JOHN DREW THEATER HISTORY
Guild Hall is said to be the first center in America to combine a theater, museum and community meeting place under one roof, setting an example for all the regional theaters to follow. The John Drew Playhouse opened its doors in 1931 and was named after the famed, dashing matinee idol John Drew, who ironically never set foot on our stage. Its octagonal shape, blue and white striped tent-like ceiling which swept up to a chandelier of multicolored glass balloons, its diamond patterned walls, rose-pink seats and six elegant little boxes at the rear.

At the opening of the Theater, Drew’s life long friend, Otis Skinner, spoke glowingly of him; telling stories about “Uncle Jack”. Also at the opening ceremonies a young John Drew Devereaux, the actors 10 year old Grandson, accepted the dedication gracefully: “I wish to thank you, Mr. Skinner, for the beautiful tribute to my grandfather and the gracious ladies and gentlemen of East Hampton who made this beautiful memorial possible.”

RENOVATION
For the first time since its origional construction in 1931, The John Drew Theater, lobby, Gift Shop, mezzanine and dressing rooms will all boast a floor-to-ceiling revitalization. In addition to restoring its circus tent ceiling and chandelier of colored glass balloons to their former glory, the renovation will include new seating, special finishes, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting as well as new mechanical systems and rigging.

The prosecenium stage will be rebuilt with new below-stage dressing rooms and bathrooms. The renovation is being designed and managed by the premiere architectural firm of Robert A. M. Stern Architects. Notwithstanding the 18 month renovation, the show will go on. East Hampton Studios is the NEW Summer home of the John Drew Theater. Guild Hall's Museum and The Boots Lamb Education Center will remain OPEN!
