SUMMARY:All for the Hall
DESCRIPTION: \nCLICK HERE TO PURCHASE WORKS FROM THE EXHIBITION\n\n\n\nEver since I was a child\, I have been envious of birds.\nThe feeling of flight–the gesture of simply outstretching my arms and lifting up to fly\, the rush of air underneath–it is a feeling I find myself contemplating far more during these strange trying days of the virus as I imagine us all being lifted up out of this dark storm. \nThe first version I made of this drawing was not translucent or bright enough to successfully evoke that sensation; I re-made the drawing so it would appear to softly glow from within\, playing on the light as it passes through the translucent vellum to the paper behind it. In making this work\, I referenced several different images of swan wings so the drawing would have an uncanny artificiality\, conjuring a utopic dream. I wanted this drawing to possess an ethereal quality\, a real image of Hope. \n – Robert Longo \n\n\n\nRenowned American artist Robert Longo has mobilized 60 artists to donate artworks for a special benefit exhibition supporting Guild Hall\, the historic multidisciplinary center that has long served the artist community of Long Island’s East End. In response to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic\, All for the Hall includes painting\, sculpture\, photography and new site-responsive installations by such artists as Laurie Anderson\, Philippe Cheng\, Jeremy Dennis\, Eric Fischl\, Rashid Johnson\, Shirin Neshat\, Enoc Perez\, Dorothea Rockburne\, Ugo Rondinone\, Clifford Ross\, Cindy Sherman\, Kiki Smith\, Karin Waisman\, and Robert Wilson\, among many others. The museum exhibition will be on view at Guild Hall from August 8 through December 31\, 2020\, with a corresponding virtual gallery here. All works are available for purchase at accessible price points starting at $500\, with all proceeds benefiting Guild Hall.  \nPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic\, Guild Hall had planned a solo exhibition dedicated to Longo this summer. As the scale and impact of this crisis became known and Guild Hall was forced to cancel its annual Summer Gala and Auction\, Longo suggested postponing the exhibition and leading this alternative fundraising initiative\, alongside Guild Hall’s Museum Director and Chief Curator\, Christina Mossaides Strassfield\, who is curating the exhibition. The exhibition follows a recent stage fundraiser that was also initiated by the artist community\, a virtual staged reading of Same Time\, Next Year\, directed by Bob Balaban and featuring Alec Baldwin and Julianne Moore.  \nSince it was founded in 1931\, Guild Hall has served as a cultural cornerstone of Long Island’s East End and as a resource for the artist communities that have long existed in the Hamptons. The benefit exhibition reflects the commitment and long-standing relationship between the center and area artists that has developed over the years. The artists featured in All for the Hall include internationally renowned artists as well as those with local acclaim\, united by their personal connections to East End\, having lived\, worked\, or consistently visited the region. \nPARTICIPATING ARTISTS \nJohn Alexander\, Laurie Anderson\, Alice Aycock\, Elena Bajo\, Jules de Balincourt\, Kirsten Benfield\, Ross Bleckner\, Dianne Blell\, Ellen Carey\, Philippe Cheng\, Chuck Close\, Renee Cox\, Jennifer Cross\, Rob Davis\, Jeremy Dennis\, Anh Duong\, Eric Fischl\, Margaret Garrett\, Ralph Gibson\, Wade Guyton\, Michael Halsband\, Hiroyuki Hamada\, Val Hindra\, Sheree Hovsepian\, Judith Hudson\, Bryan Hunt\, Yung Jake\, Rashid Johnson\, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov\, Jon Kessler\, Bill Komoski\, Robert Longo\, Katherine McMahon\, Joel Mesler\, Steve Miller\, Sam Moyer\, Warren Neidich\, Shirin Neshat\, John Noestheden\, Paulina Olowska\, Dennis Oppenheim\, Tony Oursler\, Carol Peligian\, Enoc Perez\, Dorothea Rockburne\, Alexis Rockman\, Ugo Rondinone\, Clifford Ross\, Toni Ross\, David Salle\, Mason Saltarrelli\, Matthew Satz\, Bastienne Schmidt\, Cindy Sherman\, Taryn Simon\, Kiki Smith\, Ned Smyth\, Adam Straus\, Billy Sullivan\, Sara VanDerBeek\, Karin Waisman\, Nick Weber\, Robert Wilson\, Lucy Winton\, Darius Yektai\, Nico Yektai\, and Almond Zigmund.

SUMMARY:Lindsay Morris: A Small Taste of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:A Small Taste of Freedom is an exhibition by the photographer Lindsay Morris which resulted from a collaboration between Morris and the Guild Hall Teen Arts Council (GHTAC) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Composed of portraits and audio interviews of GHTAC members living under New York State’s “stay at home” order\, the exhibition captures the everyday happenings\, coping mechanisms\, and escape modes of area teens living through this historic moment. \nMorris’ series is a true reflection of the challenge teenagers faced as their final months of school\, graduation\, prom\, and other rites of passage slipped away. The project began as a portrait series of high school seniors in their cars\, recording the expressions and body language of young people on the cusp of adulthood\, with the automobile representing a quest for autonomy and freedom. As spring began and the reality of the pandemic set-in\, the adventurous and hopeful narrative of these young people changed. \nA simply stated question was posed to Guild Hall’s Teen Arts Council members: How is Covid-19 affecting you? Their answers regarding family hardships\, concerns about academic success\, fears regarding our global community\, and free-floating anxiety are embedded in the visual and audio material exhibited\, but even without accompanying interviews\, the facial expressions in these portraits tell a story of loss and uncertainty.  \nThe car no longer represents a getaway toward an exciting future\, but rather a means to escape from stressful and even claustrophobic home lives. In some scenarios\, if the weather cooperates\, the vehicle takes teens to much-needed\, albeit socially distanced\, tailgate meet-ups. This new framing of the automobile (or other mode of transportation like bikes and skateboards) as an escape rather than a leap into the future\, tells a different story.  \nLindsay Morris: A Small Taste of Freedom is on view during regular museum hours\, and is the first exhibition in the newly renovated Guild Hall Lounge. To experience the audio portion of this exhibit\, patrons must bring their own mobile device with ability to scan a QR code\, and a pair of headphones.   \nThe teens pictured are members of the Guild Hall Teen Arts Council (TAC). All portraits are shot by Lindsay Morris with Kodak Portra film. All audio recorded and edited by the individual TAC Member with readily available devices.   \nCurators\nCasey Dalene\, Curatorial Assistant & Lewis B. Cullman Associate for Museum Education\nAnthony Madonna\, The Patti Kenner Fellow in Arts Education  \n  \nTIMED TICKETS AND VISITOR INFORMATION \nTo ensure the health and safety of its visitors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, Guild Hall has instituted the following measures: \n\nReservations to visit the Museum are recommended. You can reserve timed tickets online or by calling 631-324-0806 Saturday-Sunday\, 12-5 p.m. Drop-ins are also welcome!\nVisitors are asked to be on time for their appointment. Visits are for a maximum of one hour and no more than 50 people will be allowed in the museum galleries at a time.\nVisitors should enter through the left most front door of the building and check in with the Receptionist at the box office. A one-way footpath proceeds throughout the museum.\nMasks are required in the building for all patrons over the age of 2.\nSocial distancing of at least 6 feet is encouraged in the museum galleries and lobby.

SUMMARY:Monica Banks: Cloud Garden
DESCRIPTION:Cloud Garden is a site-specific outdoor installation and community project by artist\, Monica Banks. Installed in the trees of Guild Hall’s Furman Garden\, tangles of wire\, balled-up deer fencing\, feathers\, pop tops from seltzer cans\, unidentifiable pieces of hardware\, and other artifacts from the artist’s everyday life hang as mobiles\, creating dangling objects that shimmer in the air like the stories we tell about ourselves.  \nBanks’ “Cloud” series began in 2006 when the artist received boxes of her childhood toys\, jewelry and trinkets. Wanting to give meaning to her history through sculpture\, Banks combined souvenirs of her present life with these fragments of her past in tangles of wire that hang\, cloud-like\, from ceilings or tree branches. She is revisiting this process during the Covid–19 pandemic\, when like most of us\, she is spending more time at home immersed in the minutia of domestic life. The work in this installation updates her materials as a record of this extraordinary time\, and includes samples from the bag of orphan socks she discovered in the back of a closet\, pieces of a wall sculpture she made for her infant son (now 24 years old)\, fingertips of unused gloves\, tufts of fur from her new puppy\, and shards of the Nerf soccer ball he attacked\, along with other items unearthed during the prolonged quarantine.  \nThe installation expands into Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden with an exhibit of student work; Saturday\, September 19 – Monday\, October 12. Through remote workshops with The Bridgehampton Childcare & Recreational Center\, Banks has shared her work and process with children of The Center\, resulting in an installation of the children’s own cloud sculptures.  \nCurator\nChristina Strassfield\, Museum Director/Chief Curator  \nProject Coordinator\nAnthony Madonna\, The Patti Kenner Fellow in Arts Education   \nCloud Garden is on view during regular Museum Hours. The Guild Hall Gardens are self-monitoring spaces; we ask that patrons observe proper physical-distancing\, observe maximum capacity signage\, and wear face-coverings on the grounds.

SUMMARY:Virtual Reading: A Land Without Weather
DESCRIPTION:What to do during a global pandemic? Former Guild Hall artist-in-residence and playwright/performer Dipti Bramhandkar offers varying viewpoints in A Land Without Weather\, which premieres in a virtual reading on Sunday\, October 4 at 8 PM.\n \n“I’m swinging on a pendulum between pointless and purposeful. One day\, I’m thinking this pandemic is a cosmic call to action and the next\, I’ve got my hand in a bag of Ruffles. Anyone else feel like this?” \n \nSpecially commissioned by Josh Gladstone\, Artistic Director of the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall\, A Land Without Weather creatively stems from interviews with both New York City residents and members of East End communities\, expanding the playwright’s recent Quarantheater series. These encounters weave together a rich fabric of diverse experiences and outlooks expressed by a talented troupe in an exciting new work. \n \nWith a running time of about an hour\, A Land Without Weather interlaces monologues and scenes filled with nostalgia\, fear\, desire\, humor\, hope\, and intimate moments of everyday life under the tyrannical hand of coronavirus. Vignettes include the patient care of a rosarian\, the thoughts of a speculative new homeowner\, and a senior citizen who\, instead of retirement\, is hopeful about her next chapter in a move to the country.\n \nStories were mined from individuals through Organicazión Latino-Americana (OLA) of Eastern Long Island; Ma’s House\, a Shinnecock BIPOC Art Studio; the Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreation Center; Volunteers for Guild Hall\, and others from the East End and New York City.\n \n“I drew from the stories that were shared with me\,” said Bramhandkar\, “sometimes combining several different people into one character. It’s a work of fiction\, but it’s based in real-life experiences from real people.”\n \nDirected by multiple award winner Padraic Lillis (Artistic Director of The Farm Theater) and produced by Guild Hall’s Anthony Madonna\, A Land Without Weather features Chris McGarry\, David Anzuelo\, Purva Bedi\, Rajesh Bose\, Nat Cassidy\, Scott Hudson\, Julia Knippen\, Eric T. Miller\, Kelley Rae O’Donnell\, Rahoul Roy\, Sidney Williams\, Martha Wollner\, and David Zayas. Josh Gladstone is the Executive Producer; Patrick Dawson is Virtual Technical Director.\n\n \nTHE PLAYWRIGHT:\nDipti Bramhandkar’s residency gained the attention of Guild Hall board members and local artist/writers\, leading to an invitation to sit with Salman Rushdie at the 2020 Academy of the Arts dinner. Since then her one-woman performance piece\, American Rookie—about her experiences being raised in rural upstate New York after moving from Mumbai\, from mimicking ‘80s fashion and studying Judy Blume books to constructing a new American persona altogether—sold out and was extended during its January 2020 run at Luna Stage. That same month there was a reading of her play Islands of Contentment for LAByrinth Theater Company’s Barn Series at Cherry Lane. \n \nIn 2014\, Bramhandkar’s first play\, The Accident\, won numerous awards at the Frigid Festival. She is a graduate of Cornell University (BA) and Cambridge University (MA) in English literature.\n\nCAST \nDavid Anzuelo\nPurva Bedi\nRajesh Bose\nNat Cassidy\nScott Hudson\nJulia Knippen\nChris McGarry\nEric T. SUMMARY:Suzanne Vega: An Evening of New York Songs and Stories\, Live streamed from the Blue Note Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Grammy Award-winning artist Suzanne Vega will celebrate the release of her new\, career-spanning live album\, An Evening of New York Songs and Stories (out September 11 via Amanuensis/Cooking Vinyl) with a livestream event from New York’s iconic Blue Note Jazz Club on October 7 and 8. The first of the two performances will be timed for North American audiences and the second for UK and European fans. The full-band set will feature the album’s New York-centric repertoire\, honoring Vega’s long musical relationship with her city. \nAt the Blue Note\, Vega will be joined by longtime guitarist Gerry Leonard\, bassist Jeff Allen and keyboardist Jason Hart. Recorded in early 2019\, An Evening of New York Songs and Stories includes familiar songs like “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” alongside deep cuts from her catalog like “Frank and Ava” and “Ludlow Street.” The mix of repertoire also features “New York Is My Destination” from Lover\, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers\, Vega’s one-woman play about the Southern gothic novelist Carson McCullers. An Evening of New York Songs and Stories was produced by Leonard\, mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Kevin Killen and mastered by Grammy Award winner Bob Ludwig. \nWidely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation\, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s. Since the release of her self-titled\, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album\, her songs have become part of the contemporary music vernacular.

SUMMARY:Rosario Varela: Red\, Gold\, and You
DESCRIPTION:Red\, Gold\, and You  is an outdoor installation and durational piece by  artist\, Rosario Varela. Installed in Guild Hall’s Minikes Garden for two weekends\, cellular patterns of red paper and gold tape weave through the trees and shrubbery while a team of mindful artists alter and gradually redesign the piece\, embracing the beauty of impermanence and chance.    \nVarela’s artistic curiosity stems from a passion for tactile experience\, and a unique eye for pattern. From organic and gestural to precise and organized\, her work in painting and ceramics reflects the patterns found in her natural surroundings\, and the responsive effect of material in her hands. Red\, Gold\, and You expands the scope of Varela’s work\, exploring a new medium and scale for the artist; returning to her roots in graphic design and architecture\, and responding to the everchanging circumstances of a global pandemic.    \nVarela found herself paused in the studio when the pandemic first broke-out. Not wanting to return to her ceramics or paintings\, she discovered a roll of abandoned red paper. In experimenting with the material\, Varela began creating links of various diameters\, connecting and interconnecting them\, forming cellular patterns. At times when the paper would tear\, she would rejoin the ends with gold tape; a nod to the Japanese practice\, Kintsugi. The process soon became a meditative act\, allowing the artist to reflect on her\, and society’s\, need for connection and restoration.    \nRed\, Gold\, and You expands this experience by opening the process to both a trained team of artists\, comprised of Guild Hall’s Teen Arts Council\, and the viewing public. Artists and patrons will interact to detach\, reshape\, and adjoin the paper links\, replicating Varela’s experimentation and transferring the ownership and over-all design of the work from artist to community. In the best of worlds\, this process involves collaboration\, respect\, and risk-taking\, embracing the beauty of decay\, appreciating the impermanence of our creation\, and applauding the performance of our community.     \nIn tandem with the installation\, Guild Hall will host a blood drive in partnership with the New York Blood Center (NYBC) on Friday\, October 23\, 11:30am–5:30pm. Guild Hall has organized blood drives in East Hampton during the most threatening of times\, responding to the needs of World War II in the 1940s and through the 70s during the Vietnam War. According to NYBC\, blood from volunteer donors is needed every two seconds to help meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients\, accident and burn victims\, newborns and mothers delivering babies\, AIDS and sickle cell anemia patients\, and many more. Today’s pandemic has shuttered reoccurring donation drives\, causing an anticipated 75% decrease in donations. In hosting a blood drive during Varela’s Red\, Gold\, and You\, Guild Hall transfers the artist’s reflection on connection and restoration towards the civic act of blood donation; acknowledging Guild Hall’s founding mission to be “a gathering place for the community where an appreciation for the arts would serve to encourage greater civic participation.”    \nCURATORS\nCasey Dalene\, Curatorial Asst. & Lewis B. Cullman Assoc. for Museum Education\nAnthony Madonna\, The Patti Kenner Fellow in Arts Education  \nRosario Varela is an inaugural Guild Hall Community Artist-in-Residence. The Community-Artist-in-Residence program seeks to engage and support four regional artists. Given either an indoor exhibition space or outdoor performance and/or installation site on the Guild Hall campus\, the artists will work with community groups to devise\, create\, and develop new work to be on view through the Summer and Fall months. Artists will be chosen by the senior leadership of Guild Hall based on the community-aspect of their work and a history or interest in public practice. Other Artist-in-Residence include Monica Banks\, Viv Corringham\, and Lindsay Morris.  \nRed\, Gold\, and You is on view during regular Museum Hours. The Guild Hall Gardens are self-monitoring spaces. We ask that patrons reserve a visitation time\, observe proper physical-distance\, observe maximum capacity signage\, and wear face-coverings on the grounds.

SUMMARY:ON DEMAND: A Virtual Conversation on the making of Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:It seems only natural that the globally celebrated Iranian-born photographer and filmmaker Shirin Neshat — who has spent a lifetime revealing the injustices between classes and genders\, mostly in Islamic societies — would eventually turn her iconic kohl-lined eyes toward the same discrepancies in her adopted home country\, the United States. \nThe result — released earlier this year — is the Land of Dreams exhibition\, a poignant and at times satirical two-part video installation on the hopes and desires of America’s marginalized masses\, in particular\, people of color in New Mexico\, one of the poorest states. Neshat\, who was named the most important artist of the decade by Huffington Post critic G. Roger Denson\, included communities of immigrants (mostly Latino)\, African-Americans\, and the Native American population. \nAnd while she was filming Land of Dreams\, Sophie Chahinian of The Artist Profile was filming her. \nIt all came together at Guild Hall in A Conversation on The Making of Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams on Sunday\, October 18\, at 5:30pm\, featuring both Neshat and Chahinian on the John Drew Theater stage\, interviewed by Guild Hall’s Executive Director Andrea Grover\, recorded with all of the proper COVID-19 protocol in place. \nThe Making of Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams by Sophie Chahinian runs 25 minutes\, and is part of the one-hour Guild Hall event\, which focusses on Neshat’s life as an immigrant artist\, the art world\, and how it has changed in the current climate.  \n“Recently I realized that part of the reason I never worked in America\, even though I lived in this country\, was that I never assimilated completely . . . as an Iranian-American\, I still felt like an outsider\,” Neshat admitted during the interview on stage at Guild Hall. “I never allowed myself to make a narrative about America\, until today.” \nGrover is uniquely positioned as a presenter\, not only because of her relationship with Guild Hall\, but as the founder of Houston’s Aurora Picture Show when she was only 27. \n“Initially\, Sophie had wanted to do a profile of Shirin Neshat for The Artist Profile Archive. Instead\, Shirin invited her on-location to shoot a behind-the-scenes\, making-of documentary. Shirin Neshat is probably one of the most renowned living artists. It was a huge honor to have her at Guild Hall and to interview her\,” Grover said. \nChahinian’s film was included as part of the public programming of Neshat’s major exhibition Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again at the Broad Art Museum\, October 2019 through Feb. 16\, 2020. The documentary provides an alternate perspective on Neshat’s process and intention. Key members of the Land of Dreams film team provide insightful commentary about the personal and political backdrop to the surreal videos as they were being created.  \n“Shirin Neshat is an artist whose work I have admired for years\,” said Guild Hall’s Museum Director Christina Strassfield. “Her use of herself and other female characters in her art as well as behind the scenes in the creation of her films has always fostered an innate feeling of female empowerment. As a first generation Greek-American\, I truly could relate to the issues she put forth on immigration\, acceptance\, and assimilation\, and what each of those cost to you as the individual. Her films juxtapose the ethereal and gritty reality of life\, and the play between them\, as well as the psychological back and forth.”  \nOf The Artist Profile’s founder\, Strassfield added\, “Sophie Chahinian is an amazing filmmaker who is doing excellent work documenting artists of every level and letting them speak in their own voice. The films that are part of The Artist Profile Archive will have a lasting effect and be an asset for generations to come. The Making of Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams is by far Sophie’s best work. She was able to capture Shirin’s energy and passion and have it come across in her own voice.”

SUMMARY:RING THE ALARM…A Conversation with Sanford Biggers & Renee Cox
DESCRIPTION:The idea for RING THE ALARM… A Conversation with series Renee Cox began with discussions on an exhibition of Black Artists that Renee Cox will be curating for the summer of 2023. The first in the series was a conversation with Derrick Adams and Renee Cox both noted artists\, colleagues and friends\, who have a long history of exhibiting work and curating exhibitions that focus on empowerment\, the black experience\, and issues of contemporary life.  \n \nWe are delighted to welcome Sanford Biggers as the next artist to engage in the Ring the Alarm series of conversations. Sanford Biggers’ work is an interplay of narrative\, perspective and history that speaks to current social\, political and economic happenings while also examining the contexts that bore them. His diverse practice positions him as a collaborator with the past through explorations of often overlooked cultural and political narratives from American history. Working with antique quilts that echo rumors of their use as signposts on the Underground Railroad\, he engages these legends and contributes to this narrative by drawing and painting directly onto them. In response to ongoing occurrences of police brutality against Black Americans\, Biggers’ “BAM” series is composed of bronze sculptures recast from fragments of wooden African statues that have been anonymized through dipping in wax and then ballistically ‘resculpted’.  \n \n“The need for open dialogue on art\, race and politics felt timely and something that we believe the community at large was looking for. The response to that first talk was truly inspiring and we plan to continue this series of conversations next year and leading up to the 2023 Summer exhibition.” noted Christina Strassfield\, Museum Director/Chief Curator.

SUMMARY:Blood Drive: New York Blood Center
DESCRIPTION:In tandem with the installation\, Rosario Varela: Red\, Gold\, and You\, Guild Hall will host a blood drive in partnership with the New York Blood Center (NYBC) on Friday\, October 23\, 11:30am–5:30pm in our Boots Lamb Education Center.  \nGuild Hall has organized blood drives in East Hampton during the most threatening of times\, responding to the needs of World War II in the 1940s and through the 70s during the Vietnam War. \nIn hosting a blood drive during Varela’s Red\, Gold\, and You\, Guild Hall transfers the artist’s reflection on connection and restoration towards the civic act of blood donation; acknowledging Guild Hall’s founding mission to be “a gathering place for the community where an appreciation for the arts would serve to encourage greater civic participation.”   \nReservations are highly recommended. For questions regarding safety and covid-19 protocols\, please visit the NYBC information page.
