SUMMARY:Carly Haffner: In The Woods
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Guild Hall Education Corridor Exhibition\, Carly Haffner: In The Woods\, will be on view from November 14 – February 23\, with an Opening Reception on Thursday\, November 14 from 6-8pm\, open to all. The Guild Hall Education Corridor is a space adjacent to the Museum galleries that highlights emerging artists living and working on the East End of Long Island. Each year an artist is selected to transform the corridor space with their work and collaborate on programming with the Guild Hall Education Department.\n \nThis year\, painter and sculptor\, Carly Haffner has been chosen as The Guild Hall Education Corridor Artist. Haffner will be working closely with the Education Department and the Teen Arts Council to develop a set design element for the performances in the theater during the Student Art Festival Opening Reception\, January 25\, 2-4pm. She will also be hosting an evening of painting for adults and young adults\, Painting Trees with Carly Haffner\, February 20\, 6-9pm.\n \nThe corridor exhibit\, Carly Haffner: In the Woods\, is a selection of Haffner’s landscape paintings. Depicting the woods in her folk-art-inspired style with minimal lines and subtle color shifts\, the viewer is guided through the landscape paying homage to another side of the ‘Hamptons.’ Turning the focus away from the sprawling beaches and farm fields to the residential landscapes of the year-round community: homes in the woods\, yards with old cars\, fishing gear\, a vintage airstream\, etc. Haffner chooses a narrative that carries much more weight for her and her community.\n \nHaffner moved to Springs\, East Hampton 36 years ago\, and she is the only one of her family that still resides on the East End. A principal painting by Haffner\, is one in which she depicts her family home on fire\, metaphorically burning down what once was. Drawing attention to an experience that is far too familiar\, she touches on the struggle of the local community in the Hamptons. As the region grows in popularity and the cost of living increases\, it becomes harder to sustain a comfortable life and Haffner’s view point suggests a concern\, particularly for the future of the artist community\, which has a deep historic legacy in the area.\n \nIn 2005\, Haffner was one of five founding members of the Bonac Tonic art collective. A savvy way for artists to support one another\, she and her colleagues were able to split the responsibilities and costs\, exhibiting regularly at Ashawagh Hall in Springs East Hampton and the Markel Fine Art Gallery in Bridgehampton.\n \nHaffner has a BFA from the California College of the Arts and an MFA from Hunter College\, New York City and has exhibited at the Silas Marder Gallery\, Bridgehampton and Ashawagh Hall\, East Hampton.

SUMMARY:HamptonsFilm presents NOW SHOWING: Pain and Glory
DESCRIPTION:https://www.guildhall.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/y2mate.com-pain_and_glory_official_trailer_hd_2019_pEjFOkCKb3g_1080p.mp4\nDirected by Pedro Almodóvar\n(Spain\, 2019\, 113 minutes) \nPAIN AND GLORY tells of a series of re-encounters experienced by Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas)\, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh\, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s\, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity\, the first desire\, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s\, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense\, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable\, the early discovery of cinema\, and the void\, the infinite void created by the incapacity to keep on making films. PAIN AND GLORY talks about creation\, about the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past\, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it\, and in that need he also finds his salvation. \nStarring Antonio Banderas\, Penelope Cruz\, Asier Etxeandia\, Leonardo Sbaraglia\, César Vicente\, and Asier Flores. \n• Shortlisted as Spain’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film Oscar® \nNOW SHOWING brings acclaimed first-run art house\, independent\, and world cinema films currently in theaters to the East End.

SUMMARY:HamptonsFilm presents NOW SHOWING: The Mission\, hosted by Alec Baldwin
DESCRIPTION:https://www.guildhall.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/The-Mission-Trailer.mp4\nJoin us for this special screening of this Palme d’Or winner and 7-time Oscar® nominee (winner for Best Cinematography for Chris Menges). \nHamptonsFilm Co-Chair Alec Baldwin will be in conversation following this special screening. \nIn director Roland Joffe’s historical epic The Mission\, Jeremy Irons stars as Gabriel\, an 18th-century Jesuit priest sent to the jungles of Brazil to build a Guarani Indian mission. Upon his arrival\, Gabriel meets the slave trader Mendoza (Robert De Niro)\, a cruel\, bloodless man who kills as many of the Guaranis as he enslaves. His brother Felipe (Aidan Quinn) is another of his victims\, killed in a duel over a woman. Because of Mendoza’s aristocratic background\, he cannot be tried for his crimes; however\, the weight of his conscience inspires him to ask Gabriel for the opportunity to do penance at the mission. When Spain sells Brazil to Portugal\, the two very different men must join together to defend the mission against aggressors. –RottenTomatoes \nHamptonsFilm is pleased to continue to curate the hit screening series NOW SHOWING\, featuring acclaimed first-run\, art house\, independent\, and world cinema.

SUMMARY:Game Night: Letter Jam
DESCRIPTION:This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Letter Jam\, the cooperative word game. Letter Jam is a game of deduction and teamwork. Each player has a secret word\, unknown to themselves\, with one letter revealed at a time. Players go around spelling words with each other’s letters\, essentially giving clues to each other about their secret letter. Over time\, your secret word will reveal itself to you through the clues you have been given by your teammates. Letter Jam is a great new word game that challenges players in a unique way to work together to solve the puzzle.  \nIn the past couple decades\, game designers have been creating fascinating\, immersive table-top games that make Monopoly seem like it was designed in 1905. Game night no longer means suffering through hours of rolling dice in Monopoly or Risk. Today’s newest non-digital board and card games cultivate creativity\, problem solving\, social skills\, and dexterity through clever game design. Join Guild Hall and Game Master Noah Salaway in embracing the tabletop revolution as we play some of the best modern board games on the market the fourth Monday of each month.  \nTake a break from the digital age and join us at the table! Ages 16 and up only.

SUMMARY:HamptonsFilm presents NOW SHOWING: Young Ahmed
DESCRIPTION:https://www.guildhall.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/YoungAhmedOfficialTrailer.mp4\nDirected by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne \n(Belgium\, 2019\, 84 minutes) \nThe Dardenne Brothers won this year’s Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for this brave new work\, another intimate portrayal-in-furious-motion of a protagonist in crisis. The filmmakers’ radical empathy alights on a Muslim teenager (extraordinary first-time actor Idir Ben Addi) in a small Belgian town who has been radicalized by his Imam despite the desperate protestations of his single mother (Claire Bodson)\, and who winds up hatching a murderous plot targeting his beloved teacher (Myriem Akheddiou). Taking a serious view of a difficult issue—the effect of fanaticism on the body and soul—the Dardennes here remind viewers why they continue to be at the center of 21st-century cinema. –New York Film Festival \nNOW SHOWING brings acclaimed first-run art house\, independent\, and world cinema films currently in theaters to the East End.
