Six Years Using Art as a Medium for Learning

For six years, Guild Hall has produced ARTLINK, a two-part academic outreach program that integrates the visual and performing arts with the elementary school curriculum to inspire imagination and observation skills. The program is coordinated by Michelle Klein, Assistant Curator and Registrar Associate for Museum Education, and is conducted in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy.

In early May, Paul D’Andrea, Land Manager for The Nature Conservancy, guided 30 second-graders from The Montauk School on a tour of Andy Warhol Visual Arts Preserve. Each student used a camera to capture the abundant wildlife, natural growth, and beach landscape. They were joined by poet Megan Chaskey, who conducted a poetry workshop that encouraged the children to share their observations through written and spoken words.

The second part of the program occurred in the classroom. Ms. Klein developed the film and the children selected an image to be printed out on watercolor paper provided by the Montauk School District. The students then transcribed their poems onto the paper and painted in the photograph using watercolors. Their final work will be exhibited at Guild Hall during the 2014 Student Arts Festival.

Chicago, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sly and the Family Stone, Simon and Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Santana, Thelonious Monk – these are just a fraction of the recording artist giants that John Berg worked with as Art Director of Columbia Records from 1961 to 1985. Berg designed over 5,000 record covers over the course of his career, won four Grammy Awards and was nominated for 29. With the cover designs, he worked to tell a story about the artist and the music within. Visitors to the exhibition are immediately flooded with memories of their own stories that connect them to the music and the art of these iconic albums.
