SUMMARY:Aubrey Roemer: Blue it!
DESCRIPTION:Roemer’s mural project Blue It! draws attention to the health of the intricate waterways surrounding the East End. This three-part project began with a public beach clean-up in partnership with The Surfrider Foundation\, which took place at Main Beach in East Hampton on October 20 from 11am-1pm. Materials collected on the beach will be used to expose silhouette imagery onto recycled fabric in the rich blue cyanotype process. The printed fabric created at the beach will contribute to a larger collection of cyanotypes created by Roemer and used in a 30-foot mural in the Guild Hall Education Corridor. Altogether\, these blue images will amass themselves like the sea\, which upon closer examination\, will reveal the human-created waste that pollutes it. \n*Beach Clean-Up in partnership with The Surfrider Foundation \n*Additional support and fabric donations from the East Hampton Ladies Village Improvement Society. \nCurated by Casey Dalene\, Registrar/Curatorial Assistant/Lewis B. Cullman Associate for Museum Education

SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD - Bizet's Carmen
DESCRIPTION:1 p.m. ET / Approx. runtime: 3:41 [1 Intermission] \nLouis Langrée; Aleksandra Kurzak (Micaëla)\, Clémentine Margaine (Carmen)\, Roberto Alagna (Don José)\, Alexander Vinogradov (Escamillo) \nMezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine reprises her remarkable portrayal of opera’s ultimate seductress\, a triumph in her 2017 debut performances\, with impassioned tenors Yonghoon Lee and Roberto Alagna as her lover\, Don José. Omer Meir Wellber and Louis Langrée share conducting duties for Sir Richard Eyre’s powerful production\, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere. \nGeorges Bizet (1838–1875) was known as a brilliant student and prodigy\, but his works only found lasting success after his untimely death—most notably Carmen\, which premiered three months before he died. Librettist Henri Meilhac (1831–1897) would subsequently provide the libretto for Massenet’s Manon (1884). His collaborator on Carmen was Ludovic Halévy (1834–1908)\, the nephew of composer Jacques Fromental Halévy (creator of the opera La Juive and Bizet’s father-in-law). The libretto is based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée (1803–1870)\, a French dramatist\, historian\, and archaeologist. \nThe opera takes place in and around Seville\, a city that\, by the time Carmen was written\, had already served many operatic composers as an exotic setting conducive to erotic intrigues and turmoil (Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Verdi’s La Forza del Destino\, among others). The hometown of Don Juan\, the city also inspired Mozart with Don Giovanni\, and Beethoven used Seville as the setting for a study of marital fidelity in Fidelio.

SUMMARY:Vivian's Music\, 1969 A new play by Monica Bauer
DESCRIPTION:“Vivian’s Music is a stunning piece of work…Like the title character\, it’s funny and smart and so\, so heartbreaking.” – WomanAboutTown.com \n“Vivian’s Music\, 1969 is outstanding… The script is superb… both actors capture the characters perfectly… You absolutely must catch this.” – chrisontheatre.wordpress.com \n“It’s a dynamic show that is beautifully written\, directed\, designed and performed. This show could be performed anywhere\, with only candles or the light from an open fire and still completely move you to tears with its truth.”  – StageBiz.com \nInspired by these real events: in 1969\, in a segregated city in the American Midwest bursting with racial tension\, a 14 year old black girl named Vivian was shot by a white cop\, igniting one of the worst race riots in American history. No one knew anything about her\, just her name\, her age\, and how she died. This fantasia for two actors gives Vivian a life\, a family\, a love of music\, and a reason to live; the jazz legend who’s back in the neighborhood might be her real father. Can they find each other\, before the city explodes? \nActors: Kailah King and Russell Jordan\nDirected by Glory Kadigan\nPlaywright Monica Bauer

SUMMARY:HIFF Now Showing Classic Screening The Shining
DESCRIPTION:Stanley Kubrick‘s screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining has been called many things. An old-fashioned haunted house movie. A depiction of domestic abuse. The ultimate take on writer’s block. Indiewire recently went so far as to call it the greatest horror film of all time. Ultimately\, The Shining is a Kubrick film\, which means that some of the most penetrating and complex cinematography\, compelling production design and deft editing combine with Jack Nicholson’s outrageous performance to create scenes that have bled into the fabric of pop culture and will haunt you\, forever.  \nQ+A with series co-hosts Alec Baldwin and HIFF Artistic Director\, David Nugent.  \nImage credit Warner Brothers

SUMMARY:Great Art on Screen: VAN GOGH: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies
DESCRIPTION:Take a fresh look at Van Gogh through the legacy of the greatest private collector of the Dutch artist’s work: Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939)\, one of the first to recognize the genius of Van Gogh. In the early 20th century\, Kröller-Müller amassed nearly 300 of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings now housed at her namesake museum in Holland. The Basilica Palladina exhibition in Vicenza\, “Amid Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies\,” with 40 paintings and 85 drawings on loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum\, lends the basis of this program\, revealing Van Gogh’s art and his genius\, while allowing audiences to understand the importance of drawing as part of his craft. Van Gogh’s seemingly instinctive canvases were the result of long\, preparatory studies very rarely exhibited – not just sketches but stunning works of art in and of themselves\, where the broken flow of lines that characterize the style and strokes in Van Gogh’s paintings can already be seen.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live Screening: The Tragedy of King Richard II
DESCRIPTION:Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II\, broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London to cinemas.  \nThis visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins\, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre. \nRichard II\, King of England\, is irresponsible\, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power\, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.\nSimon Russell Beale returns to National Theatre Live screens following broadcasts of Timon of Athens and King Lear\, and his recent role in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy.

SUMMARY:JDT Lab: Waiting for Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Two college freshmen\, stuck living life through social media in this day and age\, struggle in a changing society – dealing with their own inner demons while seeking love. The two students meet and unexpectedly build a remarkable bond that later leads to a challenging moment in their lives – fearing the feeling of love and causing them to mask their true identities. However\, in time\, someone’s healing and joy becomes someone else’s inner pain\, revealing truths for better and worse. \nIn February 2014\, Guild Hall debuted the John Drew Theater Lab (JDTLab)\, a workshop devoted to fostering East End performing artists and cultivating audiences for their work. The mission of JDTLab is to support actively-engaged performing artists by providing the helpful resources of the John Drew Theater to further them along on the journey of their creative process. Participants in the JDTLab receive access to the theater and its rehearsal rooms as well as the support of Guild Hall’s administrative and production staff to present a one-night showcase of their work. Artists selected for the series will also receive a modest honorarium and a travel stipend to help bring in out-of-town collaborators.

SUMMARY:Guild Hall Game Night
DESCRIPTION:Out with the old\, in with the new! \nIn the past couple decades\, game designers have been creating fascinating\, immersive games that make Monopoly seem like it was designed in 1905. Game night no longer means suffering through hours of rolling dice in Monopoly or Risk. Today’s games cultivate creativity\, problem solving\, social skills\, and dexterity through clever game design. Join Guild Hall and Game Master Noah Salaway in embracing the tabletop revolution as we play some of the best modern games on the market the last Monday of each month. Ages 16 and up only.  \nThis month at Guild Hall Game Night we will be playing Trapwords\, from Czech Games Edition. Trapwords is a great new team word-guessing game with a twist. Each round\, one player on each team will try to get teammates to guess a secret word by saying anything they want. However\, the opposing team has created a list of words the cluegiver is not allowed to say – and the cluegiver has no idea what they are. This creates a hilarious dynamic where no one is sure what they are allowed to say\, and descriptions of ordinary words become totally bizarre. I once got my team to guess “roof” by saying “the thing that gets burned when you eat pizza” because I was afraid words related to houses might be on my opponent’s list. This is a simple game to play but hilarious and tricky to win.
