SUMMARY:ugo rondinone: sunny days
DESCRIPTION:All Galleries\nChristina Mossaides Strassfield\, Curator \nPrivate Member Reception – August 10\, 2019\nConversation with Ugo Rondinone and Bob Nickas – August 10\, 2019 \nGuild Hall is delighted to be presenting works by the renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone in the exhibition\, sunny days\, featuring sun-themed sculpture and paintings\, as well as a collaboration with area school children. The exhibition\, which explores the sun as a motif and metaphor\, is divided into three parts: paintings\, sculptures\, and a community art project. \nIn a new series of eight “sun paintings\,” Rondinone references the radiance and universal symbolism of the sun. He has incorporated this imagery in his work since 1991\, and uses canvas spray-painted with soft concentric yellow rings as a representation of the sun and the impossibility of seeing its form with the naked eye. These eight paintings will be installed in Guild Hall’s Woodhouse Gallery. \nA selection of large sun sculptures will be placed at alternating angles in Guild Hall’s Moran Gallery. These large-scale circular rings are made from vine branches which were cast in aluminum and then gilded. The artist chose to depict the vine as a symbol of renewal because of its life cycle from growth to dormancy and rebirth to a fruitful state every year—reminiscent of the solar cycle. \nFollowing similar projects that Rondinone has carried out in Rotterdam\, Shanghai\, Rome\, Berkeley\, Cincinnati and Moscow\, the artist has invited children from the East End to help him create a gallery of sun drawings. Students from local schools\, daycare centers and afterschool programs will participate and create depictions of the sun to be displayed salon style in the Spiga Gallery. \nRondinone\, who has a home on the North Fork\, is a New York-based\, Swiss-born mixed-media artist who has spent the last 25 years working in a diverse range of mediums\, including painting\, drawing\, photography\, video\, installation\, and sculpture. Whether trance-inducing mandala paintings\, large-scale drawings from nature\, moody multi-channel video environments\, painted stone sculptures\, or full-scale clown figures\, Rondinone moves fluidly between figuration and abstraction. Rondinone often incorporates the theme of time and space in his work and explores the emotional and psychic understanding found in the most basic elements of everyday life; in this exhibition it is the Sun and its radiance. \nUgo Rondinone has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at institutions\, including Bass Museum of Art\, Miami; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive\, Berkeley; Contemporary Arts Center\, Cincinnati; Garage Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow; Place Vendôme\, Paris; MACRO and Mercati di Traiano\, Rome; The Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen\, Rotterdam; Museum Anahuacalli\, Mexico City; Rockbund Art Museum\, Shanghai; Museum of Cycladic Art\, Athens; Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien\, Vienna; and Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens\, Deurle\, Belgium. In 2016\, Rondinone’s large-scale public work seven magic mountains opened outside Las Vegas\, co-produced by the Art Production Fund and Nevada Museum of Art. In 2017\, Rondinone curated a city-wide exhibition\, Ugo Rondinone: I ♥ John Giorno\, which honored the artist’s life partner in thirteen venues throughout Manhattan.

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival presents NOW SHOWING: Monos
DESCRIPTION:https://www.guildhall.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/MONOS_TrailerH264.mp4\nNow Showing brings acclaimed first-run art house\, independent\, and world cinema films currently in theaters to the East End. \nMonos\, Alejandro Landes’ awe-inspiring third feature\, is a breathtaking survivalist saga set on a remote mountain in Latin America. The film tracks a young group of soldiers and rebels — bearing names like Rambo\, Smurf\, Bigfoot\, Wolf and Boom-Boom — who keep watch over an American hostage\, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). \nThe teenage commandos perform military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night\, an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force known only as The Organization. After an ambush drives the squadron into the jungle\, both the mission and the intricate bonds between the group begin to disintegrate. Order descends into chaos and within MONOS the strong begin to prey on the weak in this vivid\, cautionary fever- dream. \nWith a rapturous score by Mica Levi (only her third\, after UNDER THE SKIN and JACKIE)\, director Alejandro Landes examines the chaos and absurdity of war from the unique perspective of adolescence\, recalling LORD OF THE FLIES and BEAU TRAVAIL in a way that feels wholly original. Landes brings together a diverse young cast of both seasoned professionals (including Hannah Montana’s Moisés Arias) and untrained neophytes and thrusts them into an unforgiving\, irrational and often surreal environment where anything can happen — even peace.

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival presents CLEMENCY
DESCRIPTION:2019 Spotlight | feature narrative | 113 min \n2019 | English | USA \nIn the wake of a botched execution under her watch\, prison warden Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard) finds herself questioning her position\, her home life\, and the ethical consequences of the work she oversees. The arrival of the newest death row inmate\, Anthony Woods (Aldis Hodge\, HIFF 2019 Breakthrough Artist)\, along with the lawyer\, relatives\, and protestors fighting for his release\, further complicates the increasingly undeniable truth—that under her professional\, strong-willed demeanor\, she is quickly approaching a breaking point. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival\, writer-director Chinonye Chukwu’s CLEMENCY is a thought-provoking look at the psychological effects of capital punishment\, anchored by Woodard’s career-best performance at its center.

SUMMARY:Hamptons International Film Festival presents A CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN DE PALMA
DESCRIPTION:HIFF 2019 will honor legendary director Brian De Palma with a Lifetime Achievement Award\, along with a special screening of his iconic film BLOW OUT (1981) on October 12. \nEqually regarded as a leading member of the New Hollywood movement\, the Master of the Macabre\, and the heir-apparent to Hitchcock’s legacy as an unparalleled auteur of suspense filmmaking\, Brian De Palma has held a singular role in American filmmaking for almost a half-century. After getting his start in the late sixties with a series of irreverent New Wave-esque satires\, De Palma gained his first mainstream recognition with a run of landmark cult favorite thrillers throughout the seventies (including SISTERS and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE)\, culminating in the release of his first major mainstream success: 1976’s CARRIE. \nCapitalizing on that film’s box-office momentum\, De Palma quickly proved himself to be a master technician of genre filmmaking imbued with a trademark audacity\, mixing huge outbursts of violence with a keenly aware sense of humor and provocation. Whether working within the world of SCARFACE’s 80s cocaine-fueled hysteria\, BLOW OUT’s uneasy conspiracy thriller\, THE UNTOUCHABLES’ prohibition-set gangster epic\, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE’s brash throwback escapism\, or CASUALTIES OF WAR’s stark examination of war crimes at the hands of American soldiers in Vietnam\, the director created a slew of classics that still stand as watershed moments of their respective genres. Now entering his sixth decade in filmmaking\, De Palma has continued to build on a body of work as much defined by its mastery of craft as by its restlessness\, never content to settle on what’s come before and always keen to push himself\, and his audience\, out of their comfort zone. \n\nThe A Conversation With… series is a HIFF tradition\, presenting one-on-one interviews with legendary personalities. Past conversations include Steven Spielberg\, Vanessa Redgrave\, Robert Altman\, Susan Sarandon\, Richard Gere\, Michael Moore\, Edward Norton\, Holly Hunter\, Emily Blunt\, Martin Scorsese\, Annette Bening\, Rob Reiner\, and many more.

SUMMARY:PLAYWRITING: Process & Projects with Bill Burford
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, October 16–November 20 from 6–9pm \nPLAYWRITING: PROCESS & PROJECTS is a six-week workshop designed to unleash the playwright’s inner imaginings\, explore how stories emerge\, and prepare for production. Producer/director Bill Burford helps writers\, actors\, and other artists foster each other’s work through free-drafting\, reading each participant’s new pages together\, and mutually supportive feedback. \nArtists are encouraged to work on any kind of character-based piece for stage: plays\, operas\, and new forms\, as well as dance\, musical\, puppet\, or physical theater. With the performative medium left to the writer\, each workshop’s focus develops with the scripts themselves\, addressing a variety of concepts\, processes\, and techniques as needed. \nThe workshop concludes with a reflection on the preceding weeks’ work\, and a final reading where the writers can hear excerpts from their latest re-write with an invited audience.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live: Small Island
DESCRIPTION:Small Island \nadapted by Helen Edmundson \nbased on the novel by Andrea Levy \nAndrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel Small Island comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation. Experience the play in cinemas\, filmed live on stage as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday. \nSmall Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain\, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury\, England.  \nThe play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica\, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer\, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK. \nA company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in London in this timely and moving story.

SUMMARY:Operatif: Exploring Puccini’s Operatic Style
DESCRIPTION:Puccini’s Turandot is a classic example of the height of the Italian romantic style – through-composed opera with lush orchestral textures\, demanding larger voices to declaim highly emotional themes.  Most of Puccini’s operas are truly verismo operas in their conception\, like La bohème and Tosca\, recounting in ‘real time’ tales of love and sometimes violence rather than the mythological and real kings and queens or counts and countesses of the earlier operas. Turandot breaks the mold and is based on a Persian myth which Puccini sets in China. Here Puccini fits the ancient tale of the Princess Turandot in the operatic sound-world that he helped propel. Join pianist Derrick Goff and tenor Cameron Schutza as we explore how to listen to this changing operatic style.  \nPlease join us for the Season Opener Breakfast Reception at 11:30am in the Wasserstein Gallery prior to the lecture-recital at 12pm.

SUMMARY:JDT Lab: Kingdom of the Spirits by JZ Holden
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Amanda Kate Joshi \nKINGDOM OF THE SPIRITS is about a Jewish nightclub owner in Berlin between 1938 and 1945. Her longtime lover Heinz\, who is now a powerful Nazi General\, comes to her club one evening in 1938 to tell her that she must leave Berlin\, that he can no longer protect her\, but that he has created a plan for her escape and survival. \nShe agrees to go along with it only if he will promise to protect her family and guarantee that no harm will come to them. He agrees\, and a deal with the devil is struck. The political climate of war and its psychological landscape is the place where Kingdom of the Spirits takes place\, misinformation is rife\, collaboration and collusion are temptations too difficult to dismiss and death is one poor decision away. \nKingdom of the Spirits is a story about the price we pay for forbidden love\, betrayal\, political complicity\, and ultimately survival.

SUMMARY:Joyce Kubat: My People
DESCRIPTION:Spiga Gallery \n\nMembers Reception October 27\, 2-4pm\nGallery Talk:  Saturday\, November 16\, 2pm \nJoyce Kubat is the Top Honors recipient of the 79th Artist Members Exhibition (2017). Kubat was selected by guest awards juror\, Ruba Katrib\, who was curator at the Sculpture Center and now curator at MoMA PS1. \nIn this exhibition Kubat assembles her people\, a body of work which she has been developing since 2002. Her media has remained the same and Kubat lets the process lead the way in her deeply psychological figurative works. From pastels applied to damp paper creating a liquid soft skin with deep velvet pigments\, to fluid pink inks that have the extraordinary transparency of flesh\, these materials have led her to convey an emotionally raw narrative of human anatomy. \nThe figure has always been my focus\, and over the years it’s become a psychological focus\, a not-always-easy-to-view focus… Art with only surface excitement seems empty. For me it has to have a serious and profound underpinning\, always poignant\, often humorous\, relating in some way to the universal humanity common to all of us. – Joyce Kubat \nKubat holds a BS in Psychology from Michigan State University and continued her studies in New York City at both Brooklyn College and Art Students League of New York. She lives and works in Huntington\, NY and has exhibited throughout Long Island\, New York City\, Italy\, and elsewhere. \nCurator: Casey Dalene \n \n

SUMMARY:Abstract Expressionism Revisited: Selections from the Guild Hall Museum Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Guest Curator: Joan Marter\, PhD\nOctober 26- December 30\, 2019\,  Moran and Woodhouse Galleries\nReception: October 27\, 2-4pm\nGallery Talk: October 27\, 1-2pm \nThis exhibition of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculpture will celebrate the outstanding collection of Abstract Expressionist art owned by Guild Hall. Abstract Expressionism was an avant-garde movement of the 1950s that resulted\, in part\, from the dynamic interplay of artists working on the East End. Among the participants in this “artist colony” of the Hamptons were permanent residents and summer visitors.  Painters included Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner\, Willem and Elaine de Kooning\, James Brooks and Charlotte Park\, Robert Motherwell\, and Grace Hartigan among others.  Presentation of many works that have not been exhibited in recent years\, also brings attention to the digitization of the Guild Hall collection that was completed recently. The Museum has been building a significant collection of Abstract Expressionist works\, and prime examples will be combined with loans by artists who created their work on the East End. \nThe exhibition will include a catalogue with color illustrations of examples in the Guild Hall collection\, and an essay that explains the importance of East End artists to the emergence of Abstract Expressionism . \nJoan Marter is an American academic\, art critic and author with a Ph.D. from The University of Delaware\, 1974. Marter is the “Distinguished Professor of Art History” at Rutgers University\, the co-editor of the Woman’s Art Journal\, the editor of The Grove Encyclopedia of American Art\, the author and co-organizer of Women of Abstract Expressionism in 2016 (Denver Art Museum).  \nExhibition Catalogue

SUMMARY:Guild Hall Game Night: Mental Blocks
DESCRIPTION:This month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Mental Blocks.  \nMental Blocks is cooperative puzzle solving game where players work together to build a common structure out of foam blocks. For every puzzle\, each player receives a card depicting one perspective of the finished structure. Players must work together using their limited information to solve the puzzle before the timer runs out. After a couple rounds\, we will try the “hidden traitor variant\,” where a player who knows the puzzle’s solution is actively trying to sabotage the team without being found out. Mental Blocks is an incredibly simple concept that has everyone playing with blocks\, stretching their minds\, and working together. \nOut with the old\, in with the new! \nIn the past couple decades\, game designers have been creating fascinating\, immersive table-top games that make Monopoly seem like it was designed in 1905. Game night no longer means suffering through hours of rolling dice in Monopoly or Risk. Today’s newest non-digital board and card games cultivate creativity\, problem solving\, social skills\, and dexterity through clever game design. Join Guild Hall and Game Master Noah Salaway in embracing the tabletop revolution as we play some of the best modern board games on the market the last Monday of each month. Take a break from the digital age and join us at the table! Ages 16 and up only.
