top Honors\, Best Abstract\, Best Representational\, Best Photograph\, Best Work on Paper\, Best Sculpture\, Best Mixed Media\, Catherine and Theo Hios Best Landscape Award\, Best New Artist and up to 10 Honorable Mentions. The Top Honors winner is also awarded a solo exhibition in the Museum at a later date. We are honored to welcome Antwaun Sargent as this year’s awards juror. \nThe new tradition of creating an ecommerce website in conjunction with the exhibition continues this year in addition to virtual gallery tours and artist talks.

SUMMARY:A Virtual Reading of SQUEAKY by Jeff Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Hamptons Arts Network THAWfest Featured Program \nDirected by Bob Balaban\nStarring Jessica Hecht\, Marc Kudisch\, LaTanya Richardson Jackson\, Ben Shenkman\, and Harris Yulin \nDrama Desk Award winner Jeff Cohen (The Soap Myth\, The Man Who Ate Michael Rockefeller) has penned an audacious autobiographical comedy about his eccentric dad\, Stan “Squeaky” Cohen. SQUEAKY is about wrestling with end-of-life issues while maintaining your sense of humor. \nCharacters & Cast\nSQUEAKY (Harris Yulin) is the man who was banned from every Old Country Buffet in the metro Baltimore area – for stealing cake. He can’t remember where he lost his car. He lives in Baltimore’s most crime-ridden neighborhood in a ramshackle house that is a city inspection away from being condemned – and refuses to move. \nJEFF (Marc Kudisch) is the writer living in New York who finds himself battling his brother Rob over what is best for their father. He is being forced to reckon with childhood events he’s spent a lifetime trying to forget. \nROB (Ben Shenkman) is Jeff’s libidinous older brother who just recently joined the “mile high club” with a stranger he met in first class. Rob is a charmer with a felonious past for drug trafficking. \nCONNIE (Latanya Richardson Jackson) is Squeaky’s long time roommate and caretaker. She greets strangers at the front door with a baseball bat. In short\, she is a kook. \nSANDY (Jessica Hecht) is Jeff and Rob’s estranged mother\, now dying in a hospice in Baltimore. She wore black to Jeff’s Bar Mitzvah\, arrived late and stormed out early. She was a strong proponent of Werner Erhard’s EST – which explains all you need to know about her. \nNote: While SQUEAKY depicts real people and real events it is also a work of fiction from the playwright’s memory. It may not be wholly accurate but it strives to be truthful.\n
