SUMMARY:National Theatre Live at Home: This House
DESCRIPTION:Visit the National Theatre’s homepage to view this stream for one week after it premieres \nEnjoying two sold-out National Theatre runs\, filmed live on stage in 2013\, and a West End transfer\, This House is a timely\, moving and funny insight into the workings of British politics by James Graham (Ink\, ITV’s Quiz). \nIt’s 1974\, and Britain has a hung Parliament.  The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backstabbing as the political parties battle to change the future of the nation. \nDuring this era of chaos\, when a staggering number of politicians die and age-old traditions are thrown aside\, MPs find they must roll up their sleeves\, and bend the rules\, to navigate a way through the Mother of all Parliaments. \nJeremy Herrin (People\, Places and Things) directs this much-loved production\, available to watch on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel from Thursday 28 May.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Strauss’s Salome
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nIt is no wonder that Met audiences have gone wild over Karita Mattila’s sizzling Salome. Indisputably one of the greatest Salomes of our time\, Mattila utterly incarnates Oscar Wilde’s petulant\, willful\, and lust-driven heroine. With Strauss’s groundbreaking music magnifying the degenerate atmosphere and building the erotic tension\, this is one opera that is as shocking today as it was at its premiere in 1905.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Bellini’s I Puritani
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nA saga of star-crossed love and family drama set against the strife of the 17th-century English Civil War\, Bellini’s bel-canto gem is best known for its mad scene\, one of the repertory’s most spectacular. Elvira\, a young Puritan woman\, is set to marry Arturo\, a royalist. But when his duty to the crown comes between them\, and Elvira finds herself abandoned on her wedding day\, she descends into madness with a breathtaking outpouring of virtuosity that only this style of opera can deliver.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Berg’s Lulu
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nFew existences are more perilous than those of opera heroines\, who must contend with an inexhaustible supply of lethal hazards. But even by such standards\, Berg’s Lulutells a particularly harrowing tale. Based on two plays by Frank Wedekind\, it is the story of the ultimate femme fatale\, who seduces a series of men\, kills or causes the death of four of them\, is herself victimized along the way\, and is ultimately slain by Jack the Ripper while working as a prostitute. Throughout\, Berg provides depth\, ambiguity\, and psychological impact with his unsettling and unforgettable score\, prodigious in complexity and power.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nThe immortal Orpheus myth—something of an origin story for the power of music—has inspired numerous operas and other compositions\, including this 1762 masterpiece by Christoph Willibald Gluck. A prime example of what has come to be known as “reform opera\,” Orfeo ed Euridice strips away the self-conscious virtuosity and labyrinthine plotlines common in earlier 18th-century opera\, replacing them with musical and emotional directness intended to draw the audience more deeply into the drama.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Puccini’s Tosca
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nIn his classic potboiler\, Puccini stirs together some of humanity’s strongest motivating forces—love and loyalty\, fear and cruelty—to create an operatic thriller that sinks its teeth into the listener with the opening chords and never lets go. Taking place in Rome in 1800\, the story concerns a fiery yet devoted diva\, the painter/revolutionary she loves\, and a sadistic police chief determined to crush political rebellion and claim Tosca for himself. All three are among opera’s most indelible characters.

Utilizing simple materials found at home\, learners of all ages will explore new ways of bringing creativity into their everyday by virtually visiting and creating with an East End artist.   \nIn this episode\, join artist Elizabeth Karsch and her family for a workshop on artist release:  \n“Navigating through life’s challenges can be difficult\, especially while we shelter at home\, but mark-making offers a simple way to tap into and release some of the feelings we’re experiencing. Making quick pencil lines\, painting smooth brush strokes\, or smudging charcoal onto paper offers a physical release of our internal chatter and a bit of therapeutic relief.  We might “map out” a feeling with compositional arrangements\, or paint a certain color to represent someone we long for. There are no mistakes because it’s all about the process\, and a funny-looking mark or an unintentional drip of paint will offer a new way to look at the situation.  Paint it over\, tear it up\, or leave it alone to ponder its possibilities…” \nMaterials List: \n\npaper\, cardboard\, or other flat surface to paint/draw on\nany paint (watercolor\, acrylic\, old house paint)\ncolored pencils or crayons \npastels or charcoal (if available)\npaintbrush\nwater\ndishtowel or rag\n\nNew episodes\, led by a different artist\, will be posted on our website and Instagram each Friday afternoon at 1pm. If you post your art to social media\, be sure to hashtag it with #GHARTBREAK

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nBased on Luis Buñuel’s surrealist film about an invisible force that prevents the attendees of a dinner party from leaving\, Thomas Adès’s modern opera is a powerful exploration of isolation and confinement that feels particularly relevant today. Adès creates a unique and captivating sound world\, incorporating a number of unusual instruments into the orchestra and asking for increasingly acrobatic vocal feats from the singers to match the escalating confusion and desperation of their characters as their captivity stretches endlessly on.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Verdi’s Otello
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nIn his towering penultimate opera\, Verdi distills Shakespeare’s tragedy to its purest elements and demonstrates his unsurpassed mastery of characterization and pacing. Unlike his earlier works\, which featured many memorable\, self-contained arias\, duets\, and ensemble numbers\, Otello proceeds almost seamlessly\, with no interruption of the dramatic momentum. Iago’s duplicity\, Desdemona’s wrongful death\, Otello’s fall—all are made overwhelmingly visceral in a work that shows both Verdi and opera itself at the height of their powers.

SUMMARY:Nightly Met Opera Streams: Massenet’s Thaïs
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Metropolitan Opera’s homepage to view this stream for 23 hours after it premieres \nIt is the most operatic of scenarios: The devotion of an ascetic monk who has dedicated his life to God is tested against the allure of the world’s most voluptuous\, seductive courtesan. And in this glorious\, rarely performed jewel\, Massenet milks the melodrama for all it’s worth\, clothing the story in music as glamorous and sensual as the seductive title character herself—portrayed in this 2008 Live in HD performance by the great Renée Fleming.

SUMMARY:Virtual Art Salon: Brianna Ashe and Kara Hoblin
DESCRIPTION:Join Guild Hall Curatorial Assistant\, Casey Dalene as she engages with one of our most valuable resources during this time (and at all times): Artists. What better profession to teach us how to be at home\, often times solitary\, alone with our thoughts\, finding ways to express ourselves\, and looking towards the future. While we cannot mingle at our usual gatherings; art openings\, gallery receptions\, artist talks\, studio visits etc.\, let’s continue these conversations virtually as we pose the questions: What does the pandemic art world look like from the artist’s perspective? How is this changing the creative practice? Are there ways artists are finding to help first responders and essential workers through their craft? How are artists continuing to find ways to make a living? What digital resources are out there? How can the general public help support them? What movements will manifest in the post-pandemic art world? Join us as we engage in conversation with artists during this historic time. \nVirtual Art Salon hosted by Casey Dalene\, Guild Hall Curatorial Assistant\, Registrar and Lewis B Cullman Associate for Museum Education \nFeaturing: \nKara Hoblin\, Artist  \nBrianna Ashe\, Artist \nIn the next Guild Hall Virtual Art Salon\, Casey Dalene\, Kara Hoblin and Brianna Ashe will lead a one-hour Arts Incubator for artists and creatives looking to increase their digital presence. Artists Kara Hoblin and Brianna Ashe have swiftly adapted to the times and expanded their presence online with screaming success.  \nKara Hoblin lives and works on the North Fork on Long Island and has increased her Instagram following 6x in the last month as well as launched a new website\, and Etsy and Patreon accounts. Brianna Ashe\, an Amagansett resident\, has also launched a new website with products ranging from drawings and prints to mugs and hats\, and as result of her exhibition in the Drive-By-Art show\, has attracted new collectors of her work.   \nLet’s tap into how they achieved this by discussing the logistics and effects of a website\, e-commerce\, social media\, and more; sharing tips and tools for both individual success and to assure the resurgence of the East End creative economy.   \nWhen artists succeed\, we all succeed.  \nFree with required registration.  Private Zoom link will be emailed to registrants 24 hours prior to the Salon. Please be sure to sign up for a free Zoom account ahead of time.

SUMMARY:AUSTIN PENDLETON stars in JAMES JOYCE: A SHORT NIGHT’S ODYSSEY FROM NO TO YES
DESCRIPTION:A one man play by Joe Beck \nDirected by Elizabeth Falk \nAttention all fans of great literature and superb acting – BLOOMSDAY APPROACHES! Come celebrate one of Ireland (and the world’s) finest writers\, James Joyce\, as read and performed by a legend of the American stage\, Austin Pendleton\, at a one-night-only virtual live reading presented by Guild Hall. Joyce’s most famous work Ulysses (1922) is based on Homer’s The Odyssey and follows the movements of Leopold Bloom through a single day on June 16th\, 1904. Bloomsday is celebrated every year in Dublin and around the world by fans of Joyce at events including readings\, performances\, visitations to locales from the book\, cosplay as characters from the novel and even eating the traditional Bloomsday breakfast of liver & kidneys served alongside an Irish fried breakfast. You don’t necessarily need to wear a straw boater or eat rashers and black pudding to enjoy this exclusive performance – a benefit for Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater which has been closed by the pandemic – but then again\, it’s a virtual presentation so what you do from the comfort of your home while listening to the amazing Pendleton interpret this literary masterpiece is entirely up to you. \nOf playwright Joe Beck’s sharp\, new adaptation Pendleton remarks\, “I feel that Joe has done the impossible: created a character for the theatre who could actually be James Joyce. This accomplishment in Joe’s writing astonished me. I would have thought it impossible. But here he is\, Mr. Joyce\, musing in free-from\, struggling in free-form\, about his writing\, about his dreams and his successful efforts to create a literature that represented life as he knew it\, in all it’s astounding complexity and wonder. Joe Beck finds the drama as well as the humor\, and the joy\, in Joyce’s struggle; and the sense of climbing a daunting mountain\, going higher and higher into some literary heaven that before him had been unknown to anyone. For all these reasons it is a thrill for me to read Joe’s play aloud.” \nThis is a remarkable opportunity to intimately experience the charisma and versatility of one of America’s theatrical living legends – Austin Pendleton – a foremost interpreter of all things Joycean as well as an Obie and Drama Desk Award-winning\, Tony-nominated director\, playwright and star of Broadway and innumerable film and television appearances in a stellar career that has spanned over five decades of performance. Pendleton is directed by his colleague Elizabeth Falk\, noted director of opera and theatre with a wide-ranging career that has carried her across America’s regional theaters to work in Russia\, Europe and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London where she has the distinction of being the first woman to direct a play for that stage. \nThis presentation is the second offering in Guild Hall’s new Virtual John Drew Theater series and follows the popular recent presentation of A PORTRAIT OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS staring Harris Yulin and Mercedes Ruehl. As with TENNESSEE\, this evening’s performance will be followed by a live Q&A with Mr. Pendleton and the play’s creative team\, moderated by the John Drew Theater’s Artistic Director Josh Gladstone. \nA link to the live broadcast will be emailed to ticket holders 24 hours in advance. If you purchase a ticket after that\, the link will be emailed automatically in your ticket receipt.

Experimenting with these techniques\, their work spans from self-portrait to reflected landscapes; expanding on the past years’ annual portrait series.  \nAn annual program\, Clarence Sheppard has been leading a digital photography project with Sag Harbor Elementary students for the past 17 years. The project is made possible in part by the Reutershan Educational Trust\, a privately funded art program created by Sag Harbor resident and architect Hobart “Hobbie” Betts.

SUMMARY:RE
DESCRIPTION:RESTART RENEW REFRESH REINVENT REUNITE \nAs Guild Hall begins the initial stages of reopening\, the Teen Arts Council (TAC) is investigating the idea of “reopen” and\, in general\, the prefix “re;” How will this phase\, and the pandemic that caused it\, alter how we interact with each other? In what ways is the world around us already reopening? How do we reopen to a more empathetic world\, rather than return to the status-quo?  \nWith these questions in mind each TAC Member has documented the “re” sights\, sounds\, and interactions they see on a daily basis\, culminating in a series of four vignettes projected on rear-facing windows of Guild Hall. \nRE is on view Friday – Monday evenings: June 26 – July 13. The work can be viewed from the parking lot at a self-regulated physical distancing (6 feet) from other patrons.  \nAll media recorded and collected by TAC Members\nVideo editing by TAC Member\, Anni Spacek\nProjection by Joe Brondo & Patrick Dawson\nCurated by Anthony Madonna  \nTeens Make Abstract Videos for Guild Hall by Christine Sampson in The East Hampton Star
